Re: Education thread
Saw that, you should have read down to where Richard Dawkins backtracks. It makes no difference to the travesty that occurred whether it was an "invention" or a construction, it's dumb for Dawkins to whine over a word choice by a science-oriented 14 year old. Plus, he's not getting invites and gifts because of what he called what he made, but rather for what was done to him after he made something.

Re: Education thread
Yeah, he may have mis-used the term "invent" but clearly it was something he built. As to the "fraud" part, I suppose he could have come up with some elaborate scheme to get tossed into jail and collect attention from all over the country, but it seems a loooooon stretch. More likely this clock was just a test run. It attracts attention, and the next time he takes a clock to school nobody notices until it goes boom.

Re: Education thread
It's way sad for the kids but Texas Christians sure are funny.Texas case mulls if home-school kids have to learn something
Laura McIntyre began educating her nine children more than a decade ago inside a vacant office at an El Paso motorcycle dealership she ran with her husband and other relatives.
Now the family is embroiled in a legal battle the Texas Supreme Court hears next week that could have broad implications on the nation's booming home-school ranks. The McIntyres are accused of failing to teach their children educational basics because they were waiting to be transported to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ....
But problems began when the dealership's co-owner and Michael's twin brother, Tracy, reported never seeing the children reading, working on math, using computers or doing much of anything educational except singing and playing instruments. He said he heard one of them say learning was unnecessary since "they were going to be raptured."
Then, the family's eldest daughter, 17-year-old Tori, ran away from home saying she wanted to return to school. She was placed in ninth grade, since officials weren't sure she could handle higher-level work....

You should have seen what MS headlines looked like before the literacy program.
I worked in a hospital that had a standard form to document med problems and errors. One of the checkoff boxes was "Order Ilegible".

ADHD Diagnoses Soar 43 Percent in United States
There are lots of possible reasons, including diet, pollutants, electronics, etc., but I gotta wonder how much of it is due to financially strapped schools de-emphasizing the things kids naturally do - play, exercise, build, create, do art and music, and so on. Maybe some of the problem is desk bound, test oriented regimentation.

2 dozen public schools in Virginia closed after a (Arabic calligraphy) homework assignment drew fury from parents
Pretty shaky faith if it can be harmed by a single calligraphy assignment. Why do Christians think their religion is so utterly weak?
"Some communications posed a risk of harm to school officials" - Ah, look who the terrorists are.

Re: Education thread
I thought the whoop-de-doo was pretty excessive at first - thinking the assignment as non-sectarian. However, on further review, it was not the best choice of content for the "calligraphy" exercise. The calligraphy translated to, "There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah," according to CNN. Probably would have raised a flap among some (but maybe not closed the schools) if they had all been required to write something Christian.

Re: Education thread
Saying, "This is what Muslims believe and write," is different from saying, "This is what a student should believe." I studied plenty of religion in public and private grade school, especially Christianity, but don't recall ever feeling that faith was being pushed on me.

This is not about parents that are upset about any religion being discussed in school, it's about Islamophobia.

Re: Education thread
I'm not surprised. NC schools have such low pay that teachers are leaving left and right. I better qualify that for right wingers.... their pay is not competitive to what they could make in other states.stephenpe wrote:Hello fellas, Taught in Fla public schools for 37 years (still do). We havent had raise in 7 years or more. Our insurance rates have gone insane while coverage has gone to hell. Our state raised our retirement contribution by 3% so we have basically had a 7-10% pay cut over the last 7 years,.......billy.pilgrim wrote:fla teachers have had it rough in several counties over the years

Dont ask me about all the BS they have started giving teachers to do..............data collection assessments out the wazzooo and testing insanity, They used to have normal amounts of paper to push,,,,,,,,,now it is like what ESE teachers push but for WAY more kids...........here is one of the big reasons I teach (and love it I may add)....
Thursday my 2nd grade came to PE. I have a tiny little boy who is probably Aspergers with super high IQ. He doesnt do much in PE. I taught his mom. One day after calling him Jake from State Farm (he is name jake) He told me it was not nice.......so I apologized and quit. Last month he FINALLY got into something active (jumping rope) He works hard at it and its a work in progress.........Welllllll Thursday he came over and wanted to throw the football with some boys........This was monumental.......he is not social or likes sports so I was really excited. I showed him how to throw and left him with the boys figuring it would end not so good. Welllll I turned around 5 minutes later and one of my big knucklehead boys (he gets in trouble a lot) was PATIENTLY and carefully teach Jake how to throw. Putting his hands on the ball and working hard to help Jake. OMG I was so happy.......I took the helper to the office (where she sees him in a bad light often) to brag on him. He was pleased and the principal was very happy. This was my best present in a long time...........Sometimes something amazing hits you in the face and you rejoice for the human race, children and the spirit of kindness.......
