Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

About damn time. WTF took this long?

Biden to close ‘gun-show loophole’ and expand background checks for firearms
... The rule was issued under a provision of the (June) 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. It requires that anyone who sells guns for profit to have a license and that buyers be subject to a background check, including at firearms shows and flea markets. The administration had been working on the rule since last spring....
No explanation why it took 9 months to start work on the rule. Then:
They probably want it as lawsuit-proof as possible;

13-year-old dies in Phoenix after teen pulls out real gun during Nerf gun fight

... Earlric Reynolds sustained a fatal gunshot wound while he and Adolfo Villalva, 18, were playing with Nerf guns yesterday afternoon near 7th Avenue and Hatcher Road.

... Court records show Villalva allegedly told investigators his mother keeps a gun under the seat of her car. The teenager allegedly took the gun and placed it in his pocket because it "looked cool."

Villalva indicated he was handling the Nerf toy gun and the real gun at the same time while playing around with Reynolds. While pointing both objects at the 13-year-old, Villalva said he pulled what he thought was the toy's trigger but actually pulled the firearm's trigger.

Police have taken Villalva into custody and he's facing charges of manslaughter and evidence tampering.

Moron with a gun:

81-year-old charged with murder of Uber driver he mistakenly believed was a scammer, police say

Without a gun making him a "tough guy" he would have called the cops like any sane citizen would have done. Now, he'll die in prison.

Minor with a gun:
Texas boy, 10, confesses to fatally shooting a sleeping man when he was 7, authorities say

... After obtaining a pistol he found in the glove box of his grandfather’s truck, the child told investigators he entered Rasberry’s RV, according to the release.

Authorities said the child stated he had never met Rasberry though had seen him walking around the RV earlier that day.

The child told investigators he saw Rasberry sleeping, approached him and fired a shot, striking the man once in the head, according to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office....

“The child was also asked if he was mad at Brandon for some reason or if Brandon had ever done anything to him to make him mad, the child stated no,” according to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office’s news release....

In Texas, a child can’t be legally held responsible for a criminal act before reaching 10 years old. Because the child was 7 years old at the time of Rasberry’s death, the Gonzales County Attorney’s Office will not file or accept murder charges in the case, according to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office....
Makes sense, but then anyone allowing a child younger than 10 access to a gun should be legally held responsible for a criminal act. Lock grandfather up!

Without a gun making him a "tough guy" he would have never attacked, or his sleeping victim might have fought off and survived an attack.

The technicalities of "legal" sometimes obscure reality. F'rinstance, a 17-year old may not be legally able to consent to a sexual relationship with the hot teacher, but clearly he can, of his own accord, voluntarily agree and happily so. And while I don't advocate actually charging a 7-year old with murder, I think if some serious behavioural/psychological attention isn't given to him, he'll just be a time bomb waiting to go off when he's old enough to buy/steal another and bigger gun.

That is a recourse here. I believe that at any age he can be adjudicated in need of mandatory and indefinite inpatient or intensive outpatient psych care.

Still, lock grandfather up!

Back when geezers were kids, it wasn't unusual for kids to carry around their cowboy guns or play some version of cops and robbers shooting at each other. I suppose it's possible that a kid then might not know the difference in a toy gun and a real one and accidentally shoot somebody while thinking he was playing. But in 2024 any kid that has been taught it's ok to shoot somebody in their sleep is gonna be bad news sometimes.

Similarly, everyone in 2024 knows the connection between guns and our tragic suicide rate.

Did TikTok videos inspire a teen’s suicide? His mom says she found graphic evidence

Yes, TikTok sounds culpable, but the parents knew that Mason was troubled yet he still had access to a gun at home :wtf:

Well, the Turks&Caicos people know how to enforce gun laws. So I don't really think the Americans getting arrested for bullets in their luggage intended any harm and I'll even believe they didn't know they were there. And I think the fines given so far are fair, and that whining about a sovereign-ish country enforcing its own laws is stupid.

So far, we've heard that one guy "accidentally" left bullets after a hunting trip and another after a trip to the shooting range. Okfine. But you guys are gun owners with a plane ticket to Turks where you know or should know that guns and ammo are rigidly forbidden. Since you know you use that bag to carry firearms in, wouldn't it be worth a few extra minutes to make sure it's empty?

I've been to Turks&Caicos a couple of times - went diving around the big hole, stayed on Grace Bay, had some great food, drank wine on the beach, and went island exploring in a piece of crap rental Suzuki. Transit in was painless then - no real search or screening. Just show the passport and go. But it's different now, and it hasn't been exactly a secret that they've cracked down on firearm stuff.

Clueless ammosexual #1: "20 rounds of ammunition in his luggage". 20 rounds!
"$6,700 fine and a suspended one-year sentence."
Oblivious ammosexual #2:
... Wenrich is an emergency medical technician and a 911 operator who sailed on a cruise ship to Grand Turk.

Personnel at a security checkpoint found two rounds of ammunition in his bag when he tried to board the cruise ship.

Wenrich said the ammunition was left over from a recent hunting trip and he was unaware the two rounds were still in his backpack....
3 chances to remove the ammo:
After the hunting trip
Before departing for the cruise ship
Before taking the bag off of the cruise ship for a day trip
"$9,000 fine and was sentenced to time served"
Oblivious ammosexuals #3-5: The earlier arrests are literally the first thing that pops up when one googles Turks & Caicos

Sooner or later there will be jail sentences. Lock them up!

Wannabe Charles Bronson:
Off-duty security guard faces murder charge for gunning down 17-year-old returning airsoft gun to store
Aaron Brown Myers, 51, told police that he had not been hired to protect the area but was voluntarily conducting ‘overwatch’

An off-duty security guard in Seattle has been charged with murdering teenage boy who was returning a defective airsoft gun to a sporting goods shop

Hazrat Ali Rohani, 17, was visiting a Big 5 branch in Renton, Washington with his friends last Wednesday evening when 51-year-old Aaron Brown Myers approached the group with a real gun in his hand, according to court documents.

Even though he had not been hired to protect the store and had no authority to give them orders, Myers allegedly threatened the boys into dropping their ‘guns’, tackled one of them to the ground, and ultimately shot Rohani at least seven times.

He later told investigators that he believed the teenagers were about to commit a robbery and felt “a duty to act”, claiming that they repeatedly ignored his commands to surrender.

However, surveillance footage contradicts Myers’ account of events, according to a police statement seen by The Independent....

Supreme Court upholds federal gun ban for domestic abusers

In a big win for gun control advocates, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld a federal law that bans domestic abuse offenders from possessing a firearm. The vote was 8-1, with Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting....

Gonna have to settle for the waning influence thanks to the infighting.
