Inflatable costume could be behind Covid outbreak at California hospital

A hospital in California is facing a coronavirus outbreak among its staff that might be tied to an inflatable costume worn on Christmas to cheer up patients.

At least 43 staff members tested positive for the virus between Dec. 27 and New Year’s Day, according to a statement from Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center on Saturday. The hospital’s emergency department has been deep-cleaned and all infected staff members are isolating while infected.

The hospital is looking into whether the fan on an "air-powered costume" could have spread droplets after a staff member briefly wore it in the emergency department on Christmas Day....

because who could possibly have foreseen a fan blowing infected air around people. It was set for air only. Dumbass fan.

as the individual had no COVID symptoms and only sought to lift the spirits of those around them during what is a very stressful time,” the hospital said.

I take that to mean that the costume wearer was unknowingly infected. I doubt that a costume fan adds that much to a hospital's normal air currents from the HVAC system and people moving.

I take that to mean that the infected costume wearer's droplets, not generally infected air.

San Jose and its county, Santa Clara, has the worst of the Bay Area's pandemic. Last I heard, was, ZERO ICU beds available.

Yeah, infected person with fan seems stupid.

Correct, but I believe they're saying that they didn't know that s/he was infected. Bad luck, and maybe wasn't worth risking it.

My point - question everything, if even slightly risky - don't do it.

These times call for brains and creative thought

I agree, but I doubt anyone perceived a risk. It's not like there's a gale force air escape. I don't think that I would have been concerned if a presumably cautious, asymptomatic and perhaps regularly tested staffer wore an inflatable costume in my ER . . . unless it was a blow-up:

Whack9's Greenville, SC, 1 hour from me, had the highest rate of infection in the nation for a mid-sized city over the past week.
The US set a daily record for deaths yesterday, more than 4300. :o
