Agreement affirms North Carolina transgender restroom rights

A federal judge approved a legal settlement Tuesday affirming transgender people's right to use restrooms matching their gender identity in many North Carolina public buildings.

The consent decree between the state's Democratic governor and transgender plaintiffs covers numerous state-owned buildings including facilities run by executive branch agencies that oversee the environment, transportation and Medicaid, among others. In return, the plaintiffs have agreed to drop pending legal action against the governor and other defendants.

The agreement was signed by Judge Thomas Schroeder after a three-year legal battle challenging North Carolina's so-called bathroom bill and the law that replaced it....

The agreement between the plaintiffs and Gov. Roy Cooper says nothing in the current state law can be interpreted to "prevent transgender people from lawfully using public facilities in accordance with their gender identity" in buildings controlled by the state's executive branch....

North Carolina's Republican legislative leaders, who passed the "bathroom bill" and its replacement, had opposed the consent decree....

Joaquin Carcano, the lead plaintiff and a transgender University of North Carolina employee, hailed the judge's decision in a statement.

"After so many years of managing the anxiety of H.B.2 and fighting so hard, I am relieved that we finally have a court order to protect transgender people from being punished under these laws," he said.

Still, he said the current law's moratorium on new local anti-discrimination laws "remains devastating." ...

Court rejects Kentucky's attempt to shirk legal fees in Kim Davis gay marriage case

Kentucky must pay $224,000 in legal fees related to former county clerk Kim Davis' refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.

Davis, the former Rowan County clerk, was successfully sued by several couples in 2015 for refusing to follow the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling establishing a right to same-sex marriage.

In 2017, a federal district judge held that the couples suing Davis for marriage licenses clearly prevailed and that the state of Kentucky must pay their legal fees and costs.

While Gov. Matt Bevin has personally supported Davis, once calling her "an inspiration ... to the children of America," his lawyers argued in January that Davis should foot the legal bill, not the state.

On Friday, a three-judge panel for the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati upheld the district judge's ruling that the state of Kentucky must pay the $224,000 in attorney fees and costs incurred by the same-sex couples....

Davis was defeated by a Democratic challenger, Elwood Caudill, in her bid for re-election in November 2018....

Conversion therapy group founder comes out as gay, apologizes

The founder of one of the nation's largest conversion therapy programs, who spent decades leading the organization, now says he is gay, apologizing for his role in the practice.

McKrae Game, who founded and led Hope for Wholeness in South Carolina, publicly announced he was gay in early June, more than two years after the organization's board of directors abruptly fired him....

In an interview with The Post and Courier published Saturday, Game called conversion therapy "a lie" and "false advertising" and called for the dissolution of conversion therapy practices or ex-gay ministries.

Game is one of several former gay conversion therapy leaders who have since cut ties with the movement and have come out as LGBTQ.

Some 700,000 LGBTQ-identifying adults have gone through some form of conversion therapy as of 2018, according to UCLA's Williams Institute, The Post and Courier notes.

Eighteen states and at least 50 cities and counties across the country have laws or regulations "protecting youth from this harmful practice," the Human Rights Campaign says.

In other words, thousands of bigot parents sent their boys off to have an intimate relationship with a gay man, and paid for it.

To date, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this harmful practice. Seven of these state laws were enacted under Republican governors. A growing number of municipalities have also enacted similar protections, including at least fifty cities and counties in Arizona, Florida, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin....

News coverage of the protest promoted anger from middle-aged straight Trump supporters, who flocked to Facebook to declare their intention to boycott!

Elderly heterosexual Trump supporter Pamela Ogletree was among those who declared:

Since it's been over five years past the national legalization of marriage between people of the same gender, I was shocked - shocked I say - to see a group that appeared to be a wedding party yesterday celebrating and taking pictures on the beach. I looked closely, and I'm sure there was a bride who was female, and a male groom. In fact, the bride had a really nice traditional-looking white dress and the groom, along with his entourage, were dressed in tuxes. I'm sure it was widely publicized that legalization of same-gender marriage would "destroy" traditional marriage, and that people would instead be marrying their dogs and lawn mowers. And yet, more than five years since traditional marriage was destroyed, there's a "traditional" marriage going on in California no less. Lady O asked one of the people in the party if the ceremony had actually been a legal marriage, or if the "bride and groom" were just doing some sort of parody. But strangely, apparently "traditional marriage" is indeed still legal, nobody has married their dog or lawn mower, and nobody's long-standing marriage has been declared null and void because of same-gender marriage. Who knew?
