They can be, this is supposed to be an especially bad year because of the mild winter. They're usually more prolific in high grass prairie areas which I have in abundance up here as opposed to deep woods.
That, on top our imminent cicada invasion is making for a wonderful start to "the fun season."

Yeah true, dry grassy areas around pines seem to be the absolute worst. I've gotten wrecked on multiple occasions by plagues of ticks and chiggers.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2024 8:00 pmThey can be, this is supposed to be an especially bad year because of the mild winter. Re: The Hiking Thread
Saturday's hike. Just off the Paola Indian reservation about 45 minutes from home.
The stream you see at the first of vid was significantly bigger after the rain we've had. We hopped across the rocks with no problem going out, but Lady O strained a quad on the steps (about two-thirds through the vid) and didn't want to risk taking a dip. Fortunately, the ranger wasn't around and we have a Jeep so I went to pick her up. Didn't notice that there wasn't enough room on the road/trail to turn around so we headed up the (authorized vehicles only) road to a turn around spot - where we found, ta daaaah - the ranger. We told him our story, Lady O told him she could barely walk (only a slight exaggeration) and he was decent about it. Just told us to go on back out. She's fine today.

A timber rattler!
I turned a corner and saw him, and he saw me. We were both as surprised as one another.
The one day I decided not to bring my nice camera with the zoom lense

Yeesh. Always was my worst fear when hiking with my dog. Got lucky with rattlesnakes but he did once get bit by a copperhead.
Where were you?

A different nature peril:
I have never gotten in a brawl while on a nature walk.Watch: Brawl between stick-wielding walkers erupts at Peak District beauty spot
Fight reportedly breaks out after man attempts to cross Dovedale stepping stones with pram
Police were called to a popular beauty spot in the Peak District after a fight broke out between several people wielding large sticks.
Video of the incident shows onlookers watching as several men attack each other at the stepping stones in Dovedale National Nature Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
The National Trust said the incident happened as two groups of walkers tried to cross in opposite directions, despite the fact the stepping stones are currently closed.
Onlookers told MailOnline that the fight broke out after a man attempted the crossing with a pram....

Neither have we, and as I think about it, we've seen very little altercation of any sort. We also don't usually walk where there's that many people. But that park isn't all that far from Liverpool and Manchester, so it was maybe a bunch of blokes wanting to get home for the match.

A man went missing in a Washington national park on July 31. He was just found alive.
Robert Schock went missing after he was last seen hiking in the North Cascades National Park. A trail crew found him on Aug. 30 in the park's Chilliwack Basin after they heard him yelling for help.
