Big Brother is Watching You

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.

Yeah, I noticed this today; pretty significant for NYT to come out for this. Hope it gets some traction. Dick Cheney is the Lester Maddox of our time, only worse.

Free Range! Let them do whatever they're able to do, and teach them to enlarge the range of things they can do. Also, read the percentages of child abductions that are actually strangers vs. people the kid knows. Lenore Skanzey (sp?) rules!

But it isn't really a "Big Brother" issue. Maybe not even a "Little Brother" even though the local gendarmes are "investigating." It's the fear-driven culture where every news blurb has a follow line "we'll show you how to protect... more at 11" Where a couple of people with Ebola cause widespread panic and appointment of a "czar."

On a percentage basis, a kid is safer walking home by him/herself than they are at home, at church, or at their Boy Scout meeting.

Vrede wrote:Plus, the cops stopped them from making it to the park when someone called them, reported the parents to CPS and fear-driven cultures can be Big Brother, too. Were you living in Montgomery County? I can't remember.

I did dither a bit over putting it here, but I couldn't think of a more appropriate thread and hesitate to start new ones over a one-time issue. If you can think of a better thread or feel that it deserves it's own, I won't object. I can move the posts or start a new thread and then move the posts.

My understanding is that the Ebola czar is not just concerned with a US spread but is also coordinating the vital and humanitarian US contribution to the international response, though I do agree with you about overblown US fears.
Yes, I lived in Montgomery County. Didn't have any issues with people reporting kids walking to/from the park. My rules as a kid included "be home by dark." And I rode a city bus to school in the first grade. Sure, the bus stop was less than a block from my house, required no changes, and dropped me off further down the same street, but still...

I don't have a problem with an Ebola czar per se, just the way the entire event/situation was handled.

So....how does quotation marks make a quote less "grammatical and accurate"? Or is it because I use them, you have a problem with them?

Effort noted.

You'll just have to overlook it; I was an English teacher in my former life; besides, there's only one quotation mark at the beginning of the quote.

Saw a story today about how law enforcement agencies are asking Google to disable some sort of app that tells people where cops are. Looks like little brother don't like being monitored.

However, we couldn't find it that night since the cops had gotten so much negative feedback from the public they had cancelled the idea. So, we stayed in and broke the law.
Back when I was still a married man, the kid that lived next door once cut down a tree that was in my yard without asking me if he could do it. He also would take a boat out that his dad brought here from Florida and still had "FL" numbers on it here in NC. And he also had a little hot rod Chevy that he totaled on the way home from high school, which was less than a mile away from the house. This kid is now a NC State Trooper stationed in Polk County. During all of his above described exploits, I was securely in, at home, breaking the law.

Is that from personal experience? Not that I would judge you.
