I was listening to some talking head on MSNBC and he brought up an interesting point. The RNC convention was really a lackluster non inclusive affair that was not well watched and despite the shooting and convention there was no real bounce. Trump's floor and ceiling are set.
The DNC convention has the potential to be a real touchstone. Biden was denied a convention and traditional inauguration with all the accolades and right now he's a dem hero for multiple reasons.
He's gonna get a ton of love and adulation from the Clintons, Obamas and more as well as a huge pass the torch moment that looks to the future with optimism as well as a chance to remind everyone of the bad old days of trump.
I think it could really resonate.

So think strategy, or lack thereof, in a primary, personally trashing the opponents works pretty well because everybody in in the same party and you're really just trying to say "I'm better than those other sleaze bags who kick dogs." But in a general election, you're facing about half the voters already decided on somebody else - and usually somebody else that they've already recently voted for. If you want to win, you have to pull off some of those and collect about half of those who don't really care but will go to vote. Normal winning politicians become less extreme in rhetoric and more policy-focused. But Trump is still (and even more so) feeding red meat to his own rubes. How is he going to increase his support, or even keep anybody but his hard core cultists with that approach?

True, but it's also about maintaining/increasing enthusiasm and turnout amongst your loyalists and fair weather loyalists. Winning campaigns strike a balance.
