If I were a big fan I wouldn't care if he missed a game for the funeral of an old friend. I would care if his old friend was hateful bigot Charlie.
Yeah, it's a dilemma. I won't be 🀒 buying his jersey.

I guess in baseball as in life it's best to stick with lefties. ;)

A funeral for a family member or close friend is personal. A stadium public funeral for an entertainer is fan bait. In regular corporations, Funeral Leave, sometimes called Bereavement Leave is for close family members - sometimes stretched for those who are not technically family but have been in a comparable capacity. It does not cover attending a celebrity funeral. If you want to go, you have to take vacay or other PTO if you have it or go unpaid. When you're a main cog in a team during a critical time, it sure seems irresponsible.

I am somewhat swayed by the fact that they were friends long before Charlie became a celebrity, enough so that Shaw was personally asked to attend by Mrs Charlie. I assume that players get docked a game's pay for things like this, but maybe not.

When I was a prn employee in Brevard I had no PTO. That meant that I had to find my own shift coverage to attend a CA funeral from among that RNs that would not accrue OT because of it. I had to beg.

Meh, Padres could wear Banana suits and not lose any fans over it. The uniforms were maybe more controversial than "polarizing" at first, but just because it was such a difference from anything that could remotely be related to "Padres". Now if they put on Dodger blue...

8 years.
That would have been 2023 when Shaw was a rookie in the minors. I must have made up the "long before Charlie became a celebrity" part  . This makes Shaw look even worse for the hateful bigoted company he keeps.

I cannot remember there ever being so much decided on the last day of the regular season.

With all that, there's no head and shoulders favorite for the World Series.

Oh yeah, sorry Mets.😁

It was a lot.

Your Cubs did their part down the stretch to put the Reds into the Playoffs. :P

I expect trash talk with O Really.

Go baseball:
(5) Padres vs at (4) Cubs

Go:
(6) Tigers > at (3) Guardians
at (4) Yankees > (5) Red Sox
(6) Reds > at (3) Dodgers

You're not very good at trash talk, not even a "Go Padres!" Here are some ideas:
The Cubs always choke.
The umps are biased in favor of the Cubs.

Yeah, I could probably do better if was a team I really didn't like, but although I'm not a card-carrying fan, I've always like the Cubs. It's hard not to be a Padres fan here though - with the coverage they get everywhere you feel like they're neighbors. So "Go Padres" but if they do choke like they've done a lot recently, particularly on the road, I won't cry in my beer.

Great minds . . .
MLB playoffs: What year without superteam means for October

... The New York Mets, after doling out a record $765 million to Juan Soto last winter, went on a 3Β½-month-long crash out that ended with the disgrace of an October spent at home. This season's parity opens the door for the possibility of a wild month ahead. With a chaotic finish to the regular season and without a clear team to beat, the 2025 postseason is a blank canvas, primed for a team to deliver its masterwork. From the upstart Cleveland Guardians, seeking their franchise's first title since 1948, to a Dodgers team still teeming with talent, anyone can win a championship....
Your 2nd favorite team ;) :
THE BEST TEAM in MLB this year plays in the game's smallest market. Its payroll of around $115 million ranks 23rd of 30 teams. A second baseman with an OPS below .800 has been its best player. Not a single one of its everyday players, who combined to score the third-most runs in MLB, made the All-Star team.

"There's nothing super about us," said an executive with the Milwaukee Brewers, and he's right. They're just excellent at recognizing the limitations of their situation -- owner Mark Attanasio has never spent in any sort of significant manner in free agency -- and adapting to overcome them.

... The Brewers can't drop $765 million on Juan Soto; Milwaukee's combined payrolls for the past seven years total less ($759 million)....
:o
In this year's field, every team comes with warts -- and, funny enough, they're what make the 2025 postseason so attractive. Watching teams in real time excise their ugliness is captivating, and as much as having a superteam in the field would provide an instant villain, sure, the postseason doesn't need anything manufactured. Its organic self is plenty compelling.

Not the best seats. Upper deck 5th row left field. About halfway between the dugout and outfield wall. Good foul ball possibilities though.
