Re: A Florida Man...
I don't doubt this particular guy is a sleazebag, but he's got a point. He sells junk of all sorts. No requirement his junk has to be in good taste. I might have a different opinion if he had a selection of newly-ordered klansmen, or if he was giving out flyers, whatever. But I don't find the stuff he sells any more inherently awful than John Wayne Gacy's artwork or original documents from sale of slaves or holocaust pics and Nazi uniform pieces. The "Darkie" toothpaste seems a bit out there until you know the story.. https://newsone.com/2853883/darkie-darl ... e-colgate/
It's hard to tell from the limited pics and the story, but if this type of crap is a relatively small part of his inventory of ummmm "interesting" old stuff, I say I wouldn't shop there, but wouldn't picket his place either. If he somewhat specializes in racist stuff, it's a different story.

I wouldn't shop there - he paid someone else for all of these items - just as I don't shop at any of the roadside places with slaver flags, might write a letter saying so if I lived in Pensacola, probably wouldn't picket unless the bigots adopted him as a hero and called their own rally.

But I might have an accident in their bathroom. I would be so sorry and apologize. Like history, accidents are part of nature are commerce.

Nancy Oakley: (Madeira Beach) Politician who repeatedly licked man's face resigns
... Several others said that Ms Oakley’s face-licking habits are not exclusive to Mr Evans. The sponsor of the fishing tournament, and some volunteers, said that she had also licked their faces at the event and at other tournaments....

She must have taken Chevy Chase's song from Caddyshack to heart.......Chevy howls while serenading Lacey Underall that "....I was born to love you. I was born to lick your face." Not sure if this was before or after he snorted the salt, licked the lemon, and tossed the shot of tequila over his shoulder.

You could start yelling, "Spook," and see if any dogs come to you. Let us know how it works out.

No, I've managed to avoid that so far in my life - no point in changing now. If we'd given it a little more thought, we'd have waited until tomorrow for the seafood fest, and gone to the car show today...
http://www.carsonfifth.com/
The 2019 show will be held on February 9th. Our sponsors include Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale, Wells Fargo Advisors, Seminole Casino, Bank of America, Key Private Bank, Marine Max, Tire Choice, Naples Bentley-Porsche, Naples Motorsports, Mercedes Benz of Naples, Gulf Coast Motorworks and more. The dealers will once again bring a fine selection of exotic and classic cars, adding to the hundreds of enthusiast-owned entries that will fill Fifth Avenue in February.
And of course, over 150 Ferraris will be on display with a fine mix of vintage and current V-8s and V-12s from Maranello that are guaranteed to please the crowds. We expect to have several new 812 Superfasts and Portofinos on display.
The British contingent will include Jaguar, Lotus, Triumph, Aston Martin and the stately Bentleys. Porsches will be plentiful including some rare race cars. American cars will not be overshadowed, with over 60 Corvettes and other muscle cars expected.

Probably could have gotten away with that in Vermont - S Florida, not so much. But if there was a Seth with a dog named Spook, it would be interesting to see him address the dog in a crowd. I can see it - black couple walks by on the beach, stops and says, what a pretty lab - what's his name?

Re: A Florida Man...
Yes, and I'm right in both instances. A person should be able to name their black (or white) dog "Spook" without it immediately and inherently having only a racist meaning. And the guy named "Assman" should have been able to get a vanity license plate with his real and legal name on it, too, but it's nogonnahappen, at least not in Saskatchewan. https://nypost.com/2019/02/07/man-with- ... nse-plate/ Because people don't just get privately offended anymore, they get "outraged" and they howl on Twitter and post angry pics on Instagram, and news people, having been inured to TrumpTrumpTrump insults and trash talk print stories about poor Spook and his owner Assman being racists and probably kick their dog and screw their daughters. And maybe since last year or so I've gotten a bit more aware of just how easy-to-offend the world has gotten.Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Feb 09, 2019 7:30 pm

You said that the dog's name would offend real people face to face, you're correct about that, and this offense predates social media.

Re: A Florida Man...
Maybe it just feels like outrage is the emotion du jour (of every jour), and is applied with equal volume no matter the offense. I'm sure that's an exaggeration, but it's what it seems like to me. Whatever happened to mumbling "what an asshole..." and going on to enjoy the rest of your day/life?
I have a confession - back in the days of my loyal and courageous service to the US, my collegues and I sometimes referred to one side of the conflict we were watching as "ragheads" and the other side in various equally unsavory terms. Sorry - I'll go turn in my law license and liberal card now.

I used to tell Polish jokes. You should hear what I've called lawyers . . . but I never stopped doing that.
Meh, he can paint "Assman" all over his car if he wishes. My problem with it is that he wants the people of Saskatchewan to abet him. It's not like patriots have spilled blood over the right to vanity license plates.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Feb 09, 2019 7:47 pm... (mumbling): What an assman Assman is.

Re: A Florida Man...
I've seen a few names of people and places over the years that could be pronounced or imagined in a potentially offensive manner. F'rinstance, the little fluffy animal some people use for a dog and call a shit-sue. Or the Houha family, that probably couldn't get their name on a license plate, either. But is it really reasonable to let the risk that some will make fun of or mispronounce the word be the determining factor in whether or not it's offensive?

Rodney Dangerfield once said he'd been asked if he were a leg man, a breast man, or an ass man. He said that he is probably an ass man because a lot of people would tell him "your're an ass, man."

Re: A Florida Man...
For things like vanity license plates that are a state or province product, IMO it is reasonable. Otherwise, endless boundary-testing and controversy over what's supposed to be a fun collective endeavor. In different venues, including painting one's own "Assman" near the license plate, I'm on your side.O Really wrote: ↑Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:17 amI've seen a few names of people and places over the years that could be pronounced or imagined in a potentially offensive manner. Couldn't it also be said that Assman is being an ass, man? Instead of just mumbling, "What an asshole bureaucracy is," adorning the car with his own "Assman" and "going on to enjoy the rest of (his) day/life," he decided to be "offended" and "outraged" and ran whining to the press.
