And the Democrats can't be sure that they are going to beat this guy?

What does that say about them? What does it say about America?

Trump has figured out the key to political success in America: appeal to the lowest common denominator. But America deserves better than Trump.

I don't know about America not deserving what's coming to her.

But I do know that Georgia hasn't done anything to deserve it.

Yes, but Alabama did enough for two.

There are any number of indicators that, in a normal or typical election would give Trump not a chance in hell. He has two positive factors (1) incumbancy and a very zealous base; and (2) up until recently, a good-seeming economy. However, his base is less than 30% of the electorate, and he has made no effort to expand it. No president has ever yet survived an election year recession. He is the only president* to have never had approval over 50%. He is highly despised by a large percentage of people. Further, his win* was by the slimmest margin, requiring a "perfect storm" of conditions and results. The simplest way to look at it is that if Biden wins all the states Hillary did, and add either of Florida, Wisconsin or Michigan, he'll win.

Problem is, fluke though it may have been, Trump did win in 2016 and that created a bunch of spooked Dems. They were over-confident in 2016 and grossly underestimated the low-brow appeal of Trump and the level of Hillary-hate. So there's a built-in terror of getting burned again, no matter how unlikely that might be.

And, of course, 2020 is not "normal" or "typical" in any way.

As to what it says about America is that America is a sharply divided nation with some rising power among the fringes. A few years ago, it would be unthinkable for a President* or candidate to embrace the white supremists and expect to get elected. Or be openly corrupt. Or constantly lie even when the truth would serve him better. That there are people who actually support him at this point means America isn't what it used to be.

Very well said, and I agree with virtually all of it. The only part where we part is that I don't think America has changed all that much. Remember, this nation was founded on the institution of slavery. And even after that was abolished, another 100 or so years of brutal suppression of the former slaves and their descendants. This is the nation of robber barons. This is the nation of the Mai Lai massacre. This is the nation of the attempted extermination of Native Americans. This is the nation of concentration camps for Americans of Japanese ancestry. There is much to love and be proud of in America, but it is not perfect and Trump is not so much an anomaly as an expression of long suppressed evil.

But I am convinced that we can, and shall, triumph over this evil. Just as we triumphed over slavery, Jim Crow, and a dozen other grievous errors. No man, and no nation, is perfect. But that doesn't mean we need to embrace the Devil.
