My house was obliterated . First a giant tree fell and smashed a hole in the roof in one room. Then maybe 45 minutes later another smashed my living room to bits. THEN the rain flooded my house.
Every so often I'll hear more trees fall. This is bad!
OMG Dude, so sorry.
The neighborhood looks completely different. So many trees fell. It's crazy! Used to be all woods, now it's completely open.
This type of thing was my fear. It's been so long since there was any type of event that clears branches and weak trees that a big one like this would be catastrophic. Add the time of year when the trees are still full of leaves makes it worse.
You have power?
No power here. Yeah it was almost erie listening to them fall.
Yeah, my house was really wooded too. During Ivan we slept in the basement. There was one ice storm we had in the mid 90's that felt like a war zone. Every 30 seconds it was CRACK then BOOM as branches and whole trees fell.
Don't think we're going to hear from Vrede for a bit too. Hendersonville looks devastated also.

I used to live down the street from Vrede. His place was in a relatively flat area with a paved expanse in front. My house was on higher ground about a quarter mile down the road but surrounded by tall trees. I always worried one would fall on me.....there were about twelve chances of it. Anyway, hope he's ok down there. I just today got power back after it going off Friday about 4pm. There is a lack of service trucks here since I figure most of them are further south. I've been eating donuts and cheese crackers for a day and a half.

Damn, man, I sure hate to hear that. Hope it's not too much ordeal to deal with insurance and contractors to fix it back. Best of luck, bud.

Welcome back.
Hendersonville is a disaster area there's very little information coming out. 99% of the county is without power and the water and sewer systems are down.
This was posted yesterday from the county government. Haven't seen any updates.
Current Situation:
Henderson County has declared a State of Emergency due to Hurricane Helene. The State of Emergency is also proclaimed at the request of the Mayors in the Town of Fletcher, Town of Laurel Park, Village of Flat Rock and Town of Mills River. The City of Hendersonville has also declared a State of Emergency as revoking all special event permits until the end of the state of emergency.

Vrede is eating cheese crackers, doughnuts and whatever he's got in a can.
Damn, this is more than anything I experienced in the thirty years I lived in Buncombe or Henderson Counties. The worst thing I recall was the blizzard of 93.....the snow was so deep the only way to get out of the house was to go raise the garage door in the basement. Neither the front or back storm doors could be moved even an inch due to the snow.
But I hope they'll be able to get things under control soon.
It's hard to imagine the devastation. Biltmore Village always flooded some, but it looks like this may have been "the big one" for them. And how long has the strip there at Chimney Rock been there? Probably almost as long as there's been a park there, like from early 1900's. And even if the Lake Lure dam survived, I wonder if they'll be able to safely repair it and will likely have to mostly drain the lake to do it.

I moved there in the fall of 93, just after the blizzard.
But we went through numerous tropical storms and ice events, the worst being Opal and Ivan. Ten inches of rain and the winds. I knew this would be bad from a power and tree standpoint, when there's not an event for years that thins the trees and branches it's a recipe for disaster for fully leafed trees when one does happen.
Doubly so when it's this magnitude.
The amount of rain and flooding was unimaginable. There's still very little information coming out. I think the Times News is effectively shut down, they seem to just be running Citizen Times articles with none of their own.
Wlos has some stuff, but little outside of Asheville. Chimney Rock is gone and Marshall is under water. Haven't heard anything about Brevard.
Just check Facebook, friends are checking in left and right. Guess cell service is finally being restored. The mess is as imagined. No power, no water, roads that are barely passable and no grocery stores open.
Eamus Catuli~AC 000000000101010202020303010304 020405....Ahhhh, forget it, it's gonna be a while.

I mostly see stories on yahoo news feed. Some are with WLOS origin. But everything I've seen points to a king hell big disaster. My old house in Hendersonville was exactly one mile from the main road (Hwy 25) so Vrede is about 3/4 mile from the same road. Hope he's able to get to it. There are some tall trees than could hit his place if they fell. And there's an Ingles that's close enough to walk to assuming its open.
In Erwin, TN several dozen people had to be airlifted from the roof of a hospital due to the flood there. Things aren't too bad here, though....just a few trees down here and there and I got power back Saturday afternoon.
To all of you impacted by Helene, my heart and prayers go out to you. I hope you are safe and will be able to piece your lives back together as quickly and smoothly as possible. We haven’t had a major hurricane here since 1992, and it wasn’t anywhere near as devastating as what you just went through. Please take care.
