The Dog Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Walking where wild canines roam has saved me thousands in therapy. More great CAnine news for CA:
Trail camera captures footage of 'one of the rarest carnivores on the planet' for first time in decades: 'Extremely difficult to find'

Not since the heydays of doo-wop and Elvis had the Sierra Nevada red fox been spotted in the Lake Tahoe Basin. That is, until now.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife released trail footage on its Facebook page of the distinctive red and bushy tailed animal from Nov. 13....

The Sierra Nevada red fox, one of the rarest carnivores on the planet, has been detected in the Lake Tahoe Basin for the first time since the mid-1900s. A singular Sierra Nevada red fox turned up on trail camera video on the morning of Nov. 13, 2025, in the Blackwood Canyon area of Placer County on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. Once thought to have been extirpated from the mountain range, Sierra Nevada red fox were first detected in the central Sierra Nevada near Sonora Pass in 2010. In recent years, the elusive, high-elevation residents have been detected much farther north – near Donner Lake and the headwaters of the North Fork American River – exciting and encouraging developments say CDFW scientists, who believe the extremely limited population may be growing and expanding.

Due to their rarity, Sierra Nevada red fox in California are listed as Threatened under the California Endangered Species Act. The population in the Sierra Nevada has additional federal protection as Endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The trail camera capturing the latest detection was situated at 7,000 feet elevation on National Forest land within the U.S. Forest Service - Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The camera is part of the Tahoe Basin Wildlife Connectivity Study being funded by the California Tahoe Conservancy and conducted by the Wildlands Network with data collection by Pathways for Wildlife and in partnership with CDFW.
