Tree Hugger Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Obama declares emergency in Michigan over bad water - White House

Flint has lots of problems and there's plenty of blame to go around - Dem, GOP, corporate greed, "free" trade, economics, etc., but the guy who poisoned tens of thousands of Dems and Republicans, adults and children, is Michael Brown, the emergency manager appointed by GOP Governor Rick Snyder.

That was also the days when auto workers made wages most people could only dream of.... and STILL went on strike. In one memorable case when a union official was asked what the issues were that led to a strike against one of the Big 3, the response was "nothing; it was simply their turn."

*Some* of those jobs went to Mexico. Most went to the non-unionized southern US states.

And not to be confused with Michael "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" Brown.

The petition to the Justice Department reads:

"Conduct a thorough, tough, and transparent investigation into the poisoning of Flint, Michigan’s water supply that reaches all the way to Gov. Rick Snyder and holds him accountable for his role in creating and perpetuating this crisis."

They need to find the people driving these refuse trucks full of plastic and stop them from dumping their loads into the oceans.

News broke that Michigan Governor Rick Snyder knew that Flint's water was poisoned for at least a year. He even had bottled water shipped in for state employees, while ignoring the concerns of worried Flint residents--who are largely poor, Black, and without other options.

It's possibly the most shocking revelation since the Flint water crisis began, and it's downright criminal. Now, more than ten thousand children and pregnant women have been exposed to toxic lead levels--that means severe brain, nervous system, and liver damage that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Flint residents are calling on Governor Snyder to resign, and now he might be forced to--if enough of us join their call.

Tell Michigan Governor Rick Snyder:

You knowingly let Flint families drink poisoned water. Resign.

Don't let Rick Snyder off the hook!

Image

Congress held a hearing on Flint's water crisis. Witnesses from Flint brought tainted, brown water and clumps of their hair that fell out because of lead poisoning. It was heartbreaking.

But the man responsible for the public health emergency, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, wasn't there. That's because the Republican-led committee let him off the hook, leaving Flint families with no accountability for the thousands of children who were poisoned because of his administration's actions.

Now, House Democrats are requesting Governor Snyder testify NEXT Wednesday. We can make sure he doesn't skip the hearing and quietly avoid accountability if we demand he stand before Congress. Can you sign?

Tell Governor Rick Snyder:

Face up to poisoning Flint's families and children. Testify in front of Congress.

Y'know that massive methane leak in California that leaked the equivalent of an additional 505,000 cars on the road for a year and forced the evacuation of 2000 nearby residents?

THEY'VE FINALLY ARRESTED THOSE RESPONSIBLE

...for protesting the lax regulatory environment that enabled the spill by draping banners on the headquarters of the California Public Utilities Commission.

The leaking well had not been inspected since 1976. The CEO of SoCalGas reported to the LA Weekly that a safety valve on the well had been removed in 1979.

We should see similar arrests in the Flint, Michigan water poisoning any time now.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on Senator Orrin Hatch's amendment to S. 2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015. I appreciate hearing from you.

If enacted, this amendment would prohibit the Secretary of the Interior from suspending coal leasing on federal land unless Congress approves this action. This amendment has not yet been called up for a vote.

I support an all-of-the-above energy strategy. We need to pursue policies that will provide Americans with energy security and lower utility bills. Coal accounts for a substantial amount of energy production and arbitrarily suspending coal leasing will not only damage our ability to meet the country's energy demands, but also increase cost for consumers. Americans have struggled enough under the president's economic recklessness, and they can't afford another hit to their family budgets....

Sincerely,
Thom Tillis
U.S. Senator (R-NC)
Tillis needs staffers that understand "arbitrarily", "cost", "recklessness" and "budgets".

From UltraViolet:
Gov. Snyder is testifying!

You and more than 33,000 UltraViolet members stood up with allies and Flint families. As a result, Governor Rick Snyder has FINALLY agreed to testify before Congress for knowingly poisoning Flint's water.

This is a HUGE step in securing justice for Flint--but the fight isn't over just yet. Flint's families are still at the mercy of Gov. Snyder's administration, which hasn't done nearly enough to decontaminate the water system or offer medical and financial aid to thousands of families who were exposed to lead-poisoned water.

These are some of the things UltraViolet members have done to keep Gov. Snyder accountable:

1. UltraViolet members donated over $10,000 to organizations serving and advocating for the residents of Flint, including the Genesee County Hispanic Latino Labor Collaborative and the Flint People's Recovery Fund.

2. Along with our friends at MoveOn.org and Democracy For America, Ultraviolet members delivered nearly 1 million signatures to Gov. Snyder's office in Lansing.

3. For poisoning Flint's waters, Gov. Snyder got a dirty water ice sculpture surprise in front of his office.

4. UltraViolet flew a plane banner that read "Snyder poisoned kids in Flint" above the big Michigan vs. Michigan State game in Ann Arbor, where Snyder lives.

Thanks for all you do. Together, we are going to keep the pressure on Snyder and make sure people in Flint get the justice they deserve.

VICTORY!

Image
Obama Administration Will Not Open Atlantic Coast to Drilling

... due to record-low oil prices and strong local opposition, it said on Tuesday....

The proposal would have opened up drilling sites more than 50 miles off Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia to oil drilling by 2021.

Coastal communities in these states protested the administration's 2015 plan, fearing the possibility of a local oil spill, like the BP Horizon accident in 2010 on the U.S. Gulf Coast, and its effects on tourism and their economies.

"With this decision coastal communities have won a 'David vs. Goliath' fight against the richest companies on the planet, and that is a cause for tremendous optimism for the well-being of future generations," said Jacqueline Savitz, environmental group Oceana's vice president for U.S. oceans....
