Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Oh well, as one who spent all of my teenage years in San Francisco (and worked there for years after), I'm well aware of Herb Caen's "Don't call it Frisco" campaign. I only used it to mock those who use it. Capice?
You still haven't said who the supposed "Frisco haters" are here.

Yes, Vrudy has cast the "Cower" epithet countless times.

It's OK, cause it's his tacit admission he has nothing of value to post.

That's because nobody here doesn't like San Francisco. Heck, you even like Oakland. Of course, it would be nice if somebody would explain the concept of "Summer" to SF, but other than that it's probably well worth the outrageous cost to live there.

Cowering behind ignore - which you fail to comprehend the concept of - is your overt admission that you can't handle questions posed and points made when you've screwed up. Poor baby.

Famous quote: "The coldest winter I ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco" - Mark Twain (allegedly)...

I can confirm that, sort of. We moved to the Inner Sunset part of SF back in April of 1963. I was all set for another wonderful New England summer. Nope. Instead we got gray overcast skies from April to September. And then lots of rain and fog. I never did quite get used to it, and as soon as I could I moved to the Sacramento valley to go to college. Now that could get quite hot in the summers, and pretty chilly and wet in the winters.

After two and a half years in the Sac valley I transferred to Berkeley, which has a wonderful balance between heat and cold. Same as my current location (just south of Oakland and about 15 miles south of Berk). Now, sometimes, during one of our annual East Bay heat waves I might miss the fog, but not so much. Plus those heat spells last at most a week or two each summer. Didn't really have one this summer, either, that I recall. At least I didn't have to set up the little portable roll-around A/C unit.

Now, Oakland is very easy to like. Beautiful neighborhoods, the hills have recovered from the firestorm, and lots of cool places to go. And the average IQ has gone up since Al Davis left.

Misattributed

* The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

* Often attributed to Twain, but of unknown origin. This entry from Quote Investigator discusses some possible early sources.

* Twain did write, in Roughing It:
The climate of San Francisco is mild and singularly equable. The thermometer stands at about seventy degrees the year round. It hardly changes at all. You sleep under one or two light blankets Summer and Winter, and never use a mosquito bar. Nobody ever wears Summer clothing. You wear black broadcloth--if you have it--in August and January, just the same. It is no colder, and no warmer, in the one month than the other. You do not use overcoats and you do not use fans. It is as pleasant a climate as could well be contrived, take it all around, and is doubtless the most unvarying in the whole world. The wind blows there a good deal in the summer months, but then you can go over to Oakland, if you choose--three or four miles away--it does not blow there.

I was in and out of the Bay area for years and was always apparently lucky for weather. Whether it was the luck of the season I was there or just a streak of nice weather, it was always beautiful. So imagine my surprise when Lady O and I were there for a week a few years ago in July and it was effin' freezing. Literally had to buy jackets from a street vendor. Didn't ruin the trip, though. Among the other good things, we went to an excellent Chinese restaurant where we were the only non-Chinese guests. Place didn't even have a street-level presence. You had to enter a side street door and take an elevator up to the restaurant, that had a great view. Best Chinese meal ever.

Do you remember the name of the place, and what town?

I remember when we first got to SF, I wouldn't touch Chinese food the first time we went to a Chinese restaurant. My (older) siblings thought that was hilarious. But after trying some the next time, I was hooked. I have since learned how to cook basic Chinese dishes (a la Joyce Chen) and generally love the cuisine. Most of what was here in the 60's was Cantonese, which meant wonderful fish dishes. Now we have restaurants featuring cuisine from all corners of China. Heaven!

PS-Generally Jan-Feb is the coldest here. Last winter was relatively mild, though. Ice is rare, but can happen. Snow is even more rare.

No, and I don't think I could pronounce it at the time. We were staying at one of the many hotels with "Fisherman Wharf" in their name and we asked the Chinese concierge for a recommendation for a nice restaurant in Chinatown that didn't get much tourist trade. It was a very upscale place, although not unreasonably expensive for what it was. We put ourselves in the hands of our server, basically a "feed us something the chef enjoys" and it was indeed great. We had a car, but I think we took the trolley, so it would have been fairly close to the line. Place may not even be there anymore - that was at least 10 years ago.

I think this may be it -
Eight Tables
Restaurant, Chinese, $$$

On the second floor of the China Live complex is Eight Tables, a “private chateau cuisine” fine-dining restaurant meant to emulate the experience of enjoying an elaborate meal in someone’s home. The entrance is reached via a back alley and a secret elevator, which avoids the chaos from the main floor of the busy emporium and sets the stage for what’s to come: a high-end 10-course tasting menu enjoyed at one of – you guessed it – eight tables, separated by walls and screens. The menu is among the priciest in the city (wine pairings are additional), but the exceptional service, beautiful presentation and refined dishes merit the extra expense.

8 Kenneth Rexroth Place, Russian Hill, San Francisco, California, 94133, USA
That isn't exactly the experience we had, but close. And their prices have gone way up since then. But I'm pretty sure that's it.

Edit: upon further review, I think it's the same place, but probably under different ownership/management.

Thanks!

Probably out of my regular dining out budget, but the next time I'm tasked with taking a Very Important Person to dinner, I'll give it a try. Have no idea if and when that ever will happen, though.

:-)

As I recall, there are a lot of hole in the wall and quasi hidden restaurants in Chinatown. For some reason I seem to remember the Empress of China as one upper scale restaurants I've been to. Although frankly I wasn't all that impressed. Might have been the company I was with at the time.

Update: Just discovered the Empress has been closed since 2014! And apparently some guy named Boon reopened it, but ... not sure if it's in business today. Here's a link:

The Empress might be in business today. They are taking reservations for 10-20... Minmum 2 guests, prix fixe, $156 total. Yikes!

You should ask for royalties.

You won't get them, but there's no harm in asking.
That would be stupid.....so it's appropriate that you thought of it. Actually the whole concept of being rewarded for doing what's right or what needed to be done is foreign to me. But it looks good on you.

So one idiot guy - one - who runs a shady for-profit k-8 school in Miami whose 300 students include a lot of (pre-covid) anti-vaxxers because the "school" doesn't require vaxxes, says he's going to require students who get vaccinated to stay out of school for 30 days as a "precaution." Context again - one idiot guy running one tiny school not in any way connected to the public system, says something stupid.

So why is the article re-printed everywhere? And it's been on news lists for days. And, because Florida, the headlines are "Miami School ..." as if it may be system-wide. And even though the articles say the order is based on "discredited information," his stupidity is still treated like some semi-rational decision. I don't think reputable news sources should give notoriety to isolated idiots, but if they do, they should treat them like the idiots they are, to include a large round of ridicule and at least one sentence in the article that goes something like, "WTF are these fools thinking, and what sentient parent would send their kid there?"

https://news.yahoo.com/miami-school-say ... 10566.html

Same principle as the lopsided coverage of vaccine resistance. Headline should be "99% of (company's) employees 50,000 are vaccinated." But no - it's "(Company) has 500 employees refusing vaccination and will be fired."
