Good explanation of net neutrality and why it affects you.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Instead of going out on Friday nights I'm going to set aside that money every week to build my own internet. Let's all pool some money together and launch a satellite into space and make this happen.

It'll be called HipsterNet(TM). The US Postal service will serve as our backbone and it'll be totally free, distributed, and will use the TCP protocol for content delivery. The beautiful thing about HipsterNet(TM) is that it's completely non-digital so no one can control the free flow of information. There will be no throttling of information. All content will be created equal.

Here's how it works:

Person A wants to view a webpage, so they mail a letter to person B, who hosts web pages in a filing cabinet in his warehouse.
Person B sends replies back to A acknowledging they've received a request letter from person A for a webpage.
Person A receives the letter from Person B, and mails a response to B acknowledging they are ready for content delivery letter or package.
Person B digs through a filing cabinet of web pages that have been printed out, photocopies it, and mails a copy to person A.

American internet for the 21st century is here folks.

Mr. B, you down?
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.

Some news sources seem to think that the decision on net neutrality was made yesterday. It wasn't. Yesterday's FCC ruling open the doors to the public comment period concerning what the FCC should do about net neutrality.

Not to be paranoid... but I'm sure that's what they want people to think.

Also:
Bring back carrier tones like we had with dial-up.
Perhaps when you open a browser window.
I miss those.

No, I'm all for it. This article gives a good overview of the difference between the US and Canada on net neutrality.

I'm very happy that the TCP/IP-based internet won out over the X.25-based internet. That's the OTHER collection of interconnected networks that I used to use for email and browsing on CompuServe, booking airline tickets on Sabre, remotely logging into customer's Unix systems with DataPac, and ordering parts on IBM's Advantis and GE networks. It would have you still paying by the amount of data you transferred.

I just want my carrier tones back.

:(

This should be a good test of who speaks louder - public opinion or corporate dollars. http://www.technewsworld.com/story/8098 ... picks=true

I'll bet on the public - yeah right.

End net neutrality, end the red tape blocking "innovation": http://jointhefastlane.com/

Yeah... I added the code last Sunday, and it had issues, I never had a chance to figure out what the problem was. :shifty:

I thought about sneaking some code in for this on the product I work on, but then I realized I need a job to buy food and stuff so I better not.

Who is the new site host? ;)
Well, in a way we participated because the code took down the site for about an hour on Sunday before I noticed. We were just earlier than the rest of the internet.
:P

It won't be noticeable if you have dial up AOL.

My mom's boyfriend still uses AOL even though he has high-speed internet. Hey pays 30 bucks a month just for AOL on top of what he pays for high speed internet. Through some investigations last time I visited, I discovered the reason for this is he has years (probably at least a decade actually) worth of porno stored in his email inbox. Yep that's the only reason he keeps it. So he essentially pays 30 bucks a month for free internet porno.

I stopped right there and just let it be and backed away.
