US man killed by car as he helped ducks cross road in Rocklin (CA)

Killed by a teenage driver, witnessed by his own children and a woman and her children in a different car. So many young lives devastated.

More than 5,000 new species discovered in Pacific deep-sea mining hotspot

A ‘gummy squirrel’, the nickname given to Psychropotes longicauda, one of the thousands of newly discovered creatures in the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

Why not? We've raped, caused mass extinctions and ruined everywhere else.

They are cute, but they'll only be available to people that can reproduce the pressure at 5,100 metres depth.

 Damn, that's about 15,500 feet. About three miles. I bet the navy wishes it could build submarines out of those things.

Could be. I had a sub that did that, but it wasn't Seaview. Mine used partially enclosed baking soda and would surface when a bubble was formed then dive when the bubble was released. It didn't steer, have "elastic motor propulsion" or fire torpedoes. Deprived childhood, I guess. :crybaby:

A very bad idea for a lot of reasons, starting with "a fed bear is a (walking) dead bear" Not to mention that not all bears have the best table manners when getting some food is involved.

A fed bear is a dead bear
5 dead at a picnic table..Story at 11..What exactly is bad?...
The bear won’t be afraid of people, will become more aggressive, and the state’s fish and game will have to put it down…all for a selfie.
I agree..That's why my scenario was the better one...
Gotchya
This appears to have taken place at Deep Creek, Maryland with a bear who is well known for his shockingly friendly disposition.

That said, the family exercised profoundly poor judgment during the interaction.
What could possibly go wrong?
Well they’re drinking lite beer so I’m not expecting a lot of good ideas from them as a group.
... and then the bear ate his hands, and we laughed and laughed.
Don't. Picnic. WithTheBears.

Why does this even need to be said?

From the article, it seems they were on private property, not a public park or forest, and the owner said the bear was "around all the time" and "never bothers anybody." Ummm, yet. The bear is probably tamer than most in the wild and may live a good life until for whatever reason he swats somebody and takes off half their face. Then he's a dead bear. Everybody involved in that is unbearably stupid.

Deep Creek Lake is practically in West Virginia, though. Maybe that's their excuse.

Another one :wtf: :
Killer whales wreck boat in latest attack off Spain

Killer whales severely damaged a sailing boat off the coast of southern Spain, the local maritime rescue service said on Thursday, adding to dozens of orca attacks on vessels recorded so far this year on Spanish and Portuguese coasts.

In the early hours of Thursday, a group of orcas broke the rudder and pierced the hull after ramming into the Mustique on its way to Gibraltar, prompting its crew of four to contact Spanish authorities for help, a spokesman for the maritime rescue service said.

The service deployed a rapid-response vessel and a helicopter carrying a bilge pump to assist the 20-metre (66 feet) vessel, which was sailing under a British flag, he added. The Mustique was towed to the port of Barbate, in the province of Cadiz, for repairs....
Guaranteed to be a TV or even big screen movie within a year. Cocaine Orca ?

Dumb headline:

British couple sailing through ‘orca alley’ gets attacked by hungry killer whales

Nothing in the video about the pod being "hungry". Great job, USA Today and Yahoo.

Yeah, dumb headline not specifically supported by details in the article. But - it's not an unreasonable assumption that an Orca is always "hungry."

"Orcas hunt everything from fish to walruses, seals, sea lions, penguins, squid, sea turtles, sharks, and even other kinds of whales. Depending on the season and where they are, their diet varies—some orcas eat more fishes and squid than seals and penguins. But wherever they are in any of the world's oceans, average-sized orcas may eat about 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of food a day. Orcas have many hunting techniques, and bumping seals off ice is just one of them."
