Ketanji Brown Jackson took aim at public corruption from a bench that is immersed in an enduring corruption scandal of its own.

In the case, former small-town mayor James Snyder asked the court to determine whether a particular federal criminal statute makes it illegal for public officials to accept compensation from people or entities they help in their official role — as he did by taking a $13,000 check from a company after awarding it city contracts.

The high court’s conservative majority came down on Snyder’s side, deciding in part that the statute doesn’t cover tokens of gratitude to public officials. The statute bans people from giving gifts to officials before said officials do them a favor. But giving gifts after a favor was a different story, they said, and Snyder took a payment afterward.

Jackson disagreed.

“Greed makes governments — at every level — less responsive, less efficient, and less trustworthy from the perspective of the communities they serve,” she began her opinion.

“Snyder’s absurd and atextual reading of the statute is one only today’s Court could love,” the liberal jurist went on....

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas told attendees at a judicial conference Friday that he and his wife have faced “nastiness” and “lies” over the last several years and decried Washington, D.C., as a “hideous place.”

Ginny was a key proponent of The Big Lie and Uncle Thomas tops the list of most decent people for “nastiness” and “hideous".

... “I think there’s challenges to that. We’re in a world and we — certainly my wife and I the last two or three years it’s been — just the nastiness and the lies, it’s just incredible,” Thomas said.

“But you have some choices. You don’t get to prevent people from doing horrible things or saying horrible things. But one you have to understand and accept the fact that they can’t change you unless you permit that,” Thomas said.

The whiny hypocrisy from one of the most "horrible" Justices ever is "just incredible".

... He did not discuss the content of the criticisms directly, but said that “reckless” people in Washington will “bomb your reputation.”

“They don’t bomb you necessarily, but they bomb your reputation or your good name or your honor. And that’s not a crime. But they can do as much harm that way,” Thomas said.

... “I think what you are going to find and especially in Washington, people pride themselves on being awful. It is a hideous place as far as I’m concerned,” Thomas said.

Thomas said that it is one of the reasons he and his wife “like RVing.”

“You get to be around regular people who don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things, merely because they have the capacity to do it or because they disagree,” Thomas said.

A recreational vehicle used by Thomas also became a source of controversy. Senate Democrats in October issued a report saying that most of the $267,000 loan obtained by Thomas to buy a high-end motorcoach appears to have been forgiven....

In a Thursday ruling, the Supreme Court placed new restrictions on the ability of the Securities and Exchange Commission to charge a person or company with a violation and adjudicate it outside of federal court.

The decision in SEC v. Jarkesy is the latest in a string of cases where the court has pared back the power of federal agencies. Limiting the ability of agencies to issue regulations ― and, now, to prosecute certain legal offenses ― is a hallmark of the court’s nearly four-year-old conservative supermajority.

The ruling has implications for other agencies that, like the SEC, hold in-house tribunals and issue civil penalties for breaking the law.

Trump will likely claim that ANYTHING he did in office is protected, but that isn't the ruling. A determination has to be made that the alleged criminal action was "official."
Interestingly, the ruling would stop a lot of Biden harassment from Trump if he got back into office.
