Race, lets make this serious! It is nearly 2013.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I saw that story yesterday and had to cringe since I actually attended ETSU for a couple years in the early 80's. And the photo with the story is not on the campus of the university; don't know where they came up with it.

They're all over the web when one googles images for: 'It's Okay To Be White'.

That one is the first one that appears for me, and it comes from the It's OK to be white Wiki page. Still no statement of locale.

Stephen Miller’s Affinity for White Nationalism Revealed in Leaked Emails

In the run-up to the 2016 election, White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller promoted white nationalist literature, pushed racist immigration stories and obsessed over the loss of Confederate symbols after Dylann Roof’s murderous rampage, according to leaked emails reviewed by Hatewatch (SPLC)....
No one is surprised by Stephen Miller, Breitbart, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, bigoted and servile Trumpettes or racist 45SHOLE.

Ocasio-Cortez Calls On Stephen Miller To Resign Amid White Nationalist Email Leak

It's smart of AOC to be the first (I think) to call for ouster. She adds to her progressive cred and makes it LESS likely for him to leave. Thus, we get to point to the proven white supremacist in the WH for as long as he stays.

I like AOC, and agree with much of what she says. But it's not necessary for her to chime in on every leaf that falls.

Agreed, my post is specific to this one instance. I've wondered if she's overplaying it in general, but she's smart enough that maybe she knows what she's doing. There's got to be something to being one of the top 5 House names as a frosh, and true progressive (ie real Dem) standard bearers have been rare for awhile. We'll see if it goes well for her and the party or not.

Not to stereotype - well, that's exactly what I'm doing ;) - but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is pretty much what I would expect a smart, attractive, 30 year old, Bernie! volunteer, PR heritage, democratic socialist, former bartender, Latina Rep from the Bronx that beat an establishment Dem to be like. It would almost be disappointing otherwise.
Fight environmental racism. Demand climate justice now.

... Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Kamala Harris have a new bill – the Climate Equity Act – that would put fixing racial injustice at the heart of U.S. climate policy.4 The Climate Equity Act is one of the major planks of the Green New Deal, and we need to show massive support for it....

Petition to Congress:

"Pass the Climate Equity Act."

Well, yeah, but we've all had colleagues whose "real" person wasn't necessarily what showed up at the office or in court. I just wish she'd pick her fights with a little more thought and not feel like she has to comment on everything the press asks her about, as they try to get yet another AOC contrived controversy.

The hate for her from conservatives is really interesting. They hate her, yet they're a large part of the reason her name is so well known now. They endlessly share memes deriding her, casting her as an idiot and obsess over everything she says. It's probably like when kids have a crush on someone and don't know how to flirt or express interest properly, so they just make fun of them in the most awkward fashion possible.

Another Confederate monument comes down, this time in North Carolina

Image

A Confederate monument that had stood in front of a North Carolina courthouse for 112 years was taken down overnight after months of debate and protests.

Crews used cranes early Wednesday to remove the monument -- a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier atop a marble pedestal -- from its spot outside the Chatham County courthouse in Pittsboro, roughly a 35-mile drive west of Raleigh....

The county Board of Commissioners voted in August to remove the statue, CNN affiliate WRAL reported.
That sparked a court challenge by the group that donated the statue in 1907, the Winnie Davis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A judge ruled this month that the group did not give sufficient evidence supporting the monument's continued presence in front of the courthouse, CNN affiliate WTVD reported....
:---P

The article doesn't say how Chatham County got around Big Brother NC's ban on such removals.

And here's a quick example...

"Uber has an 'uncalled for' restroom situation, and Ocasio-Cortez doesn't like it"

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/compani ... &ocid=iehp

"Siri, show me what classism looks like.’ —
That’s Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s tweeted response to a story about how Uber’s Greenlight Hub office in Providence, R.I., offers up separate bathrooms for “partners” and “employees.”'

Not in her state, not a federal issue, apparently not unlawful, maybe not even inequitable, no real harm done, yet she focuses her Congressional self to tweet about a washroom for no particular reason except she doesn't like Uber. C'mon, AOC - pick your battles; make your time in Congress count.

The Ghosts of Elaine, Arkansas, 1919

In America’s bloody history of racial violence, the little-known Elaine Massacre in Phillips County, Arkansas, which took place in October 1919, a century ago this week, may rank as the deadliest. The reasons why the event has remained shrouded and obscure, despite a shocking toll of bloodshed inflicted on the African-American inhabitants of Phillips County, speak to a legacy of white supremacy in the US and ruthless suppression of labor activism that disfigures American society to this day....

A respected Arkansas journalist, himself a conventional Southern racist who firmly believed that “The negro… cannot under any circumstances become the social or political equal of the white man,” reported with sadness in 1925 that more than 800 blacks had been murdered. Recently, the Equal Justice Initiative, in its 2017 report “Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror,” estimated that over two hundred African Americans died. If this is correct, it would make the Elaine Massacre the most lethal episode of racial violence in American history, with the possible exception of the much better-known Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, a murderous rampage that burned thirty-six city blocks to the ground, left thousands of black Tulsans homeless, and took the lives of between 100 and 300 people....

History does not repeat itself, Mark Twain supposedly said, but sometimes it rhymes. Now, as then, the ideology of white supremacy provides trigger-happy men with mythical threats. Tragedies like the shootings at the Walmart in El Paso, at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, and at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston have brought back from what seemed a bygone era the jarring sounds of white supremacist violence. According to a recent study by the Anti-Defamation League, in 2018 alone, there were fifty extremist-related killings, almost all of them by right-wing extremists, with 78 percent by white supremacists.

Far from being relics of a distant past, the two forces at the heart of the Elaine Massacre—white supremacy and a huge asymmetry in power between employers and workers—are very much alive. The ghosts of Elaine haunt us still.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could soon be out of her government job. Due to the high number of non-citizens in her district, it might be eliminated after the census.

Wouldn’t that be ironic?

AOC MAKES A BRONX CENSUS PUSH AMID FEARS OF LOST HOUSE SEATS

For Ocasio-Cortez, a full Census count is more than a matter of making sure her district gets all the funds and services it’s due. In a sense, her own political fortunes could hang in the balance.

A review by THE CITY, building on data and analysis by The Texas Tribune, suggests Ocasio-Cortez’ district could be particularly vulnerable to undercount because a little over a quarter of those living there are non-citizens.

New York is expected to lose a House seat after the 2020 Census, and state Democrats are looking to draw out @AOC’s district.

AOC might be be forced out of Congress from redistricting by her own party!

Interestingly enough, I can personally relate to why that would create a problem. Lady O and I have a running bit of not-entirely-humour about "not being in their demographic" for one thing or another. Some of the time it might be age, health, economic level and sometimes it can be race. If we saw and advert for some place and the only people portrayed were Black people under 30, we'd probably think it's not for us. Not necessarily that they wouldn't let us in, but somewhere we wouldn't be a good fit. So suppose that advert were for a town, it certainly could create the wrong (and probably unintended) impression.

DeAndre Arnold Gets Invite To Oscars From Team Behind ‘Hair Love’
Matthew A. Cherry, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade surprised the Black teen who refused to cut his locs to walk at graduation.

His Texas school district didn’t listen when high school senior DeAndre Arnold spoke up about the importance of growing his locs. But celebrities like Matthew A. Cherry, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have assured Arnold that he’s not alone.

Cherry, Union and Wade surprised Arnold with an invitation to attend the upcoming Academy Awards as their guest. They’re all part of the team behind “Hair Love,” an Oscar-nominated animated short film that tells the story of a Black father who wears his own hair in locs and learns to do his daughter’s hair.

Arnold made headlines last week when his family revealed that he would be barred from walking at his upcoming graduation unless he cut his locs. Under his school’s guidelines on hair length, the teen’s locs ― a hairstyle rooted in Black pride, culture and sometimes religion ― are considered too long.

“Since Deandre Arnold’s school didnt want to let him walk at his graduation because of his hair we figured that he should walk with us on the red carpet at the #Oscars as our special guest,” Cherry, the writer and director of “Hair Love,” tweeted on Friday.

Cherry noted in a later tweet that Union and Wade, producers of “Hair Love,” are flying the teen and his mother, Sandy Arnold, out to Los Angeles for the Oscars on Feb. 9. The celebrity couple will also cover the family’s lodging and car service costs.

Personal care brand Dove, a sponsor of “Hair Love,” will give Arnold and his mother the “red carpet treatment” by covering their ticket costs and wardrobe for the ceremony, Cherry said.

Arnold, who has been growing his locs since seventh grade, was recently told that his hair is not in compliance with the “Dress and Grooming” policy at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas.
Now that is an ironic school name.
The policy, as it appears on the school district’s website, prohibits male students from having hair that extends below the earlobes.

Arnold had previously worn his hair pinned up at school to remain in compliance, but his family said the school district has revised its policy to include more restrictions on hair length.

During his appearance Wednesday on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Arnold noted that he has been placed on in-school suspension due to his locs. Since cutting his hair is not a real option for him, the teen said his choices moving forward would be either to remain on in-school suspension or to shift to an alternative school.

DeGeneres teamed up with Alicia Keys to present Arnold with a $20,000 gift during her show....
