The LEO thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Police Record Themselves Conspiring to Retaliate Against Protester

On September 11, 2015, Connecticut resident Michael Picard was filming a protest near a police DUI checkpoint in West Hartford. Unbeknownst to the troopers who confiscated his camera, it was rolling while they appeared to fabricate criminal charges against him. The ACLU of Connecticut sued the police officers for violating Picard’s rights.
Dumb cops, slam dunk.

Knew his rights. Got tased anyway.

Techdirt: Before Forfeiture Is Finalized, Sheriff Racks Up 54k Miles On Seized Vehicle, Sells It To Private Buyer
Not satisfied with cleaning out the farmhouse the Ostipow's son resided in (as well as every building surrounding it), the deputies returned with another warrant and cleaned out the Ostipow's house -- one located a half-mile away from the supposed grow operation. They found no illegal evidence, but that didn't stop them from taking plenty of their property, including the cash in Gerald Ostipow's wallet.
Then they just kept coming.
In the weeks that followed, deputies from the Saginaw County Sheriff's Office would arrive, off duty, in their personal vehicles and would continue to take more items long after the completion of the execution of the search warrants. No inventory tabulation exists for these items taken and there appears to be no records of these "self-help" items being officially sold.
The proceedings -- which have dragged on for eight years now -- never resulted in criminal charges against the Ostipows.

Dirty LEO's, prosecutors, judges, IRS, et al who take advantage of loopholes in the law and confiscate carte blanche are scum of the Earth. All the bastards have to do is say "drugs" or "tax evasion", and the victimizing starts. It's very, very difficult for an honest citizen who has been set up to
recoup his losses, even with legal help. Sad, but even lawyers benefit dishonestly from these illegal seizures.
Without going into detail, I can say that much of my "investigative journalism" delved into many of these cases; and many ended with good results for the victim.

The headliner lies. She didn't fall off her bike. The girl struck an automobile and tried to ride away.
That's an example of what I mean when I say the media instigates hate.

North Carolina just passed a law, HB 972, that prohibits body and dash cam footage from being released to the public. :bs: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney has the authority to release the footage of Keith Lamont Scott’s death before the law goes into effect in October. We'll see.

No, YOU lie.

- Nothing in the story indicates that she "struck an automobile", as opposed to the automobile striking her. There's no indication that she did anything wrong before police got involved.

- The police arrested her because she "refused treatment." There's is no Maryland law that says you can’t refuse treatment. (There are in some states. You can absolutely refuse treatment, get taken to the hospital against your will, and be released shortly after with $40,000 in medical bills. )

- For refusing treatment they slammed her against a brick wall, handcuffed her, threw her in the back of a police car, and THEN pepper-sprayed her. Because they thought she was injured.

- Tellingly, they didn't then take her to the hospital, the whole point of arresting her. They took her to a police station.

- AND THEN they told the hospital that the reason she was arrested was not because she was refusing treatment, but because she wouldn’t give insurance information. "Insurance was never mentioned, and furthermore, who expects a kid on a bike to have insurance information?"

Funny how with you it's AWAYS the black person's fault.

It could be Seth Milner's misogyny, too.

To be fair, there are conflicting accounts. The driver (and witnesses?) says that she ran into the side of the car, which would be sufficient to detain her, and I'm not sure what rights to refuse treatment a 15 year old has, especially a head injured one. She says that she was knocked out for 2 minutes. We'll see.

That said, their treatment of her looks way excessive, especially if they thought she was head injured. Disoriented, Irritable, Combative (DIC head) is a classic sign of brain injury . . . and she's a 15 year old girl. There should have been an ambulance there and medics alone can sometimes deescalate and defuse.

You are correct that a hospital should have been the first stop, especially with a minor. The usual process would have been for the cops to hold her there if she was refusing treatment until a parent or guardian could make the final decision. Plus, in most places if a patient is in custody the government pays the bill.

Charlotte to release body and dash camera video of shooting

Thanks to the new law this will be one of the last times, at least until NC loses a FOIA-type suit like it's lost so many other suits over government repression.

They can say anything they want about "he had a gun" or "he didn't do this or didn't do that," but the irrefutable fact is that a guy is sitting in his car minding his own business and bothering no one; cops are looking for somebody else; guy in his car is dead. Is it really too much to think that somebody handled the situation poorly, even if not illegally?

He's black. So, no.
Charlotte police release video of fatal shooting after protests (video here)

Charlotte police released body camera and dashboard videos on Saturday showing the fatal shooting of a black man that triggered protests in the North Carolina city, but the footage did not show whether the victim was holding a gun.

A dashboard camera from a police car showed Keith Scott, killed on Tuesday, exiting his car and backing away from it. Police shout to him to drop the gun, but it is not clear that he has anything in his hand. Then shots break out and Scott drops to the ground.

A second body camera video from an officer does not show the moment of shooting. It shows Scott outside his vehicle before he is shot, but it is not clear whether he has something in his hand. Then the officer moves and Scott is out of view until he is seen on the ground....
If it was a gun in his hand, it was never raised. :ateeth: Also, only one cop fired. Why didn't the others think they needed to?

Why, of course I did. I should know better than to refute you. If you could comprehend and absorb the meaning of my words "the headlines lie", then re-read the headline, the STORY HEADLINE says she fell off the bicycle.

- Nothing in the story indicates that she "struck an automobile", as opposed to the automobile striking her.
Whoever hit who, the scratches on the car didn't magically appear.

- There's no indication that she did anything wrong before police got involved.
Other than attempt to leave the scene?

- The police arrested her because she "refused treatment." There's is no Maryland law that says you can’t refuse treatment.
Watch the video again, Mr. Bleeding Heart and then check your vast wealth of knowledge concerning Maryland law. The first words out of her precious, innocent 15 year old mouth was "get the fuck away from me". From that point it was "hand-to-hand" combat with her being arrested for disorderly conduct. (Too bad they couldn't slap that filthy mouth, huh?) Also, she was taken away for refusing to identify herself or her parents. Comprehend much?

(There are in some states. You can absolutely refuse treatment, get taken to the hospital against your will, and be released shortly after with $40,000 in medical bills.)
If I get taken to a hospital and I was coherent enough to refuse and I was forced to go, go buy yourself a ringside ticket so you can watch me pay the medical bill. I can see why you Canadians might get suckered into that.
There are other stories of this on the Internet. You ought to read some of them. Maryland law also says a minor who is involved in some sort of altercation must be released to the custody of the parent(s). By refusing to give her name or that of her parents, that put the responsibility of her welfare in the care of the police, who could be sued if they let her go and she went off somewhere and had a medical condition that some fast-talking lawyer could accuse police responsibility because of their negligence.

- For refusing treatment they slammed her against a brick wall, handcuffed her, threw her in the back of a police car, and THEN pepper-sprayed her. Because they thought she was injured.
Did you see her being slammed against the wall in the video? Did you see her being "thrown" into the back of the police car? I saw her being pepper-sprayed because of her combative nature.

- Tellingly, they didn't then take her to the hospital, the whole point of arresting her. They took her to a police station.
Why would they take her to the hospital? You said she refused treatment! The whole point of arresting her, (if she was in fact "arrested") or carting her off, was to ascertain identity and responsibility for her actions.

- AND THEN they told the hospital that the reason she was arrested was not because she was refusing treatment, but because she wouldn’t give insurance information. "Insurance was never mentioned, and furthermore, who expects a kid on a bike to have insurance information?"
Back-tracking again? You just can't get your shit together can you? When and where did they tell the hospital anything? You just said she wasn't taken to a hospital.

Funny how with you it's AWAYS the black person's fault.
Funny how with you it's AWAYS the black person that's the poor innocent, hapless victim. Would your bleeding-heart liberal ass been so upset had the trashy-mouth 15 year old girl been white? I blame the girl's attitude; the color of her skin, which happened to be Black, has no bearing on how I feel. If I was blind and was hearing the tirade, I would feel the same because I couldn't see the color of her skin.

Could be, but highly doubtful. I willing to bet I love women a helluva lot more than you do . . .

To be fair, there are conflicting accounts. The driver (and witnesses?) says that she ran into the side of the car, which would be sufficient to detain her,
I believe she ran the red traffic light.

and I'm not sure what rights to refuse treatment a 15 year old has, especially a head injured one. She says that she was knocked out for 2 minutes. We'll see. That said, their treatment of her looks way excessive, especially if they thought she was head injured.
Given her highly-combative nature, I imagine that it was rather difficult to handle her with kid gloves; and that would be cause for the inability to determine any injuries; but she's a Black kid and I'm just an old misogynist; what do I know?

Disoriented, Irritable, Combative (DIC head) is a classic sign of brain injury . . . and she's a 15 year old girl. There should have been an ambulance there and medics alone can sometimes deescalate and defuse.
There is an ambulance in the cover freeze-frame and it arrives @ the 1:11 mark of the video. It appears the medics didn't have the opportunity to check her over.

You are correct that a hospital should have been the first stop, especially with a minor. The usual process would have been for the cops to hold her there if she was refusing treatment until a parent or guardian could make the final decision.
Therein is where this went ballistic. She tried to run pedal away when the cops first arrived, she began cursing them, and then she refused to give her name and/or the name of her parents. Unfortunately the final decision had to be made by the cops who were not exactly on a Sunday picnic.

Plus, in most places if a patient is in custody the government pays the bill.
How dare you even suggest that rstrong is a liar! He said above that one can be forced to go to the hospital and get socked with the hospital bill! Repent or perish!

You're confused. This isn't Canada.
So Mr. Brilliance; tell us in your own words what exactly is the proper thing to do when your car is stopped by a police officer?

Wait, lets make this multiple choice. You can place a red X by all the choices you feel is proper.
Copy and paste your results.

____ 1. -- Jump out of your car cursing and screaming that you know your rights and he had no business stopping you.

____ 2. -- Sit calmly in your car with your hands on the steering wheel and wait for the officer to approach your car.

____ 3. -- Sit calmly in your car with your hands on the steering wheel and when he reaches your car, swing your door open violently and knock him to the ground and attempt to get his weapon(s).

____ 4. -- If the officer tells you to exit your vehicle, do so with both hands always in sight.

____ 5. -- If the officer tells you to exit your vehicle, do so with both hands always in sight, and then suddenly turn to retrieve your papers from your car.

____ 6. -- Tell the officer to go fuck him/herself since YOU aren't bound by any rule of law or code of conduct, and you know your rights.

Obvious answers for a white guy, Seth. But since you can't seem to relate to the difference in people of other races/ethnicity very well, and since you like dogs (or at least your dog), let's try another analogy.

A dog that's been treated well all its life, and has no reason to see humans as anything other than food trucks with auto belly rubs might even come willingly to a dogcatcher or a dognapper. Surely would approach people in the park without a growl. Dogs that have received harsh treatment all their lives have earned their trust issues, and it's hard to them them to come to you even if you have food in your hand. For dogs, as well as people, it's not just the conditions of right now that determine how they act, it's the conditions of their lives.
