Re: 2026 Elections
About an hour ago I was watching the special session of the TN state legislature; the governor called a special session after the recent Supreme Court ruling gutting the VRA again. Anyway, Stacy Abrams was there testifying and explaining why redistricting mid decade and this close to a nationwide election is a bad idea. After she spoke, giving examples of what she's seen in GA, some of the Democrat state senators began asking the new map bill's sponsor questions about the new map. The new map divides Memphis into three separate districts (it's been in one district for about a hundred years). Anyway, the Republican sponsor of the bill admitted he and his co sponsor had drawn the maps, but he was unable to answer ANY of the yes/no questions being asked of him. He only repeated the statement that the new maps "are intended to ensure Republicans maintain control of the US House of Representatives." He gave the same answer to this question: "do you know that the new map divides Memphis into three different districts?" He repeated his lilne. At one point he read a lenghty written statement about how CA and VA had recently drawn new maps but he failed to mention at all that those things only happened because of trump telling TX Republicans to start this shit. The more I watched the stuff, the more I began exhibiting symptoms of trembling rage and fits of loud and foul exclamations of the worst kind. Oh, they held a voice vote and the new maps passed. And I found out that my representatives' son is in the state Senate; I couldn't remember if he (Harshbarger) was in the House or Senate. He voted "aye."

Yeah, I got so mad I had to turn the damn thing off. And it's gone on to the House and been passed. I turned it off during the Senate voice vote because I knew how it would end up. The goal is to make it so that the trump team never loses an election. Homey don't play that.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2026 9:36 amneoplacebo wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2026 8:49 amA story about the legislative session I watched part of yesterday.

Let's hope some voters also don't play that. Some good news:neoplacebo wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2026 4:08 pmYeah, I got so mad I had to turn the damn thing off. I'm in the 1st district, so I'm about as far from Memphis as one can get and still be in TN. But if I did live in Memphis, I'd be mad as hell over this. It was bad enough just seeing part of it on tv. shitVrede too wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2026 7:18 pmLet's hope some voters also don't play that. It's a frustration for the entire country, especially now that the VA SC struck down their 4-vote gerrymander referendum. I believe the tally in this war DonOLD started (yep, another one) was 10-10, but is now 10-6 GQP.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2026 8:57 amI'm in the 1st district, so I'm about as far from Memphis as one can get and still be in TN. Re: 2026 Elections
Not only that, but as far as I know, none of the Republican run states put this to the voters likle CA and VA did. The VA ruling is being appealied. Pretty shitty that something the voters voted for is ruled invalid, but a state legislature can do the same thing on its own and get away with it. Hell, I'm not a lawyer, but I'd challenge all those other states just on that point. Just think of it....suddenly rotten cabbage is declared non offensive by Republican state legislatures and thrust on the public. Meanwhile, rotten cabbage was voted down in another state, but the state Supreme Court declared that it has to be non offensive rotten cabbage anyway. shit sticksVrede too wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2026 3:27 pmIt's a frustration for the entire country, especially now that the VA SC struck down their 4-vote gerrymander referendum. Re: 2026 Elections
While Florida now restricts official documents to English, and creates more hoops for potential voters to jump through, I offer in contrast a stroll through the California Primary Election Guide:
All registered voters (and yes, everybody has to be verified) gets a ballot through the mail. If you didn't get one, you can go to several locations for a replacement. Each ballot is bar-coded individually and traceable.
Unlike Florida, the voter guide is in 16 languages, some of which I have no idea what are.
You can turn in your ballot via US Mail (officially not recommended) or deposit in one of 150 or so sealed collection boxes throughout the county, located in places like libraries, selected retail areas, community/civic centers, schools, parks, senior centers, etc.
Or you can wait and vote in person at any one of the 250 or so Vote Centers.
The drop boxes are open from May 5 through election day June 2; some Vote Centers open May 23-June 2, the rest May 30-June2.
And with all that, total turnout in the 2024 Presidential* election was about 60%. I hate to see what the turnout numbers will be in the states making voting more difficult.
