I.R.S. Halts Free Online Offering for Filing Taxes Directly
The new program, Direct File, helped low- and moderate-income taxpayers file their returns more easily, and had been expanding.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/06/busi ... -file.html
The Internal Revenue Service is shutting down its free online system for filing tax returns, a program that the Biden administration introduced last year and that users gave high marks.

The fate of the program, Direct File, had become increasingly uncertain given Republican criticism. But a recent report from the Treasury Department made clear that the agency would suspend the offering and suggested that the I.R.S. focus its efforts on its other free programs, particularly Free File, a partnership with a collection of commercial providers.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is also the acting I.R.S. commissioner, confirmed the plan outside the White House on Wednesday, saying the program was halted because it wasn’t widely used. “And we think the private sector can do a better job,” he said.

Direct File faced opposition from commercial tax-preparation software firms and from Republicans in Congress, who had urged President Trump to end the program. The I.R.S. was instructed to explore a free direct-filing option as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the wide-ranging law championed by Democrats and the Biden administration.

“The bottom line here is that the government built something that people liked, but that doing so upset the private industry,” said Adam Ruben, vice president of campaigns and political strategy at the Economic Security Project, an advocacy group for efforts that help low- and moderate-income families. “So now the Trump administration is bending to the power and influence of that industry at the expense of the American people.”

Mr. Ruben said users had saved an average of $160 in filing fees charged by big tax preparation companies.

The free Direct File program was introduced in 2024, for the 2023 tax year, on a restricted basis to low- and moderate-income taxpayers in a dozen states with simpler returns. It widened its reach for the 2024 tax year after the initial trial went well, and became available in 13 additional states and added more features.

In the 2024 tax year, when 146 million returns were filed, just under 300,000 filers used Direct File, at a cost of $31.8 million; roughly 141,000 filers used the offering in the program’s inaugural year, according to the Treasury report to Congress, which said that demand was below expectations.

“While lack of awareness was a factor, eligibility restrictions tied to covered tax situations (rather than a simple income limit) created confusion,” the report said.

For the 2024 tax year, Direct File was open to single filers with wages of $200,000 or less, while married couples filing jointly were eligible as long as their combined wages did not exceed $250,000. Direct File was not open to people who itemized their tax deductions.

The report also suggests modernizing and promoting Free File, which is available to filers if their adjusted gross income is $84,000 or less.

“This path forward aims to increase awareness of and access to free filing services in a cost-effective way that better serves taxpayers’ interests without imposing unsustainable burdens on the government,” the report said.

Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, said she had filed a bill this year to end the program. “Thankfully, the Trump administration is taking decisive action to shut down this wasteful and unconstitutional program,” she added.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, said Direct File had been created because the existing free options were insufficient — and tax preparation companies had been caught using deceptive practices to trick taxpayers into overpaying.

“Trump and Bessent had already gutted the team that ran the Direct File program, so the outcome of this study was predetermined and the report itself is a sham,” he said in a statement

I don't know what's more stupid/ludicrous/laughable, that SPINO and Thune think that playing chicken at DonOLD's beckoning is good for them or their position of open the government then we'll negotiate.

Yeah, right, have they met DonOld or do they think the country is that stupid?

Sooooo trustworthy.
As we've seen over the past few years, they're more worried about primaries than anything else. Maybe, maybe, they'll learn that's a foolish tactic in 2026.
Gonna be a long shutdown.

Can anyone see DonOld folding? His ego won't allow it no matter how many people suffer.

Maybe when the airlines start to go broke.

No surprise that a TN Senator such as Blackburn is on board with this. She's a real nut.

Making a technicality argument to deny food to American children and seniors?

Crazy and just cruel on so many different levels.

This will not endear DonOld, SPINO and the Republicans to anyone during the shutdown. :angry-cussing: :obscene-birdiedoublered:

And Moscow Mitch's stacked SCOTUS?
Guess we might find out if they're actual human beings, although it might be moot if they sit on their hands long enough.

Not human beings, they're MAGA.

Jeebus this dude is corrupt

The Bombshell Inside Trump’s $1.3 Billion Pardon Market
The Pardon for Pay President

https://medium.com/@carmitage/the-pardo ... 1d01767923
In December 2020, federal prosecutors unsealed evidence of a presidential pardon bribery scheme during Trump’s first term. Court documents revealed a “bribery conspiracy” involving “substantial political contribution in exchange for a presidential pardon.” No charges were filed. Four years later, Trump returned to office and issued clemency to more than 1,600 individuals in his first 10 months. For context, Obama issued 1,927 grants over eight years. Biden issued fewer than 200 over four years. Trump’s first term produced 237 over four years. Trump’s current pace exceeds all modern presidents combined.

...

Trevor Milton founded Nikola, an electric truck company. In October 2022, a jury convicted him of securities fraud after prosecutors proved he deceived investors with a viral video showing a prototype truck appearing to drive under its own power. The truck was actually rolling downhill after being towed to the top. The jury deliberated for hours after a two-month trial. Federal prosecutors sought $695.2 million in restitution from Milton, including $680 million to Nikola shareholders and $15.2 million to wire fraud victim Peter Hicks. Many investors lost retirement savings during the COVID-19 pandemic and waited for repayment.

...

In October 2024, Milton and his wife donated more than $1.8 million to Trump’s reelection campaign. Milton personally contributed $920,000 to the Trump 47 Committee and $284,000 to the RNC. The combined total represented one of the largest individual contributions to Trump that cycle.

Five months later, on March 27, 2025, Trump personally called Milton to inform him of his pardon. Trump granted it the next day. The pardon eliminated both Milton’s four-year prison sentence and the $695.2 million restitution obligation. Investors will never be repaid.

...

Trump stated at a press conference that Milton’s crime was supporting “a gentleman named Donald Trump for president.” The timing established a price. Donation in October. Pardon in March. The transaction was complete.

...

Paul Walczak ran nursing homes in Florida. Between 2013 and 2016, he withheld approximately $7.4 million from employees’ paychecks that should have gone to federal tax payments. He also failed to pay $3.5 million in employer tax obligations. The total tax loss to the federal government exceeded $10 million. Walczak used the stolen funds to purchase a yacht and finance a lavish lifestyle. Low-wage healthcare workers whose taxes were stolen faced IRS penalties and credit damage. A federal judge sentenced Walczak to 18 months in prison and ordered him to pay $4.4 million in restitution.

His mother is Elizabeth Fago, a major Republican fundraiser. In early April 2025, Fago attended a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser where tickets cost $1 million per person.

Twelve days after Walczak’s sentencing, on April 23, Trump pardoned him before he served a single day. The pardon eliminated the restitution. Healthcare workers will never be repaid.

...

The situation isn’t complicated, just nakedly corrupt. Trump has issued clemency to more than 1,600 individuals in 10 months, more than any modern president issued in a full term and 7x more than Biden issued in a 4 year term. The pardons eliminated $1.3 billion in court-ordered restitution and fines owed to victims. Documented payments to Trump, his family businesses, and his political allies preceded and followed many pardons. Federal prosecutors found evidence of a bribery scheme during his first term. No charges were filed. The Supreme Court ruled such acts are immune from even being investigated.

Definitely worth a read. There's many more examples of bald faced corruption.

Republicans proclaim themselves the party of law and order. But then you read articles like the one I posted, with corruption occuring out in the open, justice side lined for bribery. What do they even believe? Do these people stand for anything at all?
