Judge Merchan Suddenly Taken Off Case

... On Monday, Ellen Biben, an administrative judge for New York County Supreme Court, Criminal Term, sent an email to parties informing them that Merchan could no longer oversee the trial, which is due to commence on September 23.

... Merchan, who has presided over the case since September 2022, also oversaw Trump's criminal trial in May, which resulted in a jury convicting the former president on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments to adult film actor Stormy Daniels.

... In his New York criminal case, Bannon faces six charges—including money laundering, conspiracy and scheming to defraud—related to his alleged attempt to cheat donors to his fundraising campaign "We Build the Wall," which intended to privately construct sections of a border wall between Mexico and the U.S.

Bannon was originally charged with federal crimes in August 2020 alongside Brian Kolfage, Andrew Badolato and Timothy Shea for allegedly diverting more than $1 million from the campaign, which built three miles of fencing despite raising $25 million.

Kolfage, Badolato and Shea have since been convicted and sentenced to prison for their involvement.

Trump pardoned Bannon in January 2021,

but in September 2022, Bannon was indicted at a state level in New York. Presidential pardons apply only to federal crimes, not state offenses....

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday denied a request by Steve Bannon, an influential ally of former President Donald Trump, to keep him out of prison while he appeals his conviction for contempt of Congress for defying a congressional committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Bannon made the request to the justices on June 21 after a Washington-based federal appeals court rejected his bid to delay him from reporting to prison on July 1 - this coming Monday - as scheduled. Trump is the Republican candidate challenging Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 U.S. election. Bannon's sentence could keep him imprisoned for much of the rest of the presidential race.

No justice publicly dissented from Friday's decision.

Trump's NJ golf club liquor licenses are in Jr.'s name. Hiding behind his son isn't helping as the state moves to revoke.
On Friday, state officials said Trump's new felony record bars him from profiting from the licenses.

They announced they will not renew the licenses for Trump National Bedminster and Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck due to last month's felony hush-money conviction.

The two clubs can continue to serve alcohol pending a July 19 hearing on the two licenses, which expire Sunday.

... Paul Dans, a former top adviser in Trump’s administration, steered Project 2025 as it carved a leading role in shaping discourse around what conservatives dreamed they could accomplish if Republicans won back the White House. While a source with knowledge of the planning said Project 2025 would be effectively ending its policy operations, others familiar with the matter noted that it was always the plan to move on to the next phase now – and efforts to build a conservative personnel apparatus would continue....

In recent months, Trump has lashed out against Project 2025, calling some of its ideas “absolutely ridiculous and abysmal.” He strained to distance himself from the work, claiming he had “no idea who is behind it.” Top Trump adviser Chris LaCivita recently referred to Project 2025 as “a pain the a**” for the Trump campaign.

Dans’ departure was confirmed in a statement to CNN Tuesday by Dr. Kevin Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, the group that launched Project 2025. In addition to stepping down from Project 2025, Dans is also leaving the Heritage Foundation....

A spokesperson for Heritage, though, said despite Dans’ exit, work will continue on the current phase of Project 2025, which is a nationwide search to fill a Trump administration with loyal conservatives....

Still, Trump’s efforts to keep the organization at arm’s length were complicated by his close ties to the people behind it.

At least 140 people who worked in the Trump administration had a hand in the project, a CNN review found, including more than half of the people listed as authors, editors and contributors to “Mandate for Leadership.” Nobody embodied the shift from Trump insider to Project 2025 champion more than Dans.

Dans served as chief of staff at the US Office of Personnel Management during the Trump administration where he served as a liaison between the agency and the White House. He told a gathering of conservative broadcasters earlier this year in Nashville that he intended to work for Trump again if he win.

He has also assured Trump’s supporters that Project 2025 would become a reality if the former president returned to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In June, he told former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast that Project 2025 was “gonna be a D-Day invasion plan” and urged listeners to “flood the zone with us.”

“We’re going to make this happen under President Trump,” Dans said. “And this is ultimately his direction and his team’s direction.”

Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform experienced a third straight month of audience decline in June, a leading analyst of rightwing media said, detecting signs of “trouble at the ballot box” for the Republican presidential nominee.

Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department attorney who became a central figure in Donald Trump’s bid to seize a second term he didn’t win, should be suspended from practicing law for two years, a Washington, D.C., disciplinary panel ruled Thursday.

The oversight panel, authorized by the D.C. bar, rebuked Clark for aiding Trump’s effort to use the Justice Department’s might to undermine the results of the 2020 election. As part of that effort, Clark proposed a plan to persuade Republican-led legislatures to appoint pro-Trump presidential electors in states Joe Biden won. Clark’s role in the scheme violated his code of professional ethics as an attorney and even threatened to destabilize the country, the panel found.

“His recklessness risked disabling the Justice Department, throwing the Presidential election into chaos, and even potentially causing riots in the streets,” the three-member hearing committee ruled in a 216-page report. “We have found that Mr. Clark attempted to engage in reckless dishonesty.”

The panel, which previously concluded Clark had violated professional rules, is not the last word on Clark’s discipline. Its recommendation will now come before the D.C. Bar’s Board of Professional Responsibility, which will make its own recommendation to the D.C. Court of Appeals. The full process could take another year to reach its conclusion....
