A British woman who was detained by Iran has told the BBC it was hard to remain positive in prison, hours before she and her husband were sentenced to 10 years for espionage.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman were arrested while passing through Iran on a round-the-world motorcycle trip in January 2025.
The Foremans had been heading for Australia on their trip of a lifetime, crossing into Iran from Armenia on 30 December 2024 and had planned to arrive in Pakistan by 4 January that year.
But on 3 January, the couple were detained despite having Iranian visas, a guide and an approved itinerary.

Some years ago two or three Americans on some kind of hike were detained in Iran. Don't remember what happened on that. I think they were released after a short time.

I THINK it was a pretty long time, and it involved the release of impounded Iranian money. I suspect it was a calculated risk for the Britons, one that many from the UK navigated successfully.
Did you ever wonder what you'd have done during the rise of fascism? You're doing it right now.

I don't recall any of the details of it; just that I think there were three people, one a woman, who somehow ended up in Iran. I don't know what's with these fools....Iran is not on any list of places I want to go to.
Abdellatif Hafraoui, of Bayonne, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Newark Liberty International Airport last August as he and his wife, Sandra Hafraoui, were heading to Florida on vacation. Over the course of 108 days, the 60-year-old said, he was moved from New Jersey’s Delaney Hall Detention Facility to Louisiana and later Arizona before being released on $15,000 bond.

In an interview with NJ.com, Sandra Hafraoui said she voted for Trump in the past three elections, and that she and Abdellatif Hafraoui attended one of the president’s rallies in Las Vegas.
She believed the president would focus on deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records and not people like her husband, who moved to the U.S. from Morocco at age 22 and has lived stateside for 38 years.

According to Abdellatif Hafraoui, he was targeted by ICE because of a missed immigration court date over a decade ago, prior to his marriage to Sandra Hafraoui. At the time, he’d hired New York attorney Earl Seth David to file naturalization paperwork on his behalf.

Since his Nov. 26 release, Abdellatif Hafraoui has been unable to return to his job as a concierge at a New York residential building. He must also attend regular ICE check-ins and wear an electronic ankle bracelet.
“I would like to go back to work, to feel normal again,” he told NJ.com. “To have my life back without all this fear and uncertainty.”
Prayers to Trump: "Prayers TO Trump," NOT "Prayers FOR Trump." Documenting people begging Trump for personal intercession in their day-to-day lives, and plead for policy changes. At times funny, tragic, or insane.
