Re: The homophobic thread :>
I saw an interesting comment today regarding the refusal to make cakes (or whatever) for homosexual couples because of "religious reasons." The point was made that the cake-makers may think the couples are sinners, maybe doomed to Hell, but don't they likely make cake for sinners every day? If the only difference is that they know (or believe) the gay couple to be sinners and they don't know what abominations the straight couple has done and they don't ask? Shouldn't the cake-maker hand out a lengthy questionnaire to make sure anyone receiving their cake is truly worthy and without sin? If they don't turn down everybody who has sinned, aren't they complicit in the sin by their failure to do due diligence?

Yeah, I thought the whole idea of Christianity is to believe in the concept of original sin (being born a sinner right off the bat) and the acceptance of the fact that you'll always be a sinner striving not to be one. It's really a no win situation, and is, in fact, the reason for the old saying "damned if you do and damned if you don't." This is precisely why I sin with enthusiasm and generally think nothing of it.Boatrocker wrote:There's not a single religious argument built on logic; they're all built on superstition and bullshit.O Really wrote:I saw an interesting comment today regarding the refusal to make cakes (or whatever) for homosexual couples because of "religious reasons." I certainly couldn't agree with this.neoplacebo wrote:This is precisely why I sin with enthusiasm and generally think nothing of it.
Granted, I define sin as "harmful to others", rather than "opposed by one of countless contradicting interpretations of ancient mythology."

Sin is definitely contagious and habit-forming.
I believe that's where the sayings "monkey see, monkey do", or "follow the leader" originated.![]()

This explains why most sects of Christianity and other religions insist that you have leaders - priests, bishops, etc. - placed between you and God to tell you how to worship. "Sin" is a limited concept word that has no real meaning outside of religion "Evil" on the other hand, I find a bit more universal.rstrong wrote:I certainly couldn't agree with this.neoplacebo wrote:This is precisely why I sin with enthusiasm and generally think nothing of it.

OK...It's just that I've not seen it put like that before.

God is no respecter of persons; therefore the ground is level at the foot of the cross. No man, woman, or child, regardless of their station in life or how much money they have, is any more important than anyone else.
There is no leadership hierarchy in our church; no one tells me or anyone else when, how, or what to worship. What each of us choose to believe or disbelieve is entirely up to the individual.
In my denomination of worship, (Independent Baptist) we shun any notion of a priest, bishop, cardinal, pope, etc.
There is only one to be referred to as Father (religiously speaking). We believe in being saved from our sins by confessing them publicly; not behind a curtain in a closet. Asking a priest (or Father) to forgive us of our sins is ludicrous. Asking him repeatedly, week after week in a confessional where you have to "pay the piper" is blasphemous. Salvation can not be bought or earned by doing anything special for someone else ; it can not be given to you nor can it be taken from you once you have truly earned it.
"Jesus saith unto him, (Thomas) I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

That's the way of the world as well. No one really wants to acknowledge sin; rather preferring to white-wash it, sugar-coat it, then turn your back and pretend it's not there.O Really wrote: "Sin" is a limited concept word that has no real meaning outside of religion "Evil" on the other hand, I find a bit more universal."

Christians have a magic get out of jail card. No matter how bad they fuck up, they can ask for forgiveness and join their best friend Jesus. Even Hitler can be playing softball with imaginary Jesus and his imaginary father in imaginary heaven. Or is it 72 imaginary virgins? Depends where you were born I guess. And how brainwashed.

I've been to Backwoods, VA. It's not a nice place. Natural Tunnel state park, however, and the countryside immediately around it, which is close to the Kentucky line and not far from a Cumberland Trail access is very nice. And if you stayed there and along US 421, you'd have no idea how close you are to hard core Appalachia. Definitely close enough to hear the banjos. No, it means that I don't believe in the devil and that humans are responsibleMr.B wrote:
I guess this means you don't read or listen to daily news reports..?
for their actions, the good and the bad. I'm glad that our judicial system
doesn't hold with the devil either. Every other criminal would maintain that
the devil caused his actions and that the devil, being so cunning and powerful,
the criminal was not able to overcome that power, so he is not completely
responsible for his criminal acts. If the devil were real, that would be a
legitimate defense. Fortunately, the courts do not agree.

Too bad you don't have an imagination; you must lead a pretty dull life.Sometime Lefty wrote: "Christians have a magic get out of jail card. Tell you what...you can have the virgins to create your own imagination(s).
