Donald Trump has credited his wife Melania for his recent decision to resupply weapons to Ukraine, a position he had previously opposed.

This isn't the first time that the first lady has appeared to be a "bigger supporter" of Ukraine than the "sceptical" US president, said The Guardian. And some are now claiming that Melania has a greater influence on the Trump presidency than previously thought.

'Unlikely ally'

Her position on the conflict seemed at odds with her husband's when, soon after Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the president described Vladimir Putin as "savvy" and a "genius", but Melania said it was "heartbreaking and horrific" to see "innocent people suffering" and urged her social media followers to donate to the Red Cross.

... . She and her son Barron often speak her native Slovenian. Her father continues to travel back and forth to Slovenia, where the public overwhelmingly supports Ukraine, so she's "kept abreast of European politics".

Kyiv has an "unlikely ally" in the White House with Melania. She reminded her husband of the "deadly toll" of Russian air strikes, helping convince him to sign off on the delivery of Patriot air defence missiles to Kyiv, according to an anecdote Trump told in the Oval Office: "I go home, I tell the first lady, 'I spoke to Vladimir today, we had a wonderful conversation.' And she says, 'Oh really, another city was just hit.'" ...

'Agent Melania'

Melania's support for Ukraine is "not surprising at all" given that the country where she grew up has "no love for Russia", said Mary Jordan, author of "The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump". The first lady also has "more experience" than the current members of the US cabinet in "trying to get her point across" to the president, so might have influenced his change of heart.

Either way, Ukrainians are "celebrating" Melania on social media with memes, said The Guardian, including an image of her wearing a blazer with the Ukrainian Trident insignia, captioned: "Agent Melania Trumpenko"....

But "something feels off about the whole thing", said James Ball in The i Paper. The way Trump "set up and delivered" his anecdote about Melania's latest remarks was a "laugh line" and not "the way someone who was devastated at the loss of life would tell the story".

No one should take his "apparent emotional awakening seriously" because he's "not an empathetic man"; he "just knows how to play one".

Lawmakers vote to name Kennedy Center opera house after Melania Trump

... "This designation is an excellent way to recognize her support and commitment to promoting the arts," said Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, who shepherded the Appropriations Committee's spending bill that funds John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, opposed the change and alleged it's part of giving Trump power to run the Kennedy Center "with very little oversight" from Congress.

... The full House and the Senate would still have to vote on the proposal approved by the Appropriations Committee as part of the spending bill for the interior, environment and other agencies.

But the move reflected support from Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress. The theater would be named the "First Lady Melania Trump Opera House" if the legislations becomes law.

... Lawmakers have already agreed to spend $256.7 million on improvements to the Kennedy Center by 2029, as part of President Donald Trump's legislative priorities. The House subcommittee was voting on $37.2 million in routine annual funding for the center for the year starting Oct. 1.

"The Republicans have now given the president six times the normal amount of money to run the Kennedy Center, carte blanche over who will be on the board, and how different parts of the Kennedy Center − or perhaps the whole Kennedy Center itself− will be named," Pingree said.

... "We'll make it great again," Trump said during a tour in March. "I'm very disappointed when I look around. The bottom line: It has tremendous potential."

The performing arts center was established as a "living memorial" to President John F. Kennedy, though House Republicans have now proposed using the institution to honor Melania as well

Jack Schlossberg is advocating for the Kennedy Center to remain a memorial dedicated solely to his grandfather....

The federal statute that Schlossberg screenshotted states that as of Dec. 2, 1983, "no additional memorials or plaques in the nature of memorials shall be designated or installed in the public areas of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts."

"Plain reading of the statute makes clear — YOU CAN'T DO THAT," Schlossberg, 32, wrote in the caption of his post. On top of the screenshot, the Harvard Law School alum also wrote, "Law prohibits renaming Kennedy Center."

The Kennedy Center was opened as an interactive memorial for the late president, per Public Law 88-260, which explains why no other memorials are permitted within the center....

First lady Melania Trump demanded that Hunter Biden retract comments linking her to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and threatened to sue if he does not.

Trump takes issue with two comments Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, made in an interview this month with American journalist Andrew Callaghan. He alleged that Epstein introduced the first lady to now-President Donald Trump.

The statements are false, defamatory and “extremely salacious,” Melania Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito, wrote in a letter to Biden. Biden's remarks were widely disseminated on social media and reported by media outlets around the world, causing the first lady “to suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm,” he wrote.
