Re: Electoral Votes Redux
Hard to pick out one part of Noonan's column that shows her utter stupidity,
but this one stands out, using a bit of the old amateur psychology. More of
those "vibrations."
"This is not a man who feels himself on the verge of a grand victory. His campaign
doesn’t seem president-sized. It is small and sad and lost, driven by formidable will
and zero joy."
Noonan is pretty smart compared to most of the truly crazy wingnuts, but even she
got this one wrong. She said don't pay attention to the polls, but to the real world
out there. Of course the polls reflected that real world better than Peggy's vibrations.
Noonan always seems to focus on people's appearance as if there were a big deal.
Obama is (supposedly) tired and wan. I believe she once wrote a paean to the
heroic physique of Bush I. Yikes.
Almost forgot old man Foolgle. I don't think he made a direct prediction, but he did note
the supposed air of desperation around Obama. Right desperation, wrong candidate.

A small reminder to the religious right that's all doom and gloom now.

I reckon old Lindsey is white enough and angry enough for three or four regular rednecks. I sincerely hope his assessment is correct and is continued by the GOP. Give us more like Bachmann, Palin, West, Akin......please?

The GOP will "evolve" on some of these issues like Obama did on gay marriage.Vrede wrote:By 2014 the GOP will be claiming to have always been pro-woman and pro-Latino and many of our more ovine forum cons will claim to have forgotten their own positions.

In the short term.. the GOP could possibly "adjust" . .. ... Evolving would require utilizing critical thinking skills to begin a period of self-examination and the ultimate acceptance of reality.. ..Supsalemgr wrote:The GOP will "evolve" on some of these issues like Obama did on gay marriage.Vrede wrote:By 2014 the GOP will be claiming to have always been pro-woman and pro-Latino and many of our more ovine forum cons will claim to have forgotten their own positions.
As a group..those suffering from radical conservatism typically require decades for such things to become ingrained... then as we have so often seen, they will claim that those things were always conservative values...
The fact is that Progress is antithetical to Conservatism.. If humanity had allowed Conservatives to drive.. We'd still be living in trees..caves at best..

Correct. On the other hand:Crock Hunter wrote: The fact is that Progress is antithetical to Conservatism.. If humanity had allowed Conservatives to drive.. We'd still be living in trees..caves at best..
"It only takes 20 years for a liberal to become a conservative without changing a single idea."
- Robert Anton Wilson
20 years ago I was a liberal. I wanted equality regardless of gender, race and sexual orientation. I was in favor of same-sex marriage.
Now we have (in Canada) equality regardless of gender, race and sexual orientation. We have same-sex marriage. Once same-sex marriage was allowed, it simply and quickly disappeared as an issue. The world didn't end, religious freedoms were still protected, and there's been no noticable effect on society.
The Catholics and evangelists want to do away with all this. I want it to stay as is, because the current way works just fine.
Over 20 years I've become a conservative without changing a single idea.

I understand what you're saying.. this nation's founders were Liberal... but we wish to Conserve their efforts..rstrong wrote:Over 20 years I've become a conservative without changing a single idea.
But isn't it a bit of elucidatory contortion .. you wish to conserve the liberal ideals that you fought for... however intolerance ("The Catholics and evangelists want to do away with all this.") is not a Liberal tenet..

Re: Electoral Votes Redux
Well, the opposite of conservative is not liberalism.Crock Hunter wrote:But isn't it a bit of elucidatory contortion .. you wish to conserve the liberal ideals that you fought for... however intolerance ("The Catholics and evangelists want to do away with all this.") is not a Liberal tenet..
There's more than one scale here:
Left/Right: The religious could be anywhere on this scale. Jesus's teachings are arguably on the far left, while it's the far right who wants a theocracy based on their interpretation.
Libertarian/Authoritarian: Conservatives could be anywhere on this scale. Traditional Republicans are on the libertarian side of the scale, while the religious right is on the authoritarian side.
Liberals are on the libertarian side. (Classical liberalism: a political ideology that advocates unregulated markets, limited government, rule of law, due process, and individual liberties including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and others. Take away the religious right and the intolerance, and the Republicans are a bunch of classical liberals. Sorry.)
Conservative/Progressive: This is where I and the Catholics/evangelists have swapped places. I like things as is, and the church want to change things.
I suppose you could say that I'm still a liberal, AND I'm a conservative.

Again, the two terms are not contradictory.Vrede wrote:Related to Mitten?rstrong wrote:...I'm still a liberal, AND I'm a conservative.
If you like and already have individual liberties including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and others, and you don't want them taken away, then you're a liberal AND a conservative.

Re: Electoral Votes Redux
Speaking of electoral votes, Obama got 29 of them in Florida. And guess whose votes helped. Cuban Americans. Obama got 48% of that vote, compared to 35% he got last election, out of a group that has heavily been Republican since at least Bay of Pigs. That is major in-roads, or, from the Republican standpoint, major defections. When the South Florida Cuban-heritage population starts to bail on Republicans, it not just Brunhilde that's starting to sing - it's Graciela Perez-Grillo too. (OK, so she's not actually singing in this world, but I like the pic and you can play her music).

Re: Electoral Votes Redux
We laugh and talk about the GOP going away. I dont want to see that happen. I want a country that has two strong voices of reason. Our two party system has always been a success. And I hope for our future, the GOP regains some common sense and once again provides someone that will give us a choice. It is my hope that this election open the eyes and the hearts of alot of people. The aging white segment are scared and they see their way of living disappearing. That fear must be replaced with the knowledge that our society is one with many races and faces.
