The LEO thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

The last time I encountered a police "checkpoint" was about 1996 on old Spartanburg Highway. A NC state trooper was there by himself checking licenses. I lived near there and was on the way to return a VHS movie to the rental place. I did not have my wallet with me for some reason, so no license or id of any kind. When I got up to him, I immediately said "you're not gonna like this, but I don't have my license with me. But I know the number of it." I recited the seven digit number to him, he went to his radio for a few minutes, then came back and let me go. Nice guy, very professional, physically fit. If I'd had an open beer and a lit joint at the time, he probably would have been less amenable.....but it was early and I had not hit my stride.
  Of course, you're white and not a kid.

I hit one 10 or 12 years ago on Hwy. 25 between Hooterville and Fletcher, plus drug/immigrant ones in or near border states.

You inspired my response to "a socialist worker" about other socialist workers:
Quoting "Volk, Barbara" <bvolk@hvlnc.gov>:

Dear Mayor Volk,

Thank you for your quick response.

Perhaps I was not clear. I have no problem with traffic law enforcement, and the rude cop did not reminding me "to respect the speed limits." Rather, my issue is with making all drivers, ones who are doing nothing wrong, feel like they're passing through Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin.

Sincerely,
(Vrede too)
Already sent, but I could have been a little snarkier and said, "I was only reminded to respect speed limits when traffic is backed up and I can see half a dozen police cars." Probably best that I didn't think of it in time :D .
Glad I was able to provide inspiration. And I don't buy the mayor's line......if people are speeding in your neighborhood, a single cop car, even one with no cop in it, is an adequate deterrent to random speeders or short cut desperadoes. Besides, you don't find stolen cars, guns, or drugs while looking for speeders unless they are caught speeding and driving a stolen car and have guns and drugs on them. I myself make it a point not to exceed the speed limit while driving stolen vehicles, particularly when I've got an open bottle of Jack Daniels and a couple of handguns with the serial numbers filed off of them with me while I'm cruising around sniffing a toluene soaked rag in a paper bag and a couple pounds of skunk weed. Just sayin'.

I'm hoping that she is just confused. It would be depressing to learn that our moderate female mayor is a sleazy, lying authoritarian.

Thanks; I always attempt to make the right choice(s) that fit the particular situation. And I wouldn't be too hard on the mayor; I doubt the Chief consults with her on daily operations of his force. So I give her a pass on confusion and assert she had no clue of this until it was brought up. And if you decide to visit her office to discuss this matter in more detail, I advise you to forget about taking the Jack Daniels and skunk weed with you; you'll probably be ok driving the stolen car to her office if you park at least a couple blocks away and leave the guns with no serial numbers in the car. You can probably take the toluene rag/bag in with you since it only appears at casual glance to be lunch.

"a couple blocks away" hampers getaways.

Idk, I've always found booze and weed to be pretty persuasive, and guns always seem to seal the deal. Otoh, I've never tried making huffing part of my negotiations. Does it work for you?

Nah, just poking fun at what was once pretty common; toluene was an ingredient in model car glue back in the sixties; evidently there was a time when a lot of folks were sniffing it; so much so that they stopped using it in glue and put in something that was probably even more harmful when abused. I think this was back in the era when you could get five years for a joint roach.

:D I didn't really think that you huffed.

Never glue, but I tried huffing aerosol cans as a teen. It was wild, but pretty scary. My flirtation with it didn't last long.

Well, I confess to abusing model car glue; we'd use it to douse plastic army men and tanks and set them on fire. Plastic army men begin to melt once they reach a certain temperature, and the drips of their plastic bodies would make a sort of "zip zip zip" sound if you held them up while on fire and let the melting plastic drop to the ground. Hell, it was probably worse than sniffing glue smelling those burning plastic army men. Never sniffed aerosol stuff either but did once sneak a can of my mom's hair spray and spray it in front of a lighter. It was like a fucking flame thrower.

'Words matter': Trump accused of fuelling attacks on Hispanics as violent hate crimes hit 16-year high

Violent hate crimes have climbed to a 16-year year high in the US, with a surge in attacks on Hispanics, according to FBI data.

Reports of hate crimes dipped slightly in 2018 from an alarming increase the previous year, but violence rose as attacks increasingly targeting people instead of property.

In its review of statistics collected from more than 16,000 law enforcement agencies, the FBI said there had been 7,120 hate crimes reported last year. The figure was 55 fewer than 2017, a year in the same bureau data recorded a 17 per cent increase in hate crimes from 2016.

Reports of hate-motivated attacks on people account for 61 per cent of all hate crimes reported in 2018, a rise of 11.7 per cent. There were 24 murders, up from 15 in 2017.

Nearly 60 per cent of reported hate crimes in 2018 were motivated by a person’s skin colour, ethnicity or ancestry, according to the data....

Religious bias accounted for 18.7 per cent of the hate crimes reported by the FBI data. Jews were targeted in nearly 58 per cent of those attacks, and Muslims were targeted in 14.5 per cent.

Nearly 17 per cent of all hate crimes involved an attack against a person’s sexual orientation. Nearly 60 per cent of those incidents were anti-gay violence against men.

Some 2.2 per cent of crimes targeted a person’s gender identity, while 2.1 per cent of reports were classed as disability hate crimes.

Just moments ago, your #BrookhavenPolice officers answered the call each of us fears most 😳. Dozens of donuts fell from a Krispy Kreme delivery truck as it drove along Peachtree Road. 🚚🍩🍩. BPD rushed to the scene (🚨🚓💨🚔🚨), but to no avail. We found total carnage; donuts scattered along the curb and into gutter- THE GUTTER, people!!! 😲. The response time was stellar, but we couldn’t beat the 5 second rule 😢. We are deeply saddened to report that the donuts were a total loss 😭😭. As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time, and the senseless loss of these delicious pastries has deeply affected all of our officers 👮‍♂️👮‍♀️. We ask that you keep our department in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn this terrible moment. #OnlyHalfKidding #TheyLookedDelicious #WeKnowItsAstereotype #NoShame #DonutsMakeEveryoneHappy #🍩🍩🍩

Appalachia vs. the Carceral State
After a mountaintop was flattened by coal mining, politicians pushed to build a prison there. Then the community got organized.

A few KY tree huggers, civil libertarians and hillbillies vs Big Coal, the Repug establishment and the prison-industrial complex and their already done deal.
... Despite these efforts, on March 30, 2018, the BOP (Bureau of Prisons) posted a Record of Decision signaling its intent to begin building the prison. “I rushed back to Whitesburg in the middle of the night crying when I heard,” said Lill Prosperino, who had moved to West Virginia to organize against the construction of a 300-mile natural gas pipeline. “It was horrible.” Sexton agreed it was a deflating moment. “But it’s what we expected. They always had the advantage.” When powerful people wanted something done in eastern Kentucky, it usually happened. Some members of LGP started scheming about buying a plot of land in Roxana themselves—a last ditch effort to stall the project again. But, Sexton said, “we were not hopeful.”

The fight should have ended there. Instead, eight months later, Emily Posner filed suit in federal court. And seven months after that, in June 2019, the BOP reversed its decision.

They had won....
