Using the lord's name in vain means that you're using it with no expectation of anything happening; it signifies a lack of respect or belief, just like if you drill for water in the desert, you do so in vain...in misguided expectation that you will find water. There's probably some Biblical fable about this very thing. I sometimes go looking, in vain, for hundred dollar bills or other lucky tokens that may be lying out on the ground. I also now and then hope that trump will go at least a week without telling a stupid lie, this endeavor also in vain. So this "in vain" condition is misunderstood but quite common. But there's no goddam way I'm going out in the desert and drill for water.

Deep wells are transforming the desert to a land of milk and honey
We live on a small ranch in rural Arizona, and recently had a well drilled. ... as before the well was drilled, we had to haul water via a 600-gallon tanker trailer to the site. The area is considered part of the Painted Desert.
A good portion of the American Southwest would still be inhospitable desert if it weren't for a bunch of socialist government projects out there that provided irrigation systems and water supplies for the increasing populations out there. During the course of these gargantuan projects, it was not uncommon for several workers per day taking the lord's name in vain due to dropping tools on their feet or accidentally banging your head on a rock or even being menaced by a rattlesnake. The US military also has a long and illustrious history of taking the lord's name in vain.

That's NOT in vain, goddammit! It serves an important evolutionary purpose.
Swearing can help relieve pain, study claims
Swearing after hurting yourself can help numb the pain of an injury, new research suggests.

Scientists from Keele University found that letting forth a volley of foul language can have a powerful painkilling effect, especially for people who do not normally use expletives.
To test the theory, student volunteers placed their hands in a bucket of ice cold water while swearing repeatedly.
They then repeated the exercise but, instead of swearing, used a harmless phrase instead.
Researchers found that the students were able to keep their hands submerged in the icy water for longer when repeating the swear word - establishing a link between swearing and an increase in pain tolerance.
They also found that the pain-numbing effect was four times more likely to work in the volunteers who did not normally use bad language.
The team believes the pain-lessening effect occurs because swearing triggers the ''fight or flight'' response.
The accelerated heart rates of the students repeating the swear word may indicate an increase in aggression, in a classic fight or flight response of ''downplaying feebleness in favour of a more pain-tolerant machismo''.
The research proves that swearing triggers not only an emotional response, but a physical one too, which may explain why the centuries-old practice of cursing developed and why it still persists today.
Dr Richard Stephens, who worked on the project, said: ''Swearing has been around for centuries and is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon.
''It taps into emotional brain centres and appears to arise in the right brain, whereas most language production occurs in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain.
''Our research shows one potential reason why swearing developed and why it persists.''
Also, it goes without saying that Yosemite Sam would have been much more successful had Warner Brothers studios not changed his original rant from "Goddamit you motherfuckers, I'm gonna blast ya!" to "Dad burn it dad gum it, I'm gonna blast ya!" And not many folks realize that Foghorn Leghorn was originally slated to say "Goddamit, I say goddamit, look at me when I'm talkin to ya" instead of "Boy, I say boy, look at me when I'm talkin to ya." They felt they had to do these changes for the kids who hung on every word these icons uttered. All we can say is "what if?"
I'll admit I've not given you much hell over your religious bigotry because sociopaths such as yourself have no respect for other's opinions or religious beliefs; so yes, I'll have to say I'm OK with your filthy religious bigotry. OK.
I don't even like sanitized, vulcanized, organic, free range, pasteurized, bastardized, homogenized, or freeze dried religious bigotry. That shit can just go on down the road.I just realized this is probably the post with the most "Zs" in it that I've ever done. Eight Zs, a fucking record.

I said good luck. You're up against one mean-spirited bunch of hombres here, Amigo. Along with the guidance of their supreme leader, they can be highly insulting to your faith and or religious beliefs. They've run off several members already with their running rhetoric and ridicule.

Were these members here at one time?

BMW/M appears from time to time. We've had Butthead(s) but no Bevis. I'm not personally familiar with the others.
I recently read "Little America" by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, a book about our involvement in Afghanistan. In the 1950's the Afghan king wanted to improve the way of life in rural parts of the country and the US offered to help. The Morrison Knudsen company built Little America for its engineers and workers; even a swimming pool. This is the same company that built Hoover Dam and the SF Oakland Bay Bridge. So for a few years the company engaged in construction of dams and irrigation canals in an effort to develop parts of the country. Once the local Pashtun elders found out that Afghan girls were being taught alongside boys in schools the Americans built, they responded with violent opposition to such "progress." Anyway, as it turns out, the salinity of the soil in the areas where the irrigation systems were built was so high, crops just would not grow.....except for opium poppies. In any case, the rosy vision of the king and of Morrison Knudsen was not to be, and things have steadily gone downhill ever since. Rajiv also wrote "Imperial Life in The Emerald City" about the Green Zone in Iraq inhabited by the CPA. Both books are highly recommended by me and other Admirals of note. ok

Aquifers here have since been on the mend as the project diminished demand for groundwater.
For example, the sub-basins below the Phoenix metro area have seen average increases up to about 62 feet over the past 20 years, according to Arizona Department of Water Resources data.
But expect the focus on groundwater health to intensify. If the Colorado River is declared in a shortage, farmers around Phoenix and other areas that rely on CAP water expect to begin drilling again or, if they already are, increase their groundwater intake, Corkhill said.

A 1950's project.
Technological growth has changed tremendously in nearly 70 years. The Morrison Knudsen company was known for building things ( Dams, irrigation systems, Railways ) above ground. Do you know they filed bankruptcy in 1996.

1. I never posted about the groundwater levels anywhere. 2. In my post about the 1950's US activity in Afghanistan I said it was in the 1950's.
3. The principles of dam construction and irrigation systems is fundamentally the same as it was centuries ago; materials science has changed, along with methods of construction but irrigation is still moving water from one place to another, usually in a confined channel. Yes, I know the Morrison Knudsen Company history.
