Speaking of stats, here’s a question for you:

Let’s say you already have a home run, triple and double in the game. It’s your last at-bat, and you hit a clean shot into the outfield.

You can most likely get a double out of it. But do you try? Or do you settle for the single you can get get the “cycle”?
Wouldn't that depend somewhat on the score, whether we're behind or ahead?

Let’s say your team is 1 run ahead and it’s the eighth inning.
Then nope, take two.
The cycle is cute, but it's not better than HR, 3B and 2 x 2B. Plus, people would notice your lack of effort in that final AB.

I guess so. Hey, I just googled. The record for most home runs by a player in a game is four. 16 players have accomplished this feat. Pretty amazing!

It's more than cute, it's the batter's equivalent of a no hitter and about as rare.

But the bottom line and probably an unwritten rule is win the game and you aren't bigger than the team.

There have been pitchers who've lost no hitters and they'd prefer the win.

That's a good list, I remember the Phillies Cubs game and Mike effing Schmidt.

How rare is HR, 3B and 2 x 2B? Possibly rarer since doubles are more difficult than singles? No one knows because you can't put a cute name to it like the "cycle". You are right to choose the team over the cycle.

Yeah that was about as dramatic as it gets. Still 2 games back from the Dodgers for division lead, but that's closer than anybody has been lately.

Congrats!

Orioles clinch playoff berth with 'sense of relief'
Phew :happy-cheerleaderkid:
Oakland A's fans say painful farewell ahead of move to Las Vegas

... The concession stands are mostly shuttered, collateral damage from the team's decision to announce an eventual move to Las Vegas -- first stop: Sacramento -- and leave Oakland without a major professional sports franchise for the first time since 1960. The A's will play their final game in the Coliseum on Sept. 26, the conclusion to 57 seasons in a building that has been nearly abandoned and ignored by fans and team ownership since John Fisher announced a deal to move to Las Vegas nearly 18 months ago. The place feels hollowed out, its soul cast aside....

... As Thursday approaches, they'll gear up to contend with the emotions. All those quiet nights, all those cathartic chants into the ether, figure to be a prelude to one last blowout. The die-hards swear it'll be peaceful; they'll be content to stare out at the field for as long as it takes to make sure they remember. They've learned through experience: If nobody wants to throw them a party, they'll throw it themselves.
:crybaby:

The only good thing about this is Useless disappointment.

Best chance the Padres have had for years (decades?) and #1 pitcher Musgrove is gonna have to get tommyjohn. And tomorrow they open NLDS against the dreaded Dodgers.

Damn, might as well be a Cubbie fan.
