With all the other abominations going on, including 12M losing Medicaid :angry-banghead: , I haven't heard anything about the FEMA cuts lately. Y'all?

Maybe we'll have to wait for the first hurricane. :problem:
How about the NOAA and NWS cuts?
14 children in Texas are among the 37 dead from flash floods as the search continues for the missing

KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) — Rescuers scoured flooded riverbanks littered with mangled trees Saturday and turned over rocks in the search for more than two dozen children from a girls’ camp and many others missing after a wall of water blasted down a river in the Texas Hill Country. The storm killed at least 32 people, including 14 children.
The destructive fast-moving waters rose 26 feet (8 meters) in just 45 minutes before daybreak Friday, washing away homes and vehicles.
:o 26 feet!
... Authorities were coming under growing scrutiny Saturday over whether the camps and residents in places long vulnerable to flooding received proper warning and whether enough preparations were made....

Raging storm hit camp in middle of the night

Some 27 children were among the missing from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along the river, he said....

AccuWeather said the private forecasting company and the National Weather Service sent warnings about potential flash flooding hours before the devastation.

“These warnings should have provided officials with ample time to evacuate camps such as Camp Mystic and get people to safety,” AccuWeather said in a statement that called the Hill Country one of the most flash-flood-prone areas of the U.S. because of its terrain and many water crossings.

Officials defended their actions while saying they had not expected such an intense downpour that was the equivalent of months' worth of rain for the area.

One National Weather Service forecast earlier in the week "did not predict the amount of rain that we saw,” said Nim Kidd, chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

Helicopters, drones used in frantic search for missing

... Authorities said about 850 people had been rescued. U.S. Coast Guard helicopters were flying in to assist.

One reunification center at an elementary school was mostly quiet Saturday after taking in hundreds of evacuees the day before.

“We still have people coming here looking for their loved ones. We’ve had a little success, but not much,” said Bobby Templeton, superintendent of Ingram Independent School District....

‘No one knew this kind of flood was coming’

The forecast for the weekend had called for rain, with a flood watch upgraded to a warning overnight Friday for at least 30,000 people. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said the potential for heavy rain and flooding covered a large area.

“Everything was done to give them a heads up that you could have heavy rain, and we’re not exactly sure where it’s going to land," Patrick said. "Obviously as it got dark last night, we got into the wee morning of the hours, that’s when the storm started to zero in.”
That's what happened here. It was still dark on Friday morning when we got blasted.
Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, the county's chief elected official, said: “We do not have a warning system.”

When pushed on why more precautions weren't taken, Kelly said no one knew this kind of flood was coming....
There were NWS warnings, but people are questioning whether they were assertive enough. Being nighttime were cell phone alarms adequately utilized? Were Emergency Services adequately mobilized by NWS? These questions will inevitably include the effects of DonOLD's NWS and NOAA cuts.

What kind of person pushes a weather conspiracy theory while some families mourn the loss of loved ones, and others still await news they fear in their souls will tear them apart? The answer is a monster. An evil, unempathetic, inhumane shit. A vile, indecent bastard.

Such is Kandiss Taylor. A MAGA candidate for US Representative from Georgia. This flint-hearted shrike heard the news of the floods in Texas and took to Twitter. Not to offer compassion and condolences. Not even to offer the usual anodyne “thoughts and prayers.” But instead, to offer a barbulous screed so insensitive that even Trump would be loath to defend it.

... Even Musk’s algorithms couldn’t let this vile insensitivity pass unremarked. Her untimely and unscientific assertion was soon challenged by “Community Notes.”

So far her tweet has 248 “likes” — who the fuck are these people? However, as she has also received 1,800 replies she is getting kicked in the ass with the “ratio.” I scrolled through the responses looking for those similar-minded to the petulant pestilence. If there were any callous enough to explain their agreement, they were few. I couldn’t find any in the first 100 or so replies.

Kandiass’s best political strategy would have been to delete the post — without comment, if she’s a chicken. Even zealots have to know there’s a line. Texas flood victims: Girl 'having time of her life' and 'heart and soul' of camp
(long list, tragic stories)

52 confirmed dead now, 15 children, more than 2 dozen children still missing from the Christian girls camp.
... Local officials said over 12,000 homes have been damaged in the flooding ...

New bouts of rain could worsen deluge, trigger new flooding

More rain was expected to fall Sunday across the Texas Hill Country, threatening to trigger new floods and worsen the deluge in the devastated, rain-soaked region.

The National Weather Service in Austin and San Antonio said flood watches were extended into Sunday, when 2 to 4 inches of rain was expected to fall across parts of the region. Some isolated areas could see as much as 10 inches of rain.

"Any additional heavy rain will lead to flash flooding where it occurs and downstream," the weather service said.
:problem: :(
... Tonia Fucci, a Pennsylvania resident visiting her grandmother for the Independence Day weekend, woke early Friday to the sound of heavy rain "coming down in buckets."

She heard something more ominous: loud, startling cracking noises.

"It's indescribable, the sounds, of how loud they were, which turned out to be ... the massive cypress trees that came down along the river," she told Reuters.

Fucci, who was staying near the Guadalupe River, filmed on her phone a torrent of muddy water flooding the road to her grandmother's house. She said she received National Weather alerts on her phone hours after the flood had already hit....
:ateeth: Thanks, MAGA.
... the number of missing is still a question mark. “Right now we’re kind of looking at this in two ways,” Rice said. “Call it the known missing, which is the 27 camp kids that are missing. We will not put a number on the other side because we just don’t know.”

... “We don't know how many people were in tents on the (river)side, in small trailers by the side, in rented homes by the side, because it was going to be the Fourth of July holiday" ...
:o Crap. There must be bunches of neighbors, friends and families that won't even know their people are missing until they don't return tonight.
Were there any warnings before the flooding?

... State emergency management officials had warned as early as Thursday that west and central Texas faced heavy rains and flash flood threats, citing National Weather Service forecasts ahead of the holiday weekend.

The forecasts, however, "did not predict the amount of rain that we saw
," W. Nim Kidd, director of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, told a news conference Friday night.
:problem:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/texas-offici ... 34930.html
... U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said Saturday it was difficult for forecasters to predict just how much rain would fall. She said the Trump administration would make it a priority to upgrade National Weather Service technology used to deliver warnings.

“We know that everyone wants more warning time, and that's why we're working to upgrade the technology that's been neglected for far too long to make sure families have as much advance notice as possible,” Noem said during a press conference with state and federal leaders....
How will that happen given the drastic NOAA and NWS cuts in budget and staff that Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Commerce, has overseen?

Christian girls summer camp devastated by floods holds decades-long history with presidents, Texas politicos

More than two dozen children have died from the devastating flash floods gripping Texas' Hill Country, which is home to popular youth summer camps, including Camp Mystic, a Christian girls' summer program that holds deep roots with Texas politicians and presidential families stretching back decades.

Flash floods inundated Kerr County, Texas, and the surrounding area in central Texas' Hill Country early on the Fourth of July holiday. Warnings over the flooding were issued Thursday, but the devastation hit the area in the early morning hours of Friday, taking residents by surprise.

Kerr County, Texas, is home to a handful of youth summer camps, including Camp Mystic, a Christian girls summer camp established in 1926 by University of Texas football and basketball coach "Doc" Stewart.

MAGA is evil, heartless, unpatriotic and prejudiced:
Trump’s response to flooding in Texas reflects glaring inequality

The Trump administration’s politicization of federal disaster aid was on display over the weekend.

President Donald Trump’s provision of disaster aid to help Texas respond to deadly flooding in Kerr County — the conservative-leaning region that helped elect GOP Rep. Chip Roy — was appropriately urgent. His approach to recent catastrophes in states led by Democrats? Not so much....

But Trump and his administration have taken a markedly different approach to federal assistance for various Democratic-led states — slashing, stalling or outright denying money for disaster aid, sometimes for nakedly political purposes....
Deadly wildfires in Los Angeles County - MAGA whining, lying and unrelated partisan conditions on aid
Trump himself has said that California instituting a restrictive voter identification law is a “condition” for him to administer more money, so he clearly doesn’t think politicization of disaster aid is a problem — despite his lie-filled allegations about President Joe Biden’s administration after Hurricane Helene last fall.
Washington state bomb cyclone in November - Fuck off
... And the administration has denied North Carolina Democratic Gov. Josh Stein’s request to get fully reimbursed for Helene cleanup, a move that could severely undermine the state’s years-long recovery efforts. FEMA similarly determined that the request is “not warranted.” ...

Yep.
... The president has been outspoken about his goal of shutting down FEMA by the end of hurricane season and giving states a greater share of the financial burden of disaster recovery. In the meantime, the administration seems to be using the agency as a means to assist people and places seen as friendly to Trump — and to punish those that aren’t.

After disasters like the Texas flood, Trump reflexively blames Biden

... “If you look at that water situation, that was really the Biden setup,” Trump said....

And indeed, this has become Trump’s M.O. When something bad happens – including tragedy – Trump’s reflex has been to blame his predecessor. And often, despite Leavitt’s admonishment, he casts blame very quickly.

After a tragic crash in the Potomac River near Washington, DC, in late January that killed 67 people, Trump blamed the Biden administration and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies – despite no evidence forming anything close to such a link. He did so even as bodies were being pulled from the river.

In May, after more crashes and technical problems that in some cases traumatized air traffic controllers, Trump added that “Biden didn’t do a thing for four years.”

And just last week, Trump suggested air traffic controllers would have had better equipment, but “then Biden canceled the order when he came in.” The comment echoed previous ones from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

It’s not clear what Trump was referring to. Administrations have for decades declined to proactively modernize air traffic control. That included Trump proposals that were never enacted, the New York Times reported.

After an antisemitic firebomb attack in Boulder, Colorado last month that led to dozens of injuries and eventually a death, Trump the next day blamed “Biden’s ridiculous Open Border Policy.”

Other top administration officials echoed that line, with White House adviser Stephen Miller calling the suspect an “illegal alien” who benefited from the Biden’s “suicidal immigration” policies.

The reality was more complex, as the Atlantic reported. The Egyptian man had arrived in 2022 during the Biden administration, but he didn’t cross the border illegally. He instead arrived on a tourist visa that Trump’s first administration had frequently awarded, and then applied for asylum – a process that allows one to temporarily stay in the country. That application was still pending when the attacks occurred.
Opps, bigots TACO DonOLD and Stephen Miller LIED, again.
Trump came into office hailing his role in securing a ceasefire in Gaza.

After it fell apart in March, Trump was asked about a UNICEF report that more than 300 children had been killed and more than 600 had been injured in Gaza following the breakdown of ceasefire talks.

Asked who he blamed, Trump didn’t name Hamas or Israel, but instead Biden....

Trump promised to end the war between Ukraine and Russia instantly upon taking office. And when repeatedly questioned about the lack of results months into his second term, he will often fall back on calling it “Biden’s war.”

“This is Biden. This isn’t me,” Trump said Friday. “This is Biden’s war.”

... Trump’s blame-Biden refrain perhaps comes up most frequently regarding the economy, where Trump’s numbers have suffered. Trump returned to this line when the stock market sunk amid his tariff threats, when jobs numbers have come in low and when the gross domestic product had a bad quarter....

“This is Biden’s Stock Market, not Trump’s,” he said on Truth Social the same day. “I didn’t take over until January 20th.”

Trump had said just three months prior that a stock market increase at the time was due to the “Trump effect.”
Opps, busted!
... (Polling suggests this has not worked. Apparently because of Trump’s economy-rocking tariff threats, Americans quickly tied the economy to his policies – more quickly than for other recent presidents.)
... One of Trump’s most puzzling efforts to blame Biden came amid one of the biggest scandals of his administration: Signal-gate.

While talking about his officials discussing highly sensitive military attack information on an unclassified messaging app back in March, Trump suggested some blame lie with Biden – for not launching the attack earlier....
:angry-banghead:

Biden did not gut NOAA and the NWS, firing hundreds of the most experienced scientists and managers. Biden was never responsible for emergency preparedness in deep red counties in MAGA Texas.
