Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Good discussion here - from a (literate) gun dealer's perspective... http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/c ... picks=true

One of the problems with "stand your ground" is that it changes a long-standing fundamental principle of self-defense. SYG says that a person has no duty to retreat when attacked before using lethal force. But the basis of self-defense has historically been that one "had no choice" but to shoot/stab/run over, whatever. So if it's OK to respond with lethal force without even making any effort to escape the attack, we've changed the parameters from self-defence to retaliation. Big difference.

According to investigators, no one was allowed in Adam Lanza's room, including Nancy Lanza...
The shooter disliked birthdays, Christmas and holidays. He would not allow his mother to put up a Christmas tree. The mother explained it by saying that shooter had no emotions or feelings...

If it was rap instead, we'd be blaming it.
I think mom is blatantly negligent. Hell, I wouldn't put up with that trash bags on the windows nor the only communicate by email gigs for a second. Much less buy guns for the kid. I suspect she was a wingnut. She should have marched that kid straight down to the local Thorazine clinic several years ago.

Chicago on pace for fewest murders since 1965. All because they did away with all their gun laws and let everybody carry guns all over town to bars and parks. Oh wait.

Meanwhile, here on the homefront....in Asheville anyway, I read in yesterday's Asheville Citizen Times that a local group of gun "enthusiasts" plan to make sure the city changes its current signs banning weapons in parks and also to make sure the city complies with the new gun law. And I presume these "enthusiasts" will be enthusiastically and legally armed whilst they carry out their mission.

More Guns Less Crime

At least according to congress (not necessarily a reliable source)

Well, it is the Congressional Research Service data, which is generally reliable, but the article wasn't written by them. It showed no causal relationship, largely because the places where all the guns were bought wasn't necessarily the places that were bringing down the violent crime. I'd be impressed if the writer picked a place, say, New York City, and compared the number of guns and the crime rate over 10 years. Opps. OK,maybe not NYC, try Denver. Opps. Chicago? Nope. San Francisco? Uh Oh. Texas, statewide...maybe. I think if we found the original research, we'd find that the paranoids buying up all the guns don't generally live in the urban places where the crime rate is and always has been higher than in rural areas.

Yes, I know you were mainly yanking his chain. Yes, I know it's mostly a joke. But there are people who think there really are "free clinics" where people can get medical treatment.

The ABCCM Medical ministry is Asheville and Buncombe County's only free clinic which is staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, dentists, hygienists, and pharmacists. The Ministry offers health care services to the uninsured and underinsured of Buncombe County. The Medical Ministry serves individuals who have no private insurance, are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, and who meet designated income guidelines. We offer the following services at our clinic: Primary Medical Care, Dental Care, Licensed Pharmacy and Medication Assistance Program. Ummm, no mental or psychological or psychiatric care. Overworked, understaffed, and the only one in the county.

Come on, O....do you have to throw a monkey-wrench into every thing?
Ommy knew I wasn't serious where about where he could seek free help.
