Can't make this (stuff) up

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Yeah, that was a close call. I generally have no doubt about whether a spider is dead after I stomp it. I have another clever thing to do if you want to shock the neighbors......have a good leather belt ready and when you see people walking by your place, start beating the shit out of a chair or anything else that results in a nice whack sound when hit and on each blow you deliver, scream out in faux pain as if someone's being seriously whipped. This activity works good for me to settle my nerves and provide some comedy on a slow day.

I saw a story today about a new Vietnamese restaurant that's opening in Keene, NH but the city council is making them change their name.....the restaurant was going to be "Pho Keene Great" but the authorities think the name sounds like something else.

New Hampshire City Deems Pho Restaurant's Punny Name 'Offensive'
The city of Keene is displaying a disappointing lack of sense of humor in its opposition to what is objectively a solid pun.

... city manager Elizabeth Dragon (you can't make this Pho Keene stuff up) said that she hopes to meet with Jolie to discuss the next steps in this Pho Keene process....

In the meantime, Jolie is selling Pho Keene Great t-shirts online, and has taken an informal Facebook poll to determine whether or not the name really is inappropriate. “We had 3,400 votes that our business name is NOT OFFENSIVE and 117 votes for YES OFFENSIVE,” she wrote on Monday.

They might have stood a better chance if they hadn't moved in next door to city hall; I'll have to order one of those Pho Keene shirts in any case.
I wonder how they would answer the phone...."hello, this if Pho Keene Great" or if they built a wall around it, it would be the Pho Keene Great wall. And if they got a review from a culinary critic, his article would have to start out by saying "without any doubt, this place is Pho Keene Great." They could also have some clever ads in the local media emphasizing that they have a "Pho Keene Great bar" on site and can also provide private party service utilizing their own Pho Keene Great catering service. I predict Keene, NH is about to experience an influx of Pho Keene Great tourism and Pho Keene Great publicity.

A different Pho Keene article makes it more Pho Keene clear that the Pho Keene city owns the Pho Keene building, which is a Pho Keene irony.

If it hasn't already happened I predict that the road signs will soon read, 'Welcome to Pho Keene New Hampshire". City Hall will be trickier, but not out of the question.

I don't care on this particular case, but in general I wouldn't support restricting a trademark or business name/logo just because some people might choose to pronounce it in a way that could be similar to a vulgarity/obscenity, even thought it's not the same word. Maybe the clothing line was originally supposed to be "Eff U Cee Tee" - it wouldn't be the first company to just use letters that don't (or no longer) mean anything.

And if we're not allowing words that could have obscene meanings, we'd surely have to ban "Badcock Furniture" "Johnson Controls" (and really anybody named "Dick" or "Johnson.")

I've no doubt the Keene restauranteurs intended the pun, but when you take away the part in your imagination, all you have is the legitimate and commonly used name of a food, and a name of the town where the restaurant is.

And while we're at it, better re-name that hairy little Shih Tzu.

Remember that mysterious 'attack' on US diplomats in Cuba? Scientists think it was crickets

Beginning in late 2016, a mysterious illness befell U.S. diplomatic personnel and family members in Havana.

Specialists said the symptoms, described by those afflicted as “buzzing, grinding metal, piercing squeals and humming,” were similar to the brain dysfunction caused by concussions.

The U.S. government personnel in Cuba reported hearing these weird, loud sounds along with feelings of changes in air pressure in homes owned and maintained by the Cuban government and hotel rooms. Although there had been no history of head trauma, the symptoms reported were consistent with brain injury.

Some U.S. officials suspected the “health attacks” were intentional, perhaps perpetrated by the Cuban or Russian governments. But new research has implicated another culprit in the noise: Very loud crickets....

In response to the incidents in Cuba, the (POSPOTUS/Tillerson) State Department expelled 15 Cuban diplomats from the Washington embassy and initially reduced the number of workers in Havana. These sharp reductions would later be made permanent due to health concerns. The State Department officials have told Congress that 26 embassy workers in Cuba were affected by the mysterious health incidents since it was first discovered in December 2016.

A team of specialists from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Brain Injury and Repair couldn’t determine the cause of the mysterious illness but found that the Havana patients “experienced persisting disability of a significant nature.”

The Cuban government insisted that it played no role in the attacks and worked with U.S. investigators to determine the cause of the ailments.
Idk if it was crickets, but it NEVER made sense that the Cuban govt. did it. If it wanted US staff to leave, it could have ALWAYS just told them to leave. Instead, it wanted a continued thaw in relations.

Otoh, those who opposed a US thaw in relations with Cuba - Russians, rightwing Cubans or rightwing Americans - did have motive.

Comments:
So the embassy was bugged.
I hear that sound after I tell a joke.

Yeah, but radio ain't been around for very long.

I don't think I ever heard about this before tonight: The signed legislation creating the Secret Service was on Abraham Lincoln's desk the night he was assassinated, his last official act.

Irony, or a jinx.

Neither, actually. The "secret service" was originally created to fight counterfeiting of US currency, and wasn't a protective agency until 1901 or so. But with agents readily recognizable, a nice website and marked offices all over the US, one has to wonder what it is that's "secret." Maybe they're up to something they don't tell us about?

Hey, in hindsight it can be either given the Secret Service's eventual and best known role. ;)

Idk, Wiki doesn't exactly say. Could be because:
Or because of the Confederate Secret Service, or could be a combination of the two.

Okay, I'll go with the "Secret" being that they were already supposed to be protecting Abraham Lincoln. :D

It's obvious the Illuminati was behind the assasination, what with paying off Lincoln's bodyguard to be off premises in a bar during the shooting, and then the Secret Service, which Lincoln authorized under the false premise of anti-counterfeiting, was really created to keep high government officials from learning/disclosing Illuminati secrets. They are really there to control, not to protect the President, but in the case of the President*, have taken to keeping him drugged and incoherent.
