Supes, or any body interested in googling "Safest cities in US". Number 1, to no one's surprise except this who thinks Dem run cities are crime have a, is San Jose, CA. Number 2 might surprise some. It's the city Trump has painted as one of the worst in the world and sent troops in to invade first. Yep - that would be Los Angeles CA. Of course, it's less safe now after the invasion.
Have they burn any cars lately?

Repugs have always taught their people to be afraid. Afraid of Black people, afraid of any furriners, afraid of druggies and heathens. Make 'em afraid of a make believe threat, then solve the threat. Fools follow on.

Trump says National Guard troops heading to Memphis to fight crime

I guess neoplacebo's Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican ally of Trump, is not able to efficiently allocate the resources at his disposal. What a FAILURE. Go figure.
Trump Announced The National Guard Isn't Going To Chicago Anymore. They're Headed To This "Deeply Troubled" Blue City Instead

TACO!!! The combined muscle of Gov JB Pritzker and GoCubsGo backed by his hominys was too much for the lifelong cowardly "bone spurs" Chickenhawk in Chief to face. What a LOSER that he was so unprepared to invade Chicago that he's had to run away after all his threats of invasion. :violin:

Kind of weird, that's the only headline I could find and the article is ambiguous about a withdrawal.

They're not making a lot of noise if they're here, the resistance and shooting a couple of days ago didn't really go their way.

Maybe a quiet withdrawal? They're not declaring victory.

Today there were multiple Mexican Independence Day celebrations planned. Some were canceled but not all.

Hope it's not a headline day.

Pam Bondi says she's coming after those who partake in hate speech, decides first amendment is null and void.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justic ... rcna231633
Asked if the Justice Department would be cracking down on groups that engage in such speech, Bondi said, “We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech, anything — and that’s across the aisle.”

“You can’t have that hate speech in the world in which we live,” she said. "There is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society

...

In an interview later Monday with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Bondi said that "we all believe in the First Amendment," but that people who've said "horrible things" about Kirk in the days since his murder should be held to account.
This sounds like something those on the right claimed Obama would do.

Then she doubled down on separating the privileged "in" group from the "out" group:
Hate speech that crosses the line into threats of violence is NOT protected by the First Amendment. It’s a crime. For far too long, we’ve watched the radical left normalize threats, call for assassinations, and cheer on political violence. That era is over," she said.

"You cannot call for someone’s murder. You cannot swat a Member of Congress. You cannot dox a conservative family and think it will be brushed off as 'free speech.' These acts are punishable crimes, and every single threat will be met with the full force of the law. Free speech protects ideas, debate, even dissent but it does NOT and will NEVER protect violence.

"It is clear this violent rhetoric is designed to silence others from voicing conservative ideals. We will never be silenced. Not for our families, not for our freedoms, and never for Charlie."

Jimmy Kimmel Live!' pulled off air 'indefinitely' by ABC over Charlie Kirk shooting comments
The announcement came after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel and said, "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."

ABC announced on Wednesday that it was pulling Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show off the air “indefinitely” after Brendan Carr, the Federal Communications Commission chair, criticized comments Kimmel made earlier this week about the motives of the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Carr also suggested the FCC could move to revoke ABC affiliate licenses as a way of forcing Disney, the network’s parent company, to punish Kimmel.

The controversy started Monday when Kimmel questioned the ideological leanings ascribed to Kirk’s accused killer, Tyler Robinson, and said the “MAGA gang” — i.e., supporters of President Trump and his “Make America great again” slogan — was trying to “score political points” by calling Robinson a left-wing radical.

If you want a good, albeit terrifying, companion read to current events check out this book:

I Will Bear Witness

https://www.goodreads.com/series/159987 ... ar-witness
The publication of Victor Klemperer's secret diaries brings to light one of the most extraordinary documents of the Nazi period. I Will Bear Witness is a work of literature as well as a revelation of the day-by-day horror of the Nazi years.

A Dresden Jew, a veteran of World War I, a man of letters and historian of great sophistication, Klemperer recognized the danger of Hitler as early as 1933. His diaries, written in secrecy, provide a vivid account of everyday life in Hitler's Germany.

What makes this book so remarkable, aside from its literary distinction, is Klemperer's preoccupation with the thoughts and actions of ordinary Germans: Berger the greengrocer, who was given Klemperer's house ("anti-Hitlerist, but of course pleased at the good exchange"), the fishmonger, the baker, the much-visited dentist. All offer their thoughts and theories on the progress of the war: Will England hold out? Who listens to Goebbels? How much longer will it last?

This symphony of voices is ordered by the brilliant, grumbling Klemperer, struggling to complete his work on eighteenth-century France while documenting the ever- tightening Nazi grip. He loses first his professorship and then his car, his phone, his house, even his typewriter, and is forced to move into a Jews' House (the last step before the camps), put his cat to death (Jews may not own pets), and suffer countless other indignities.

Despite the danger his diaries would pose if discovered, Klemperer sees it as his duty to record events. "I continue to write," he notes in 1941 after a terrifying run-in with the police. "This is my heroics. I want to bear witness, precise witness, until the very end." When a neighbor remarks that, in his isolation, Klemperer will not be able to cover the main events of the war, he writes: "It's not the big things that are important, but the everyday life of tyranny, which may be forgotten. A thousand mosquito bites are worse than a blow on the head. I observe, I note, the mosquito bites
Everyday, mundane, life as seen through the eyes of the average person is oftentimes glossed over by bigger events in history. You'll notice a lot of similar reactions as events unfold as we're experiencing today.

Why it's relevant, aside from the obvious: it documents the day to day process of how the totalitarian state incrementally grows, and the reactions and thoughts of a citizen as it happens.

It's massive: the first volume covering 1933-1941 is 700 something pages. Haven't read the second volume yet. I think the first volume is more relevant at the moment though.

I guess Brendan Carr thinks that Fox News, who was forced to pay the largest ever libel judgement for continual lies about a rigged election, is adhering to the FCC mandate that broadcast license holders must operate "in the public interest" in spite of the massive and continued lying Fox puts out. But Kimmel speculating that the Kirk killer was "one of them" goes too far. I actually cannot believe some of the things that are happening.

Just a reminder. The genesis of this event is Kimmel lied that the shooter was MAGA. All indications are he had moved away from his parents' conservative values. He was hardly MAGA.

Fair enough, although given the various and varied unfounded claims about the shooter, it was hardly a totally ridiculous thought. Anyway, he's entitled to his opinion and the issue isn't what he said or even about Disney's right to close his show. The issue is governmental threats used to stifle dissent. Unprecedented in the US by any other President of any party. Not so unusual in places like Soviet (or current) Russia, China, etc.

I do not like the idea of the government threatening above proper law enforcement. Knowing the history of Disney, they likely read the public and felt Kimmel was inappropriate. Also, they did CBA and found, like Colbert< the contract with Kimmel was too much of a burden for the return.

Sure they did. And the next chapter of spin will be that they had been considering dropping Kimmel for months and it was just a coincidence that they were threatened by the FCC even though Trump has been saying for some time that he was going to send the FCC after anybody who criticizes him.
