I see these ads on TV for plans that cost "only" X-amount of dollars (usually in the hundreds). I have an LG Tracfone that I paid $9.95 for at Dollar General; I have two SIM-cards for it... AT&T and Verizon. When I reload minutes, I get 240 minutes of air-time for $39.95. I can go 3-4 months before needing to add minutes.
People are fools who have to have the latest thing out, and will spend untold amounts of $$ to get it, and not only that, will commit themselves to a plan for two years.
And another thing about my little 'ol flip phone....I can make telephone calls with it! No built-in home theatre, DVD player, unlocking my car doors........and NO SELFIES!

Well, all this is fine, but I personally have no need to have internet access when I'm not home, I have no interest in having a portable video camera at all times...I don't particularly even like to talk on a telephone and sure as hell won't pay extra to do so. And my phone at home, which I typically answer by yelling "WHAT IS IT?" if I don't recognize the number calling or when it's a toll free number, affords me an acceptable level of privacy. And if it gets broken, pissed on, or otherwise fouled, I can get another one for about twenty five dollars, plug it in, and am ready to accept calls again. It's great. I recommend it.

Sure, you can carry paper maps, you can ask strangers for directions, you can (eventually) find a yellow pages to find stores, parks, and restaurants, you can look up movie times in the newspaper (maybe) and you can drive along hoping to find a rest area or truck stop, you can write paper check and send them off at the post office, you can take your chances at what gas station might be the lowest price, you can hope the power doesn't go off in your house and that you remembered to set the alarm, you can take a paperback with you to the beach and get a paper plane ticket, you can carry a bunch of retail "loyalty" cards on your keychain, you can carry a paper address book and calendar around with you, along with a calculator and flashlight in your pocket. Sure, you can do anything you like, but I do all that and more with my mobile.

I didn't see that one. I did see one where some people performed less well on a test involving memory/recall if they had to give up their mobiles. If you've got a link or more detail about the blind panic, pass it along. It would be fun to read.
I suspect I use my mobile more than Mr.B, but I understand the sense of "not quite right" if I don't have it handy. I use it for everything from directions to "waiting" time reading to weather to definitions, finding numbers, and yada infinitim. So if I were out driving and wanted to know where the closest grocery is - and didn't have my mobile along - I'd have to change my usual habit. I'd have to ask a human, involving stopping and finding an English-speaking one, or I'd just have to drive around looking for it. Finding a phone booth with a directory is no longer an option. If I want to find what films are showing and where - and don't have my mobile handy - I'd have to find a newspaper or or something. Any time you find regular routines/habits disrupted, you're likely to feel some stress or distress even if you're generally able to adapt.
