The fight over same-sex marriage is essentially over in the US. The hold-out states are simply becoming irrelevant.
It's already official that for federal employees it doesn't matter if you live in a hold-out state. If you were legally married in a pro-civil rights state, you still get marriage benefits and protections. This is also the route that national corporations are taking.
Nor can the federal government, military and major corporations take away marriage benefits when they transfer someone to a hold-out state. Their marriage benefits will be the same even in those states. Any attempt to block this will force REAL money and legal muscle into the battle.
With the number of Americans who support same-sex marriage over 50% and increasing - and far over 50% for younger voters, the Republican Party can see the writing on the wall. Dick Cheney and other prominent Republicans already endorse same-sex marriage. Once the Cruz/Santorum/etc. clown car burns itself out in 2016, the Republican Party will become the civil rights party that supports same-sex marriage, And Always Has.
As for Australia, they've had
plenty of polls on the issue over the last decade. Support for same-sex marriage has been slowly but steadily climbing, now at 65%-72% depending on the poll. With over 75% of the population wanting a referendum on the issue. Expect that referendum to be announced any time now.
Hope This Helps!
