If one digs into the issue they will find the military is there to protect government assets intimidate and just present a presence. They are not there for law enforcement.

I was hopping around between some bars late into the night in the areas marked in red on the map a few months ago when I was in DC. It didn't feel anymore unsafe than any city or town in the US that I've been to, and I've been to quite a few. There were plenty of other people out doing the same and having drinks and dinner and enjoying the nightlife.

I'm supposed to doubt my own, real life, experience and believe that I was in fact walking around an area more dangerous than Baghdad? The president is a liar and a coward

Another example of where Trump creates a "problem" out of whole cloth and then puts on a big show to "solve" it while actually accomplishing nothing of value. If one doesn't believe the city's crime numbers, they can check the FBI's numbers. They also show decreasing, not increasing, crime in DC and an overall crime rate not even in the top ten cities. But I suppose when Trump sees that Memphis is actually at the top of the list, he'll send troops there right away. Sure, he will. Has nothing to do with crime and everything to do with show and intimidation.

The only instance I can find of the national guard being deployed due to "crime" (not extraordinary circumstances like riots) was in 1954.

This Republican Governor Has Declined To Send National Guard Troops To D.C.
It's a rare refusal as six Republican-led states have sent their National Guard to Washington in recent days.

Vermont’s Republican Gov. Phil Scott has declined to send the state’s National Guard to Washington, D.C., noting that he didn’t believe it to be a proper use of these troops.

“In the absence of an immediate emergency or disaster that local and regional first responders are unable to handle, the governor just does not support utilizing the guard for this purpose, and does not view the enforcement of domestic law as a proper use of the National Guard,” Scott’s chief of staff Jason Gibbs told Vermont Public on Friday.

Scott’s decision followed a Pentagon request for a “few dozen” of the state’s troops, according to Gibbs, and comes as six Republican-led states, including West Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana, have authorized the deployment of their National Guard to D.C. in the last week.

All told, Trump has already deployed 800 National Guard troops to the city, and the states’ contributions could put that number upwards of 1,700.

... This also isn’t the first time that Scott has pushed back on the Trump administration’s attempts to use the state’s National Guard. Previously, Scott rejected a Defense Department request to utilize Vermont’s National Guard to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at detention facilities.

Most murders are at least somewhat spontaneous, and most potential murderers don't expect to get caught - or in some cases don't care. But if you want to give the "federal presence" credit for collecting and getting hundreds of firearms off the street, find. Oh wait.

Anyway, I thought they weren't there for crime but to "protect federal assets." I guess there are usually a lot of murders in/around the federal assets, eh?

If we repeal the second amendment and have the government confiscate all firearms, we could be even safer. Let's go further and have them ban the sale of fixed blade knives while we're at it. It'll cut down on stabbings.

I bet the media stirs up a lot of hate and division, so let's also get rid of the first amendment while we're at it. Better yet, let's force all citizens to keep recording devices in their homes at all times, allowing government commissars to listen in to ensure no one is planning to commit crimes. That'll nip a lot of crime in the bud.

It's not necessary to be a prosecutor or defence attorney to know the fundamentals about murders. Once you get past bad guys shooting each other (which drives up the numbers), most murder victims are killed by someone they know, most often family members, and in many cases in a fit of drunken rage. Past that, you get "accidents" where some fool waves around a gun that "goes off." Eventually you get to "break-in gone bad" or similar shootings in the act of something else. There is some argument that increased police presence can cut out some gang violence - at least move it, but that takes time - much over 9 days.
