The homophobic thread :>

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Funny how a lot of self-proclaimed Christians (among others) don't think anybody who doesn't believe in the Bible as holy isn't qualified to comment on it or other religious documents. Funny how a lot of those people have never bothered to study comparative religion to see how close - or how far away - their beliefs are to others or to enlarge their perspective. Funny how a lot of them will use a Biblical quote as their source of thought, but disallow a conflicting quote or even a conflicting interpretation cited to a credible theologian.

Just so. And it often seems that for Bible thumpers, ignorance of the history of Christianity is a requirement for being a Christian. That includes not only how Christianity radically evolved over its first three or four centuries, but how it's evolved in the last century.

They insist that church tenets should be unchanging, not changing with the times - ignoring or ignorant to the fact that church tenets have ALWAYS changed with the times.

The Catholic church for example only forbade cremation in 1886. Pagan practice and all that. But then it allowed cremation about fifty years ago once it became popular again anyway. Other branches of Christianity followed a similar cycle. Is cremation the fad, or the forbiddance of cremation?

Christmas used to be banned in America. Is it a fad? Is the church improperly changing with the times to celebrate it?

Go back a few decades and many Christian churches were preaching the "Curse of Ham" to justify denial of civil rights to blacks. Heck, the Mormons still considered them cursed, unable to hold high church positions, even when Mitt Romney was dodging Vietnam preaching in France. People like Mr.B fought equality for blacks just like he fights equality for gays now, using religion to justify bigotry. 'Cuz the church isn't supposed to change with the times.

For most of the history of Christianity the church supported slavery. The Bible - both the Old and New Testaments - certainly support it. Is the ending of slavery just a fad? Have the branches of Christianity that opposed it, in Mr.B's words, "turned their backs on God and they're no more a Bible believing, God-fearing, or Christian church than your local Walmart is?"

The Christian church supported same-sex unions for a thousand years, roughly from 500CE to 1500CE. This is before the Protestants split off, and before the east-west schism, so we're talking the bulk of mainstream Christianity. Today some branches of Christianity are supporting and performing same-sex marriages. Which is the fad, same-sex unions, or Mr.B style bigotry and hatred?

Captive virgins, polygamy and sex slaves: What marriage would look like if we actually followed the Bible
"Bible believers are beside themselves about the prospect that marriage norms and laws are changing, but let me tell you a secret about Bible believers that I know because I was one. Most don’t actually read their Bibles.

If they did, they would know that the biblical model of sex and marriage has little to do with the one they so loudly defend. Sex in the Bible includes rape, incest, master-slave sexual relations, captive virgins, and more. Of course, just because a story is told in the Bible doesn’t mean it is intended as a model for moral behavior. Does God forbid or command the behavior? Is it punished or rewarded? In the New Testament stories, does Jesus change the rules or leave them alone? By these criteria, the Bible not only describes many forms of sexual relationships (including sexually coercive relationships), it gives them the divine thumbs up."

here the 3,000 year old wing-nuts are getting them some virgins to screw - these genocidal pukes even glorify killing babies and raping children - but then the big bad sky-fairy (or egotistical authoritarian whack moses) told them too

1. Under God's direction, Moses' army defeats the Midianites. They kill all the adult males, but take the women and children captive. When Moses learns that they left some live, he angrily says: "Have you saved all the women alive? Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." So they went back and did as Moses (and presumably God) instructed, killing everyone except for the virgins. In this way they got 32,000 virgins -- Wow! (Even God gets some of the booty -- including the virgins.) 31:1-54

All you got to do is declare that "God told me!". Like I told B- the Biblical God seems thoroughly unable or unwilling to communicate with us directly. He only works through people on the fringes, wandering in the desert and shit, or "inspires" prophets and monks thru their dreams and such. He can't even smite the Midianites (or whoever are the villains of the week) himself- he sends Moses or Joshua or David. Why is the omniscient and omnipotent Lord God Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth all the Universe, ALWAYS unseen, and unheard, except by goatherds and madmen and virgins?

Speaking of cherry-picking .... For one with your vast knowledge of the Bible, it's weird how you can pick out scripture that you want to criticize and ridicule, post the same old drivel you post each time; yet fall all over yourself defending sin by criticizing others' use of scripture that clearly defines what the sin is.

"Which is why Mr.B disavows the entire Old Testament as not part of Christianity.."
More of your atheist accusations and fuming. I said the Law, as in the "rules" you've posted above, was given to the Jews; but you know that already.
You needn't throw any of that in my face; I didn't write it, and your pissin' & bitchin' about it doesn't bother me in the least. In fact I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for the entertainment ... most everybody is boring.

"except to quote cherry-picked bits when convenient."
Again ... those "cherry-picked bits" just happen to fit the "cherry-picked bits" you keep harpin' on.

"And why he ignores Jesus's complete lack of criticism for homosexuality..."
Jesus didn't have to say anything; God already said it: "it's abomination". Maybe Jesus figured man maybe was smart enough to know that without having to be told over and over .... ?

"instead latching on to a statement from Paul in his memo to the Corinthians. While disagreeing with and disavowing much of the rest of what Paul wrote in the same memo."
But you don't believe the Bible, Paul's teachings, or the existence of God; why are getting your step-ins all in a wrinkle? What I believe in never mattered to you anyway. Regardless what I "latched onto" or what I agree or disagree with, homosexuality is an abomination; a sin. My "misguided" beliefs and opinions, nor your ridiculous atheist rantings about what the Bible "really says and means" cannot nor will not ever change that. You just gonna have to deal with it, whether you like it or not.

"Mr.B is to Christianity what Donald Trump is to Presidential politics."
rstrong is an "expert" on what the Bible "really says and means" as Obama is the best president ever.

Yep, that's what I call qualifed, alright. (Of course we have to consider that's the height of his "intelligence" and "qualifications".)

"Funny how a lot of those people have never bothered to study comparative religion to see how close - or how far away - their beliefs are to others or to enlarge their perspective."
We've been over this ... what's the point in in-depth comparing of religions? Not all religions are the same in their doctrines and beliefs; which can only make for one confusing mess. Simply put, I'd rather believe in Christ born of a virgin, crucified for my sins, and risen as a Promised Savior. I have no need to seek further.

"Funny how a lot of them will use a Biblical quote as their source of thought, but disallow a conflicting quote or even a conflicting interpretation cited to a credible theologian."
Use a Biblical quote? You're joking, right? Surely you meant "cherry pick". OK ... seriously, I use a Biblical verse or quote that deals with the subject being "debated". I can't recall any "conflicting quotes", just plenty of conflicting opinions or interpretations on what my "cherry-picked" quotes or verses "really" mean.

With tears in his eyes, a lump in his throat, and words of great wisdom from his heart, rstrong wrote: "They insist that church tenets should be unchanging, not changing with the times - ignoring or ignorant to the fact that church tenets have ALWAYS changed with the times."
Just what Satan wants you to do; go with the flow. The Word of God hasn't changed; why should we? Because you and your ilk want us to?

"The Catholic church for example only forbade cremation in 1886. Pagan practice and all that. But then it allowed cremation about fifty years ago once it became popular again anyway. Other branches of Christianity followed a similar cycle. Is cremation the fad, or the forbiddance of cremation?"
"The Bible doesn't expressly forbid the practice of cremation, but the (cherry-picked )examples we have in Scripture of the people of God caring for the remains of the dead are decidedly in favor of burial. And of course the burial of our Lord Jesus Christ serves as an example which Christians have generally wished to follow."

Genesis 3:19 ...
"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."

What's really the point in embalming ? ... except to pay the undertaker more money? What good comes out of a rubberized body lying in a pricey box for eternity? I choose cremation; that "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" thingy.

"Christmas used to be banned in America. Is it a fad? Is the church improperly changing with the times to celebrate it?"
Depends on how it's celebrated. Leave Christ out of Christmas and the church is improperly changing.

"Go back a few decades and many Christian churches were preaching the "Curse of Ham" to justify denial of civil rights to blacks."
I know the scripture; never heard of any preaching like you've described. More atheist drivel?

"Heck, the Mormons still considered them cursed, unable to hold high church positions.."
When's the last (first?) time you were in a Mormon church?

"People like Mr.B fought equality for blacks just like he fights equality for gays now, using religion to justify bigotry."
More ignorance and atheist hate for God on your part.

" 'Cuz the church isn't supposed to change with the times."
You nailed it, Ace.

More ignorant ranting and atheist hate for God on your part.

"The Christian church supported same-sex unions :bs: for a thousand years, roughly from 500CE to 1500CE. This is before the Protestants split off, and before the east-west schism, so we're talking the bulk of mainstream Christianity."
You done spiked the :bs: meter ....

Image

"Today some branches of Christianity are supporting and performing same-sex marriages."
Some ... not all. Those that do are, according to Scripture, are churches that have grown cold and turned their backs on God.

"Which is the fad, same-sex unions .... "
The God-haters, Sodomites, etc. prefer the "same-sex unions", and anything else that fulfills their lustful desires of the body.

"...or Mr.B style bigotry and hatred?"
My "bigotry and hatred" is what you call belief in and adherence to Biblical Scripture. I can handle that.
To God Be The Glory!
