The Cinema Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Eternally thin-skinned and whiny MAGA has found something new to throw a foot-stomping tantrum over:
'Superman' Director Responds To Right-Wing Meltdown Over 1 Simple Word
James Gunn's comments about the Man of Steel sparked a "SUPERWOKE" debate on Fox News.

Director James Gunn’s take on his new “Superman” movie appears to be kryptonite to conservatives after he described the iconic comic book character as an “immigrant,” an analysis that Clark Kent fans are all too familiar with.

Gunn — in a Sunday feature for The Times of London — described “Superman” as the “story of America,” adding that it highlights an immigrant who “came from other places and populated the country.”

He continued, “But for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

Gunn, who noted that the movie is about “politics” as well as “morality,” said he expects “jerks out there who are just not kind” and will be offended “just because it is about kindness.”

“But screw them,” he said.
The story of “Superman” has been viewed as an allegory for immigrants. The character’s creators — Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — were the children of Jewish immigrants and its publisher DC Comics once shared that the Man of Steel was himself a “refugee.”
I didn't know that.
Gunn’s description was met with right-wing criticism on social media and was the focus of debate on Fox News’ “The Five” on Monday in a segment that featured the chyron “SUPERWOKE.” ...

... Sean Gunn, the director’s brother who plays supervillain Maxwell Lord in the film, swiftly defended his sibling.

“We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don’t like that, you’re not American,” he told Variety.

“People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.”

Kellyanne Conway Slams Promotion Of The New 'Superman' Movie With 1 Truly Baffling Criticism

Always the public clarion, Kellyanne has made it our patriotic duty to see the film in theaters. I wasn't really planning on it, but . . .

Violent Night
R, Released Dec 2, 2022, 1h 52m,
Holiday/ Action/ Comedy

Tomatometer 74%, Popcornmeter 88%

When a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage, the team isn't prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (David Harbour, Black Widow, Stranger Things series) is on the grounds, and he's about to show why this Nick is no saint.

Critics Consensus
Violent Night isn't as wildly entertaining as its concept might suggest, but for those seeking harder-edged holiday fare, it may be a ho-ho-whole lot of fun.

Audience Says
It could have taken its cool concept even further, but Violent Night is still a funny, gory good time -- and David Harbour is terrific as a Santa you won't want to mess with.
It's profane, uber-graphic, irreverent (mostly) and :laughing-rolling: .

Lemonade Mouth is a 2011 American teen musical comedy-drama television film, based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Mark Peter Hughes. The film was directed by Patricia Riggen and written by April Blair, and stars Bridgit Mendler, Adam Hicks, Naomi Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Blake Michael. The film tells the story of five high school students who meet in detention and form a band to stand up for their beliefs and to overcome their individual and collective struggles.

Lemonade Mouth was released on Disney Channel on April 15, 2011, and received 5.7 million views on its premiere night, making it the third most-watched Disney Channel Original Film (DCOM) premiere of its year. DVR viewing raised the number to 7.1 million. The film's soundtrack of the same name enjoyed commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard 200. The tracks "Breakthrough", "Determinate" and "Somebody" were released as singles and charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The film and soundtrack received positive reviews from critics and audiences, with many praising the direction, performances, and themes. It is often considered one of the best DCOM films.
It had several B-list nominations and award wins. I liked it, nowhere near as dopey as Disney and teen movies often are.

Strong adult cast pretending to be high school kids. They do their own performing, producing an excellent soundtrack.
... With 11 original songs that span teen pop, pop punk, hip hop, and rock, Lemonade Mouth (the band) tackle the usual teen subjects (self-esteem, standing by your friends in the face of adversity, following your dreams, being silly) and successfully blend the dewy-eyed romanticism of the Jonas Brothers and the quasi-rebellious angst of early Avril Lavigne, resulting in a winning, if not entirely original, collection of new High School Musical-inspired homeroom anthems.
I liked early Avril Lavigne. The girls, who all sang lead on different songs, continued with successful acting and music careers.

Prey (2022 film)

Tomatometer 94% !!! Popcornmeter 74%

Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, "Prey" is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

Critics Consensus
The rare action thriller that spikes adrenaline without skimping on character development, Prey is a Predator prequel done right.

Audience Says
If you can look past some dodgy effects, Prey is pretty much the back-to-basics Predator installment fans have been waiting years to see.
Morphing the Governator into a young Comanche woman is a brilliant idea. Well done movie. I have not watched most of the sequels because of the lousy reviews.

I like that the Indians are all played by Indians.

Lots of nominations and a few wins:

Was on FX 8pm & 10pm EDT here.
Will be on Mon 8/11 8pm & 10pm.
Wiki
... Prey premiered at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2022, and was released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film in the United States and on Disney+ and Star internationally on August 5.
Idk if it's still streaming on these services.
The film received positive reviews from critics and high viewership, leading Trachtenberg to direct two additional Predator films, Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands, both set for release in 2025.
Predator: Killer of Killers is a 2025 American adult animated science fiction action horror film directed by Dan Trachtenberg, co-directed by Joshua Wassung, and written by Micho Robert Rutare....

Predator: Killer of Killers was released on June 6, 2025, in the United States on Hulu and internationally on Disney+. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, Trachtenberg’s direction, writing, action sequences, musical score, and voice cast.
I have not seen it.

While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Critics Consensus
Honoring its nightmarish predecessors while chestbursting at the seams with new frights of its own, Romulus injects some fresh acid blood into one of cinema's great horror franchises.

Audience Says
Resurrecting a franchise with equal servings of fan service and originality, Alien: Romulus keenly delivers Xenomorph blood and thrills.
I agree.
