Well, as one whose entire lifestyle depends on connectivity, I'm not the least biased in the world, but I think you're blaming bad behaviour of the user on the tech. When we go somewhere we'll have to wait for something, "Mrs. O Really" takes a book. I read Flipboard on my mobile. What's the difference? We used to carry cameras. Now we use our mobiles. But I don't walk into poles (or Italians) and don't ignore the people I'm with to use my mobile. Some do. They're rude. It's not the mobile's fault.

We've seen the videos of people walking into traffic, falling into mall fountains, etc...
Here's an example, posted here as well as in the "Just For Fun" thread:
An example of technology turning people into mindless zombies......

Like it or not, collectively we are being altered by our personal tech, just as America is altered by the availability of guns and the culture surrounding them. One can't reasonably dismiss all negative results by "blaming bad behaviour of the user on the tech (or guns)."

Yeah I agree. I work in "technology" but I absolutely detest it. I loathe being connected 24/7. Well, the gun, ummm, "enthusiasts" do have a valid point, in context. A gun, by itself and untouched, doesn't kill. It's a tool used to kill - still a matter of behaviour of the human, not the tool. But yeah, a gun does make it easier to kill, and a person with one is more likely to kill, and a mobile does make it easy and attractive to use and be entertained by it, and if a person has a mobile they're more likely to use it. Probably not many instances of anybody using a mobile to kill somebody with, though. Or for that matter dying from the "worst disease in the world."Vrede too wrote:Like it or not, collectively we are being altered by our personal tech, just as America is altered by the availability of guns and the culture surrounding them. I'm not sure who is being quoted with, "worst disease in the world," or what it means.O Really wrote:... Probably not many instances of anybody using a mobile to kill somebody with, though. Or for that matter dying from the "worst disease in the world."
Cell phones are addictive and thus some use them while driving despite knowing they're 4 times more likely to wreck. Then, texting is even more dangerous. Plus, there are the inattentive pedestrians that injure themselves or get run over. Of course they're used to kill and/or die, thousands of times every year.

C'mon folks! Lighten up! The pics were a parody! Did you not see the cat and the little kids? It was not my intent to run down any of your life choices. Once again, it was pointing out how addictive today's technology has gotten.O Really wrote:Seth's original post with the pics.Vrede too wrote:I'm not sure who is being quoted with, "worst disease in the world," or what it means.
Don't you worry your poor little head none, "Lefty". There's plenty of bandwidth left for you fuss over. I happen to like the PBS (people being stupid) that's found in many of the videos in ebaums and Break!. I'm waiting to see you there.Sometime Lefty wrote:The one wasting all the bandwidth? Re: Just for Fun
I dunno, Seth - sure the pics might be entertaining, but labeling them as "worst disease in the world" does seem to be a bit judgmental. Maybe not you personally, but there are a lot of people running around saying, with some degree of seriousness, that mobiles are the devil's tool and are ruining everybody's minds and will turn people into zombies. So yeah, I look at a vid of the woman falling into the fountain because she's reading her mobile and I laugh my ass off. But a series of pics of people on their mobiles labeled "worst disease" strikes me as a commentary I might like to respond to.

Re: Just for Fun
Fair enough. I didn't create the photos or the title; I copied and pasted them. I'm certain the one who posted them did so as a tongue-in-cheek light-hearted look; which was my intention. As the thread title indicates: "Just For Fun". Sure, and Luddites deny being Luddites. That doesn't mean either is correct about the other.Vrede too wrote:Ruined demonic zombies usually deny being ruined demonic zombies.O Really wrote:... but there are a lot of people running around saying, with some degree of seriousness, that mobiles are the devil's tool and are ruining everybody's minds and will turn people into zombies....
