Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

"Yeah, the shooter was hyped up high on marijuana" said nobody ever.
It's been said often, from Reefer Madness to the present, but it's a lie about causation.

New study shows kids are 35 percent less likely to die (of gun violence) in states with strict gun laws

... more than 3,000 kids and teenagers are shot and killed on average in the U.S. each year, and 15,000 more are injured. That means 51 kids a day are injured — or killed — by a firearm.

... According to Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, less than half of U.S. states have passed extended background check legislation, and only 12 states require universal background checks at the point of sale....

According to North Carolinians Against Gun Violence Action Fund:
Our hearts are with the victims of the recent mass shootings, their families and friends, the communities in Gilroy and Brownsville and the family and friends of the 100 people killed every day by gun violence. But our empathy is not enough.

We are 210 days into 2019 and there have already been 246 mass shootings. That’s more than one a day. This past weekend, a rash of major shootings took lives and tore apart communities across the country. Between Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, seven mass shooting incidents were reported in California, New York, Illinois, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Kansas. In Chicago alone, 8 human beings were killed and 40 more were wounded by guns this past weekend....

Just think how bad things would be without them.

According to MoveOn in a pitch for donations for billboards:
On Sunday, a gunman with a military assault-style weapon killed three people, including a 6-year-old boy, and injured 12 at a garlic festival in California. It was the 42nd mass shooting in July alone and the 246th in America this year.1

These shootings need to stop. At festivals. At schools. At places of worship. At night clubs. At movie theaters.

There are so many simple, clear steps that lawmakers can take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in America—by passing into law policies that are supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans and even most gun owners.2,3

Universal background checks. Closing the gun show loophole. Banning assault weapons such as AR-15s. Banning bump stocks.

Indeed, the Democratic U.S. House passed two bills that would accomplish many of these goals earlier this year, but Mitch McConnell and the GOP—at the bidding of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and gun manufacturers—won't even allow the bills to come up for a vote in the Senate.4 They won't even allow federal funding for research into gun violence.5It's outrageous. And it's heartbreaking....

The horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School nearly seven years ago should have been a tipping point on gun violence in America, but since then:

There have been approximately 2,185 mass shootings.6
Congress has passed into law zero measures to make our children and communities safer.
The NRA and gun manufacturers continue to write big checks to Republican politicians.

According to polls, Mitch McConnell and other GOP senators who are up in for re-election in 2020 are increasingly vulnerable. But to defeat them in 2020—which is the only way we can finally pass legislation to address America's gun violence crisis—we need to make sure their constituents know that they're standing with the NRA and blocking commonsense reforms to address America's gun violence epidemic....

So I read the Canadian version of MSN, and the little daily polls they run look the same and some are the same topics as the US version, but they're different. Today's question: Do you own a gun? (80% No). Do you think there should be more restrictions when it comes to purchasing a gun in Canada? (63% Yes)

I don't understand, the ammosexuals have been screeching that this only happens in gun free zones in gun control states.
An ammosexual posts:
no, but the statistics say it’s 2400% more likely! Since you and the other idiots can’t do some simple research here you go!
https://crimeresearch.org/2018/06/more- ... shootings/
I post:
LOL!!! You actually believe that swallowing what John Lott's Crime Prevention Research Center says is doing "simple research". Simplistic research is more like it. You are just so precious! I know all about John Lott, Jr. and how enamored you gunhuggers are with his junk science....

Dang, just be glad there no IQ test for your compensatory fetish toy ownership. You would fail no matter how low the standard.
Another poster also trashes the ammosexual with:
The ammosexual posts:
you’re an idiot plain and simple! Here is a source from your political team! They say the same thing, try to twist the facts of course and use indirect talking points! I’ll keep posting more if you’d like!
https://backgroundchecks.org/rhetoric-v ... -know.html
I post:
You are so stupid!
Background Checks is not a "political team". They do criminal background checks for whomever. You are so gullible!
Then, your own source calls you a liar:
“There were 156 mass shootings in the US from 2009 to 2016, and only 10% occurred in gun-free zones, but 63% - in private homes.

“In fact, the Umpqua Community College, where the Oregon massacre took place, wasn’t a gun-free zone, nor are any of the public colleges or universities in Oregon. There were armed students near the scene, including at least two trained military veterans.

“More important is there’s no evidence whatsoever that shooters target locations because they are known to be gun-free.

“Gun-free zones are relatively safe”
Good one! I agree with YOUR source, you are an idiot and a liar. They trash your gunhugger myths in many other ways, too. Thanks, I’ll be using on the next one of you morons that comes along.
Aside from the humor factor, that's my main reason for sharing here. The link the ammosexual posted is not just about gun-free zones. It's a veritable treasure trove of succinct anti-ammosexual arguments. I'm still unpacking and filing it, but this ammosexual will be the cause of many ammosexual tantrums in the future.

Rhetoric vs. Research: 7 Facts About Guns Every American Should Know
One of the things discussed at the link is:
The scientific studies blame it on the civilian gun ownership, however. More guns translate into more mass shootings, not less, whereas the vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent. Only 3%-5% of violent acts are attributed to mental illness, and most don’t involve guns.

A tiny fraction of gun violence is committed by the mentally ill
Drug and alcohol abuse are much more important factors than, say, schizophrenia.

Young white guys are getting radicalized.

Most of these shooters spent a lot time in online communities like 4chan. The guy mentioned in the article above, as well as the Christchurch shooter, both released their manifesto on 8chan before going on their shooting sprees. The guy that used a vehicle to kill a bunch of people in Toronto last year called himself an "incel", which is a term that floats around a lot of these online communities.

It's very much a real thing. Go browse 4chan's political forum if you wanna see it for yourself. It's really messed up. Qanon is a 4chan creation as well.

No longer do you have to have just the right critical mass of people in the same area for ideologies to boil over and become a thing. You've got online communities accessible from anywhere in the globe where these people can come together and radicalize one another.

This last shooting is 100% a case of radicalization and not mental illness.

I had a hard time thinking how to even start this thread.

8chan's /pol/ is a raw sewage dump of genocide proponents & 3rd Reich fanboys on its best days.

On worse days, it's not only an incubator for hate crime but a shrine to mass murderers.
From your lips . . .
'Enough is enough': Cloudfare terminates 8chan, an online meeting place for 'extremist hate'

The online message board 8chan, which has been linked to three mass shootings in 2019, will be terminated, Cloudfare announced late Sunday night, just hours after the site's founder called for its end.

Cloudfare will cut off services for 8chan at midnight PDT, CEO Matthew Prince said in a statement, though he noted that another network provider could bring 8chan back online. That's what happened in 2017, when Cloudfare booted The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi message board.

"The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths," Prince said. "Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit."

During media interviews earlier Sunday, 8chan founder Fredrick Brennan called for the imageboard 's end.

El Paso Walmart shooting: Quiet Texas neighborhood stunned by connection to El Paso shooting suspect

“Shut the site down,” Brennan told the New York Times on Sunday. “It’s not doing the world any good. It’s a complete negative to everybody except the users that are there. And you know what? It’s a negative to them, too. They just don’t realize it.” ...
