Mass Shootings

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Coverage of shootings is a lot like coverage of missing girls. Cute blonde soccer players get national coverage; First nation and Black girls not so much.

That's an awful thing to say about our responsible and unbiased media. 23 football fans of all races get covered, too.

What we know about Audrii Cunningham, the missing Texas girl who vanished after she left for school

"Audrii is White with blond hair and blue eyes. She stands about 4 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs about 75 pounds, the sheriff’s office said."

Police Chief, and others, plead "this is not Kansas City." Well, it turns out, it is. In 2023, KC had it most ever homicides at 182 or about one every other day all year long. Mostly with guns; mostly Black males. And that's just people that were killed. Couldn't find a number of shootings without deaths, but I'm guessing there's probably in excess of one/day. Nothing unusual about the shooting at the SB celebration, and the only difference was that there were a lot more people accidentally in the line of fire of the "good thugs with guns."

Yet nobody will admit that it's gun culture and of guns that make these things so commonplace.

... When police asked Mays why he "advanced" on the other group in the first place, Mays "replied, 'Stupid, man. Just pulled a gun out and started shooting. I shouldn’t have done that. Just being stupid,'" the probable cause affidavit said.

"When reminded that the person Lyndell Mays was shooting at was running away from him, Lyndell Mays replied, 'I know,'" the probable cause affidavit said....
Yep, "Stupid, man," individual, availability and culture :angry-banghead:

Just a boring city in a red gunhugging state:

At least 7 shot, all under age 17, in mass shooting near Indianapolis mall

"One victim was in critical condition, and the six others were stable."
... Last Sunday, five people, including an officer, were killed in a shooting in the east side of the city, the station reported. An officer shot and killed the suspect in that case.

And one person was killed and five other people were injured in a shooting at a bar on March 16, according to The Indianapolis Star....

For once they caught one before he shot anybody. Hope they'll be able to put him away for a while. Even if it's the loony bin.

5 teens injured in shooting at senior skip day gathering in Maryland park: Police
"To have something like this occur is just maddening," the police chief said.

... Three victims were released from the hospital and the sole victim listed as critical has been upgraded to stable condition, Greenbelt Police said Saturday....

The students had initially gathered in Bowie, Maryland, for senior skip day and were asked to disperse by local law enforcement, a Greenbelt Police Department spokesperson told ABC News. Many of those students then moved to Schrom Hills Park, where they participated in a large water gun fight prior to the shooting, police said....

Parishioners stopped teen with a rifle from entering church with 60 children inside

... Police were called to St. Mary Magdalen Church in Abbeville, 20 miles south of Lafayette, at 10:35 a.m. when the 16-year-old suspect tried to get in via the back door....

The suspect was arrested and later charged with terrorizing the church and two counts of possession of a firearm by a juvenile. Witnesses told KADN of Lafayette that he was dressed all in black and armed with the rifle.

He was questioned at Abbeville Police Department, alongside a parent, before he was taken to Abbeville General Hospital's behavioral unit for evaluation, police said....
Phew.

New normal?
The church now plans to have uniformed law enforcement officers outside its Masses from now on, "out of an abundance of caution," but urged anyone seeking a first Holy Communion to do so at the next available Mass.

Earlier this month, a man pulled a gun on a pastor at a church in Pittsburgh, an incident also caught on a video livestream.

Sotomayor rips Thomas’s bump stocks ruling in scathing dissent read from bench

 Hero.
What Do You Think?

Do you think Congress should or should not act to ban bump stocks through legislation after the Supreme Court recently invalidated the Trump administration's ban on the devices?

Definitely should 84%
Possibly should 3%
Definitely should not 9%
Other / No opinion 4%

... In the coming days, the Supreme Court is set to hand down another closely watched gun case that does implicate the Second Amendment. The justices are weighing whether a federal statute criminalizing gun possession for people under domestic-violence restraining orders is constitutional.

I may have to take a shower after agreeing with the gun nuts, but they're right in saying that an unloaded, locked up firearm is probably worthless if it were actually needed. To be sure, most of the perceived "threats" people want to "pertek their famblies" from never occur, and most firearms are never used in actual self defence. Nevertheless, houses do get broken into, people do get attacked, yada, and if you for whatever reason you believe you're at risk, you'll probably want a weapons back-up if your firearm is unloaded in a safe. I'd suggest bear spray and baseball bats.

Their paranoid "reasoning" is understandable, but the fact remains that a gun in the home increases the danger to self and family, not decreases it. Also, most home invasions and other family threats are not 'blitz attacks', thus allowing time to retrieve a firearm.

Panicked Arkansas grocery store shoppers hid in freezer and ran for cover amid shooting that killed 3 and wounded 10

... The country has seen a spate of shootings in the past few weeks, with 21 mass shootings recorded by the Gun Violence Archive since last Friday. Shootings permeated a Michigan splash pad, a Texas Juneteenth celebration and a Massachusetts car meetup, among other locations.

They are among at least 234 mass shootings have taken place in the United States in 2024, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter....

Well, you don't have to be smart to be a mass shooter.
On the other hand, if the plea deal included life without parole anyway, since Illinois doesn't have a death penalty he might as well stay in the news for a couple of more years with no real downside.

It did include life, but I think it's more about him just being a snowflake and/or not being able to face his reality. He was so freaked out he couldn't walk and had to be taken in and out of the courtroom in a wheelchair.

Good.
