Interrogate means "question." That is ALL it means.

It is often used for FORMAL questioning, but a party girl can interrogate her bff on where she partied last night.

The reason "interrogate" is often (but not ALWAYS) used to identify FORMAL questioning, dates back to the Norman Occupation - as does "acquiring" property rather than "getting" it. The groundlings adopted the Norman terms for important stuff (like "acquiring" property), and used the mundane "get" for the informal stuff - like "getting" the money to "acquire" property.

Likewise, there is a TENDENCY to use interrogate more often in a formal sense. But literate people often assume literacy in their antagonists, a mistake that I clearly made with you, sir.
