California’s devastating storm in maps and chartsO Really wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 8:51 pmWe've got a few days respite between rain rivers, but overall it hasn't been bad here in terms of misery or damage. On the other hand, a bit further north Uselessland is under flood watch, the 1 and much of the 101 is closed, and in southern Oregon a section of the 101 dropped 12 feet in an area where there is no detour route. And Monterey peninsula is about to become Monterey Island.

Average ANNUAL rainfall for the city of Santa Barbara is 18.98 inches.... Storms have lashed coastal cities such as Santa Cruz and San Francisco, opening sinkholes in roads and cutting power to thousands of homes.
The Central Valley towns of Planada and Merced were hit by widespread flooding, forcing some people to leave their homes....
In the last week, some areas of Santa Barbara received more than 410mm (16 inches) of rain in two days.

Forecasters say many of the same areas of the state can expect up to 200mm (8 inches) of rain in the coming five days.
Some of the rain will fall on ground which is heavily saturated, causing more flooding.
...
... California has suffered years of drought - hardening the surface of the soil and reducing the ground's ability to absorb water. That, in turn, makes run-off and flooding much more likely....

Mount Washington is 6,288.2 ft above sea level, 1.19 miles. The tropopause is 5.6 to 11 miles above sea level. Peter Forister is confused, especially for a self-described "Storm chaser // Nature Photographer // Geographer".
Edit: Never mind:
Interesting tidbit from @NWSGray – the tropopause might dip below Mt. Washington tomorrow night
That means @MWObs may briefly be located within the stratosphere #nhwx

Re: Weather
It got even worse:
"volunteers"? Show me the money! Blame Canada:Mount Washington wind chill: New Hampshire summit fell to minus 108 F, likely lowest recorded
... That's likely the lowest wind chill ever recorded in the United States since meteorologists began calculating wind chills, said Brian Brettschneider, an Alaskan climate scientist.
Reconstructing wind chill based on historic records at Mount Washington shows the wind chill also could have been at minus 108 F or below on Jan. 22, 1885. The low that day — which still stands as the record low— was minus 50 F and the 24-hour average wind speed was 89 mph, Brettschneider said. That combination would produce a wind chill below minus 108 F, he said.
The temperature on Mount Washington dropped as low as minus 46 degrees F on Friday night, with 97 mph winds, the National Weather Service said.
The summit of New Hampshire's Mount Washington is seen on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023.
... Wind chill is a concept pioneered by an Antarctica explorer and a polar scientist — Paul Siple and Charles Passel — in the 1940s. It was based on the length of time it took a vessel of near-freezing water to actually freeze under wind and temperature conditions.
The wind chill scale was modified in 2001, the weather service said, after a series of tests on volunteers who were placed in a chilled wind tunnel.
I wonder what the point is where even the weather station's life support systems are challengedWhat's causing the extreme cold?
A blast of Arctic air reached the region just as a rapid intensification of a storm system over the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador churned up powerful wind, the Associated Press reported.

True story:
We're only getting up to about 55 or so tomorrow, with expected heavy rain and some gusty wind. Weather chicks are going amuck. One said, and I quote "nobody is used to this much chill and wind. You'll need to emotionally prepare yourselves - and prepare yourselves for a rough day."
I think I'm sufficiently "emotionally prepared".

Of course, they'd say the same about the midwest.

Yeah, SD County mountains are getting snowed, unusually low, down to about 2,500 ft. Closest place for us to play in the snow is about an hour away around Julian - on a nice day. About two hours or more when it snows because of the crowds of people wanting to show their kids snow. We'll pass.Vrede too wrote: ↑Wed Feb 22, 2023 9:57 pmLegal pot will help the populace with that.
