Idiot box thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Over the past few days I've discovered and been watching a show called "Whose Line Is It Anyway" and at the start of each show, the host (an attractive Black woman) says "let's make some stuff up" and it always reminds me of the current state of the Republican party. They are totally insane.

Yeah, some of the stuff they come up with on the spur of the moment is hilarious. And the "let's make some stuff up" line is probably what every goddamn GQP Congressional committee announces at the start of their proceedings. But if they don't say that, they should since that's what invariably happens..

I watched Happy Days occasionally, but was never a big fan. I thought spin-off Laverne and Shirley was a better show. Happy Days was derived from the American Graffiti film, which I thought was way over-rated. Maybe I should give it another chance after 50 years, but at the time I wasn't that impressed. It was set in 1962 (only 10 years ago at the time of the film), and I remember thinking wait - I was there, that was more or less my life except not in Modesto - and there were NO poodle skirts in 1962, or sock hops either. Girls wore Villager dresses and kilt skirts with sweaters that had a little chain and circle pins and Weejuns and hair that looked like Lesley Gore. But hey, maybe Modesto was behind in fashion. The cars were nice, though.

Yeah, I remember the Wolfman, and also his competitor Cousin Brucie. Speaking of old time radio, do you remember the early FM late-night jocks with the smooth mellow voices, playing requests for "Brenda in Doylestown, who's madly in love with Tom but he doesn't know she exists..."

In the late 60's/early 70;s I had WQUT-FM in Johnaon Ciry, TN. The late night DJ was "the old Tennessee Midnight Rambler" and he patterned his voice somewhat like Wolfman.....he'd say stuff like "when the Tennessee Midnight Rambler gets going, your old crebellum will flop around in your brainpan." He's play stuff like The Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd....

Chicagoland had the big three in the late 70's, the Loop (WLUP), WMET and WXRT. The Loop was the most popular and had Steve Dahl and Gary Meir, Chicago's version of Howard Stern before Howard Stern and was must listening in the morning. Steve and Gary gave us our infamous Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park. Owning a Loop t-shirt was a must have.

I remember listening to them in the early 80's and for some dumb reason Steve Dahl was actually bad mouthing Walter Payton. His producer cuts in and says, "uh Steve, Sweetness on line 1."

Silence.

WMET was rather generic but WXRT which is the only survivor was for serious music listeners and made musicologist and Beatle expert Teri Hemmert famous . If I'm listening to local radio now that isn't sports it's 93XRT.

I can remember listening to WLS Chicago way back when. I could only pick it up at night most of the time.

Larry Lujack?

WLS and WCFL were the two big 60's chicago stations, 890 and 1000 on your radio dial. Sometimes I could pick up WLS in Florida at night if the atmospheric were right.

I can still remember waiting for hit songs to come on at whatever minute past the hour they were scheduled for...

They were after my full time Florida life. I moved back to Chicago in the early 80's.

You didn't miss much. I didn't listen to Bubba, but he had his following. Lex and Terry were pretty entertaining for a morning commute drive, but I just found it pretty incredible that they were still around (syndicated out of Dallas) with the same act they've had for over 30 years. For one thing, their audience is male 18-34, and their humour tends toward the lower of that range, but they're pushing 60ish by now.

Yeah, I was never much for shtick radio. I couldn't stand John Boy and Billy who are also still around.

I couldn't stand them either, but how can they possibly still be around?
Actually, I haven't listened to on-air radio in years, maybe decades? Sirius is good as long as I'm still getting it for free, but I don't know that I'd subscribe if I didn't.

It's only seven bucks a month, well worth it.

I can't remember any of the DJ's from back then. Just that WLS would play a lot of stuff I liked.

I think it's up to $10 ($9.99)
Probably still worth it, considering, but we'll see how long they go without noticing me. Been a couple of years or so so far.
