Yeah, I know - to keep saying the fault is on the law and not on the enforcers is just farting into the wind, but that doesn't mean it's not true. Back in 1986 when IRCA (Immigration Reform and Control Act) was passed and yes, that's a Reagan bill, employer began being required to have all new employees fill out the I-9 form. The I-9 requires the applicant to produce, and the employer to look at, various specified forms of identification and eligibility for employment. Sound reasonable, right? And enforcement was, maybe still is, vigorous with the fine to an employer for failing to get an I-9 about the same as actually hiring an undocumented person. But - big but - employers could not verify the credentials presented were real, nor were employers held responsible for accepting fake credentials. Soooooo - if you require those guys you picked up from in front of WalMart to fill out the I-9 and show you some paper, you're home free with the Immigration people. "Their credentials were fake?!! (clutching pearls) How can that be? I had no idea" Meanwhile you've got a year or so of work out of them before they (might) get caught in a Social Security number mismatch. A better solution back then, and a better solution now is to hammer the employers who hire undocumented workers, including putting them out of business if necessary, and find better ways to make immigrants in compliance. But then, if you solved your immigration "problem" you wouldn't have a political football, would you?

A wise man once said "fixation is the way of death; fluidity is the way of life." Bush and Reagan would both be anathema to the current version of wat passes for the Republican party. It's become a cult of lies and ignorance.

Were the arrestees criminals? No, they were hardworking, taxpaying contributors to the community. An Omaha food plant owner says he followed the rules for hiring immigrants. It was raided anyway.
The owner of an Omaha food packaging company says his business has been unfairly hamstrung by federal immigration officials, who raided the plant and arrested more than half its workforce.
The raid took place despite the company meticulously following the government's own system for verifying the workers were in the country legally, owner Gary Rohwer said Wednesday.
Glenn Valley Foods now is operating at about 30% of capacity as the business scrambles to hire more workers, Rohwer said as he stood outside the plant.
Pffft, they're too busy being jackboots.... “I’d like to see the United States government ... come up with a program that they can communicate to the companies as to how to hire legitimate help. Period,” he said.
TACO DonOLD, Friendly Fire Gnome, InHoman and Lyin' Lyons are bad for business.... The raid, in the southeastern section of Omaha where nearly a quarter of residents are foreign born according to the 2020 census, led to hundreds of people turning out to protest Tuesday evening. But it also had a chilling effect on the south Omaha community.
The Metropolitan Community College’s South Omaha campus and an Omaha library branch in the area closed Tuesday afternoon, and several businesses along south Omaha's normally bustling 24th Street closed as news of the raid spread. Several of them remained closed Wednesday, said Douglas County Board of Commissioners Chairman Roger Garcia, whose district covers south Omaha.
“Everybody’s still on alert, waiting to see what happens today and in the coming days,” Garcia said. “So there’s still a lot of anxiety and fear out there.”
That fear will show up in the form of a weakened economy in Omaha, he added.
“You know, when products are not being sold, taxes are not being collected, and people are not able to get their goods as well. So it affects all of us,” he said.
Heroes, serving the public when ICE is a cancer upon it.... The raid came on the same day of the inauguration of newly elected Omaha Mayor John Ewing, a Democrat who unseated three-term Republican Jean Stothert last month.
During a news conference Wednesday to address the raid, Ewing declined to speculate on whether the timing of it was intended to distract from his swearing-in. But he denounced the action by federal authorities, saying, “My message to the public is that we are with them.”
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer also declared that his department will play no part in checking immigration or the legal status of residents in the community.
“That is not our mission. Our mission is public safety,” the chief said. “I need victims to come forward. They will not come forward if they’re fearful of Omaha Police Department being immigration officers.”

TACO!CNN Host trolls Trump in real time following rage post
Mediaite reports CNN ‘NewsNight’ anchor Abby Phillip had a quick comeback to President Donald Trump minutes after he rage-posted about negative commentary he saw on her show—while claiming nobody watches her show.
Phillip had credited recent highs in the stock market to Trump “backing down” on his tariffs threats.
“Here’s one [explanation for the good economy] from Jason Furman, an economist,” Phillip said. “The macro economy is doing decently, he said, especially when it comes to tariffs. The market is now more confident that Trump will back off, if necessary. He added in April, I think the fear was that he would just plow ahead no matter what. Now, there is a sense that there are realities that he won’t try to blow past.”
“… [T]he truth is Trump is, in fact, backing down and the markets have calmed because of that,” she said.
It was close to midnight when Trump obviously saw the show and slammed it.
“Where does CNN get its talent?” Trump posted. “Just watched someone named Abby Phillip lecture her audience on Tariffs and the economy (which is doing record business!). She has absolutely no idea what she is talking about, strictly 3rd rate. Fortunately, the audience has long ago left CNN, and it will only get WORSE. LOSERS ALL!!!”
Phillip took to X at the end of the show, responding with a post pointing out that her show obviously had one member left among its audience.
“Thank you for watching Mr. President,” Phillip wrote above a screenshot of Trump’s post.

Re: It's the economy, stupid.
Why aren't more people - even trumper repugs - saying widespread tariffs are a bad stupid idea? The purpose of a tariff is to protect vital industries, not to raise prices on everything that crosses the border. If you've got a "backbone" industry, like steel and cars used to be, and you want to give it an advantage over international competitors, you can enact a tariff. But - big but - if you don't have that industry, you've got nothing to protect and you're stepping on your own dick to arbitrarily raise the prices for consumers. The US used to have a booming textile industry, and now it doesn't. It doesn't have one not because of international competition per se, but because American companies moved their production elsewhere. Tariffs wouldn't have helped in that case. What possible value comes from charging a tariff on international goods that you don't even make here anyway? Let's say the San Diego Zoo wants Pandas, which it did. They can't order one up from Kansas somewhere - Pandas are only in China. So if you want a Panda, you have to get a Chinese Panda and you have to pretty much agree to whatever terms are offered because you need that Panda more than China needs to let you have it. And it's somehow of value to anyone for the US government to tag an additional 50-100-whatever percent tariff on the Panda just because it came from China? OK, so I made up the Panda tariff part because we had our Pandas before Trump had the chance to tariff them, but the principle is the same. Unless you've got a compelling reason to protect a vital industry from real competitive risk, tariffs are crazy.
