Kentucky students to first lady Michelle Obama: Your food ‘tastes like vomit’..
Students in a rural Kentucky county — and their parents — are the latest to join a growing national chorus of scorn for the healthy school
lunches touted by first lady Michelle Obama.

“They say it tastes like vomit,” said Harlan County Public Schools board member Myra Mosley at a contentious board meeting last week,
reports The Harlan Daily Enterprise.

The growing body of USDA meal regulations implemented by the Department of Agriculture under the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010″
has long been a signature issue for the first lady.

Denizens of Harlan County don’t much care, though. Their primary concern at the board meeting was a bevy of complaints that local children
are starving at lunch — and for the remainder of the school day — because the food on offer in the cafeteria is crappy and there isn’t nearly enough of it.

“Kids can’t learn when they’re hungry!” parents shouted to the board, according to the Enterprise.

Other gripes involved the new bread, which students don’t want to eat because it’s brown wheat bread, and the new milk,
which is skim or one percent fat, not two percent or whole. The cafeteria’s chocolate- and strawberry-flavored milk offerings are now nonfat.

Jack Miniard, the school district’s director of school and community nutrition, was on hand to explain that the federal government
now governs both food choices and portion sizes in most American school districts including Harlan County
.

Under the National School Lunch Program, Under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, participating schools must provide lunches —
including free or reduced price lunches — with minimum amounts of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and whole grains. Also, in what presumably
falls outside the hunger-free aspect of the act, there’s a calorie cap: 850 for high school lunches, 700 for middle schools and a mere 650
calories for kids in elementary school.

Students can only have one serving of meat or other protein. However, rich kids can buy a second portion each day on their own dime.

Servings of carbohydrates such as potatoes are limited to just a single serving of three-fourths of a cup per student.

On the plus side, students can eat as many fruits and vegetables as they want.

Across the country, students and parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government’s new food regime.
Some wealthier suburban school districts are simply backing out of the National School Lunch Program,
though doing so can mean giving up a six-figure annual subsidy for the district.
So much for pinto beans and cornbread......

Can't they just bring their own lunch? If they can't, then I have a problem with it.

The only thing I remember being actually good was the rolls they made at my high school. Most of the rest of that stuff didn't appeal to me other than the apples and oranges; it was obviously industrial food, which is rarely good, and as far as I know, never forced upon you. Except at Guantanamo.

The feds don't "dictate" what can be served - except in instances where they're paying for it. Don't take federal money, keep feeding them boxed creamed potatoes and grease gravy. That is easier to eat when you have either "Dew mouth" or "Meth mouth" anyway,

C'mon that joke
has whiskers.

So they eat a lot of vomit in Kentucky? Better than paying the bill later when their
eating habits likely lead to bad and expensive health outcomes.

This would be the Harlan County, KY, that has a 30-something percent poverty rate, an average family income about half the Kentucky average, 30% obesity rate, 40% with less than high school education, and where 80% voted Republican in 2012? Is that the one? Well, I guess that's a good place to pick for an evaluation of school cafeteria food, particularly the part about the awful brown wheat bread and the "vomit" taste. Yeppers, they be the authority fershure.

Interesting article here about those kids that won't eat brown bread...(not directly, but still...)
http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=6865077
"Children of the Mountains Struggle to Survive"
"Central Appalachia has up to three times the national poverty rate, an epidemic of prescription drug abuse, the shortest life span in the nation, toothlessness, cancer and chronic depression."

Utah would not have popped into mind after the term 'prescription drug abuse" but then "Utah" rarely pops to mind in any case. But apparently they have an issue: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8655 ... tml?pg=all

Maybe I've missed something somewhere....what office does MO hold that she can dictate what school children must eat?"
"You did not name or link your source. Hmmm . . .
"starving at lunch" suggests it's a hinky one."
Yep....Yahoo! News....hinky as they come.

"Michelle is not responsible for poor preparation, healthy food can be very tasty. We've both had all-natural guacamole that's excellent and "Vomit" pretending to be guacamole." ;)
It did look rather atrocious, didn't it? If I closed my eyes, I could eat it!

"The feds are not responsible for palates used to crappy food but they do have a duty to not serve unhealthy stuff.
If some kids can't hack it their parents can pack lunches for them, as bannination says. Your "dictating what we're to eat" is sheer wingnuttery."
I can remember when "real food" was served in the lunchroom; i.e., potatoes, beef, green beans, rolls or biscuits,
baked spaghetti, (yummy!) whole milk, occasionally a piece of cake or fruit pie.......later on that fare turned to tacos, pizza, roll-ups, 2% milk (98% water) cookies...etc.

"However, if you're dead set on creating more sick, fat kids with diabetes and poor teeth, and on tax, rate and premium payers footing the bills for their subsequent medical issues, I encourage you to swing by McD's and KrsipyKreme every day and hand out goodies just off school property. Better to light a candle . . ."
Kids ain't getting obese from what they eat at school.....they come home, jump on the computer or ball up on the couch or bed with their
smart phone while munching cold pizza, colas, doughnuts, McD's or whatever. I've never seen so many young girls with muffin tops.

I knew "what" guacamole you meant.....they still make it; on Fri, Sat, & Sun. only. I buy some every now and then.
I don't think it tastes as good as mine did though.....blow up dolls not withstanding!

You got a hangup for muffin-tops on young girls? A "young girl" to me starts at around 39ish.

Seriously though, beside poor eating habits, I believe a large contributor to muffin tops are the low-rise, tight jeans that many of the young women
are wearing today. The back pockets are below their butt-cheeks and the waist is much lower than conventional jeans, which makes the belly fat,
that used to be held in check by a normal beltline, flop over the top of the beltline.....

there are still some schools that make meals for kids, but increasingly for the past 20 or so years schools have turned the cafeteria workers into the end of an assembly line that started in a far off factory, or worse, a row of vending machines. But, so it goes with privatization of everything – on the one hand you could hire trained cooks and dieticians at decent wages to serve decent meals to kids, but where is the profit in that. Alternatively, you could hire minimum wage workers to assemble and heat factory made food; the superintendent brags about saving county money on salaries, while his brother in-law gets the contract to buy the factory made food from a thousand miles away, now we be talking capitalism the merican way.
I appreciate Michelle, or anyone else who makes some attempt to pay attention to the junk that is being served in schools.
The biggest crop in Santa Rosa county Fla. is peanuts, but the Santa Rosa county school system buys pre-made peanut butter sandwiches (white bread with the evil crust removed) from a factory of nose pickers in Chicago. The factory probably buys their peanuts from Santa Rosa county or maybe from the guy lil bush appointed to head up the peanut safety program, who was selling rat shit infested peanuts to school systems – I think some kids died – I know a lot got sick

Yeah your palate definitely changes once you become accustomed to a different diet. a while back my fiancee decided to stop eating beef and pork, now she's a straight up vegetarian. I did the same not because I feel bad for the animals, but because its easier to cook a single meal (I still eat poultry and fish every now and again). If I do eat beef or pork now I always feel physically gross and it just doesn't taste as good as it used to (but damn I still do like some BBQ). I guess what I'm getting at is once you've changed your diet for the better or worse, your taste buds seem to adjust and you eventually come to prefer that diet.
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.

So children in a dirt poor appalachian town think their taxpayer subsidized free lunch "tastes like vomit" because it's healthy, and Mr.B sides with the children. Hope no one had the poor luck of being raised by him.

Jabbing at me and the "children in a dirt poor appalachian (sic) town" is the best you can do?

Yes, I side with the children....school kids across the country (in all degrees of wealth) are turning up their noses at the tasteless fare being offered in lunchrooms; not only because it's tasteless, but portions are too small.

This story is blowing up in the news with school districts across the country opting to drop federally subsidized funding; one, because the kids don't like the food, secondly; the schools are losing money because the kids aren't eating it, the gummit ain't paying enough in subsidies to begin with, and thirdly; their losses in un-purchased meals is running into the tens of thousands.

Agreeing in part with Banni's comment on "Can't they just bring their own lunch?".... some can, some can't.....some can't because they're poor, some can't because their parent(s) had rather free-load off the system, some won't because it would be beneath their dignity to be seen bringing their lunch.

BTW...who's ever heard of "healthy" food tasting good anyhow?

I have. There are plenty of ways you can inexpensively prepare meals in a healthy manner that taste great. Plus you feel much better when eating more healthy.

Don't know how tenable it is to do this with school lunches though.
