Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Satanists in Florida offer to fill school counselor roles after DeSantis law

Florida Satanists are volunteering to fill school counselor roles after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a law allowing religious chaplains into public schools amid staffing shortages.

“Nothing in the text of the bill serves to exclude us, and no credible interpretation of the First Amendment could. Should a school district now choose to have chaplains, they should expect Satanists to participate as well,” Lucien Greaves, cofounder and spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, said in a statement to The Hill on Monday....

“Either entirely ignorant of the most basic fundamentals of constitutional law, or too incompetent to care, DeSantis fails to recognize that it is not the place of the government to confer unique rights to one religious identity while denying them to another,” he said....
Go Satan, beat Fascist DerSantis!

What a sick creep!

To stop guns in schools, NC superintendent candidate Morrow called for security cameras in bathrooms

Michele Morrow is a MAGAt homeschool parent with zero training or experience in public education. She defeated the incumbent Repub superintendent in the primary. Mo Green is the Democrat and former superintendent of Guilford County Schools and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools running against Morrow. Hopefully, NC voters will choose experience over wingnuttery.

Full disclosure: I voted for christofascist Michele Morrow in hopes that she'd give the Dem the best odds  She won 52-48, close.

She really is a dangerous QAnon flake!
She 'sarcastically' said Obama should be killed. Now she wants to control (NC) kids' education.

She has never worked in a public school and has referred to them as “indoctrination centers.” She attended the riot at the U.S. Capitol and called for former President Donald Trump to use military force to stay in power. She has been known to use hashtags affiliated with the conspiracy theory QAnon....

The lie that public schools are 'indoctrination centers'

When Morrow ran for Wake County's school board in 2022, she referred to public schools as “socialism centers” and “indoctrination centers.” Her own five children have attended public and private schools in other states, but have been homeschooled since moving to North Carolina. At one point, she told people not to send their children to public schools.

Morrow told me she stood by her claim that schools were indoctrinating children.

“Children believe any adult that is put in front of them,” Morrow told me. “And if we are telling children to be divided by the color of their skin, if we are putting politics into the classroom, if we are discussing the fact that they might be in the wrong body and that the United States is inherently racist, and that socialism is the answer for America and that capitalism is a threat to the entire world, then that is indoctrination, it is lies, and it needs to stop.”
I only wish schools were doing that ;)

 Take away 20 pounds and add some tanning bed time and she'd be close.

Back to the article:
As someone who went through the North Carolina public school system, I can assure you that I saw no brainwashing occurring. If you don’t believe me, a task force spearheaded by the lieutenant governor, conservative firebrand Mark Robinson, failed to find compelling evidence of indoctrination....
:---P That's compelling evidence of non-indoctrination.
Concerning social media posts about assassinating Obama

Morrow has come under fire for previous social media posts beyond her involvement in Jan. 6, 2021. In 2020, she called for the public execution of former President Barack Obama in a reply on X, previously Twitter.

"I prefer a Pay Per View of him in front of the firing squad," she tweeted in response to someone suggesting Obama should be sent to Guantanamo Bay.

She has also called for the killing of President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and a handful of other prominent Democrats. Morrow has also repeatedly used the QAnon-associated hashtag WWG1WGA on her personal social media account....
Lock her up and give her anti-psychotic drugs.

The kids are badasses!
NC students finding new ways of expression with Parents Bill of Rights in place

For the next nine months, students in school districts across North Carolina will have a new reality with the policies behind Senate Bill 49. SB 49 is also known as the Parents Bill of Rights and the "Don't Say Gay" law.

The Parents Bill of Rights was passed at the state level and bans kindergarten through fourth-grade teachers from using material related to sexuality and gender identity in schools....

The teachers across North Carolina elementary schools won't be able to have lessons involving gender identity and sexuality, but students are finding ways around it.

Those with the Campaign for Southern Equality say that students are using books and other items for assignments like book reports or a show and tell. Along with that, clubs and sports teams are doing things like painting their nails to show their gender expression.

A big reason for this being the case is that the law doesn't prohibit students from bringing in LGBTQ+ related materials.

“What we’re seeing as we’re heading back to school is a lot of resistance to SB 49 organizing,” Campaign Supportive Schools Director Craig White told News 13. “We’re seeing students take more responsibility for their own education and things that are banned and censored by the state. Students are teaching each other about that content.”

The campaign is encouraging parents, teachers and students to file official federal complaints against their school district if they experience discrimination and bullying this school year because of Senate Bill 49.

A full report on the impact the Parents Bill of Rights could have on this school year will air on Wednesday, Aug. 28 on News 13.

Donald Trump Tells Unforgivable Whopper About 'Transgender' Classes In School
The former president had a sympathetic audience for his B.S. in Fox Nation's Kellyanne Conway.

Donald Trump on Monday suggested “transgender” is the principal subject now taught in schools. He had a sympathetic ear in Fox Nation host Kellyanne Conway, his former adviser who introduced the world to the concept of “alternative facts.”

“We want reading, writing and arithmetic,” Trump said in a conversation about his plans for education reform if he wins the election next month. “Right now, you have mostly transgender. Everything’s transgender.”
Only in weird MAGAland. We normal people and our schools don't obsess about it.
“Some of these school programs, I looked at it the other night ― they’re destroying our country,” the former president added.
 Henny Penny perpetual victim :obscene-birdiered:
... The president has leaned on transphobia to characterize public schools as a breeding ground for extreme ideology on gender ― and his online plan for education reflects that.

Cutting federal funding “for any school or program pushing Critical Race Theory, gender ideology, or other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children” is the top priority listed on that page....
What is "gender ideology", anyhow? :headscratch:
No "political content"? I guess the founders and everything DonOLD are out then, right?

Far-Right Candidates Are Trying To Take Over Public Schools Across The Country
Consequential school board races in North Carolina, Maryland and other states could change the education system as we know it.

... The blueprint for a right-wing, Moms for Liberty-style candidate has been made, and conservatives are following it. These candidates typically rail against “critical race theory,” a college-level academic framework for understanding structural racism that has been co-opted by conservatives to mean talking about race at all and making white people feel uncomfortable. They falsely claim books about gender or sexual identity are inherently pornographic. They may smear teachers as groomers, and make sure transgender children are targeted and ostracized at school.

Parental rights and fighting to keep trans kids from playing sports are now Republican talking points at all levels of government....

North Carolina

There is perhaps no state where more is on the line for public education than North Carolina. Some of the largest school districts in the state could end up with an ultraconservative majority, and the Republican candidate for the top statewide educational role attended the Jan. 6, 2021, rally at the U.S. Capitol and has no experience in education.
I hope voters get that she's a wingnut. That's why I voted for her in the primary
... (The book in question was “Tomorrow Is Too Far” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which depicts a relationship between cousins and has the line “he tried to fit what you both called his banana into what you both called your tomato.”)
:headscratch: What have christofascists got against fruit?
To Democrats, the GOP vision is clear. “Their goal is to make public schools go away,” Kevyn Creech, the chair of the Wake County Democrats, told HuffPost. “They want to get rid of the Department of Education, make everything religious, and privatize it all.”
At taxpayer expense :angry-cussing:
After defeating the Republican incumbent in March, Morrow made headlines when CNN discovered that she had attended the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection with her children. (There is no evidence that she entered the Capitol building or committed any crimes.) She has also called for the execution of prominent Democrats and made a video saying former President Donald Trump should use the U.S. military to stay in power after he lost the election in 2020.

Morrow ran for school board in Wake County in 2022 and lost by 20 points. As a candidate for superintendent, she has lobbed homophobic and transphobic attacks at Green and vowed to rid the state’s schools of diversity, equity and inclusion programs and censor what teachers can say in the classroom.

Educators believe that a Morrow win will set the state’s schools on a dark path.

“Morrow and her extremist agenda will push our public schools further behind,” Walker Kelly said. “We will continue to see the further underfunding and disrespect of our public school system.”

The state superintendent would work closely with the Republican-led North Carolina General Assembly — meaning Morrow could wield influence over the schools and usher in her extremist agenda, which centers white conservative Christian ideology.
