I remember some from the 80s, but before then there were mostly mom and pop convenience stores, especially in the country or in town off the major roadways. Most, in my areas, featured a beer or coke box bottom on the checkout counter with stacks of smoked mullet separated by a square of wax paper.
It is a great fish for smoking and fried ain't bad either. Love them fried backbones.
