Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Child abuse prevention charity The Children's Society published a guide to assess the online risk posed to children identifying as transgender or non-binary, as well as those who fit into 'furry' and 'therian' subcultures.

The charity found that almost one in eight furries self-identify as transgender or non-binary - a rate 20 times higher than those who do not identify as furries, The Times reported.

And those who fit into the 'therian' subculture - a word which takes its root from the Greek for 'wild beast' - have reported having experienced being an animal.

The guidance's description of a 'therian' was: 'A person who experiences being and identifies as a non-human animal on an integral, personal level.'

Online, thousands of young people 'therians' or 'furries', gather to share tips on 'trotting', feeding and suggestions on how to persuade their school or workplace to let them use a litter tray rather than a human toilet.

If only sick leftists that can not identify what gender they are had been addressed. Democrats in office didn't give a shit. Hell, they influenced it. Neo, did the gay band Village People influence you to join the Navy?

Meanwhile, I just read a story on yahoo news about a GQP TX state legislator who just introduced a bill banning "furries" in public schools. Looks like the nutjobs have flopped back into this particular disproven nonsense. Hilarious.
Stupidly sexualizing children, it's what MAGA does. Ewww.
Consider how ignorant and gullible one must be to interpret stupid made up videos from the internet created by someone scrambling for "clicks" and believing such things are prevalent, common, or some urgent problem that must be addressed. Hilarious.
It's worse than clickbait. It's part of the organized con campaign to smear public trust in our public schools.
GOP lawmaker admits he has no proof of student “furries” using litterbox
He filed a bill to stop students from acting like animals in schools. His entire bill is based on a lie.

Texas state Rep. Stan Gerdes (R), who introduced a bill last month to ban students dressing up as animal “furries” and using litterboxes at schools, has admitted that he has no proof of those things ever happening in a school in the state, despite claiming otherwise when he first unveiled his bill. In fact, Democrats have accused him of introducing the bill to turn Texans against public schools in favor of Republicans’ long-sought-after school voucher program that would redirect taxpayer funds to private charter schools....

“I’m not comfortable with any bill that’s going after a non-existent issue,” (Democratic Texas state Rep. James) Talarico said. “Governor Abbott has used this litter box rumor to paint our schools in the worst possible light. That’s because if you want to defund neighborhood schools across the state, you have to get Texans to turn against their public schools. So you call librarians groomers, you accuse teachers of indoctrination, and now you say that schools are providing litter boxes to students. That’s how all of this is tied together.”

   :-|| :-|| :-|| No way could I ever be that calm and professional in tearing the child-exploiting GQP apart. I would probably be even harsher and more mocking than we are here.
"ignorant and gullible ... stupid"
Indeed, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) cited Gerdes’ bill at a rally where he pushed school vouchers as a way to let parents send their kids to schools where furries aren’t running amok.

“In some small rural sections of school districts in the state of Texas, they have in their schools, what are called furries. Y’all know what this is?” he told the crowd.

“Kids go to school dressed up as cats with litter boxes in their classrooms,” he falsely stated, not naming the rural school districts he was referring to. When asked for further comment, his office said that “countless parents” are “growing frustrated at the quality of schools.”

Abbott then pushed school vouchers at the rally, saying that they would allow parents to send their kids to private schools and avoid “the pervasive woke leftist agenda that’s being forced on our kids in our public schools.”
Tied for worst Gov with Fascist DerSantis.
... There is no proof of any student furries ever actually using a litter box or demanding to be recognized as an animal in any school anywhere in America.

It used to be that the best/easiest way to spread fear was to start with a real (although probably obscure) incident and act like it could happen to anybody. Some drunk guy staggers into a manure pit in Nebraska and drowns and the news chick says "details at 11 - stay tuned and we'll tell you how to protect your family." Now they don't even bother to start with anything remotely real, just make shit up and don't even bother to make up any "evidence."

Hilton Head teacher arrested for alleged sexual relationship with student

A dance teacher from Hilton Head Island High School was arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student.

Victoria Katherine Montgomery, 32, of Bluffton, was charged Friday with a felony count of sexual battery with a student who is 18 or older, according to Beaufort County jail records. She was released from jail Saturday morning on a personal recognizance bond.
"felony ... 18 or older" :wtf:
Montgomery was placed on paid administrative leave after the alleged sexual relationship was reported to Principal Steve Schidrich on Wednesday. School officials then notified the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
I can see employment consequences up to and including termination.

Bluffton resident Victoria Katherine Montgomery, 32, was arrested May 2, 2025, on the charge of sexual battery with a student. She served as the dance teacher and head of the arts department at Hilton Head Island High School.

Montgomery was charged with a felony because she had “direct supervisory authority” over the student in question. The criminal statute under which she was charged indicates that no “aggravated force” was used....
In a non-school setting or even in college there has to be some evidence of coercion or reward between adults for it to be illegal sexual harassment. Just being a supervisor, while against workplace rules and possibly unsavory, is not a crime if the sex is consensual. At most this age gap was 14 years. We tolerate or even celebrate the 49 year age gap between Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson.

‘They’re not going to be academically successful’: Trump Administration cancels $1 billion mental health funding for schools

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Trump Administration announced that $1 billion in funding has been cut towards mental health services for children.

Following this announcement, State Attorney General Letitia James announced a lawsuit against the administration, calling recent actions dangerous, cruel and illegal.

“We are asking the court to halt the unlawful dismantling of HHS, mass firings, and to restore the lifesaving programs that millions of Americans depend on,” James said.

“Those cuts are going to compromise a health and human service care system that is already struggling to provide adequate resources for those in individuals in need,” said Dave Roberts, an Adjunct Professor of Psychology Child-Life at Utica University.

Roberts says the cuts will play a role in a child’s development.

“I think the services we provide not only from a mental health standpoint, but support standpoint, can help individuals develop the coping skills to navigate challenging times, but also develop essential critical thinking skills,” Roberts said.

... “Students who are identified early and get treatment early are much more successful moving through their academic years,” said Maria Randazzo, the center’s director.

And if students aren’t treated.

“They’re not going to be academically successful, they will tend to isolate, they will not engage socially. We find they don’t connect to the campus as well,” Randazzo said....

The babbling moron cult leader told his nephew that "your son doesn't even recognize you" as a reason to deny additional medical expense. I've never had a large age gap, less than 5 years either way.

School Vouchers Are a Big, Fat Tax Break for the Wealthy | Opinion

They're also racist, ableist, sectarian and anti-LGBTQ+.
Tucked within House Republicans' 389-page budget reconciliation package, which President Donald Trump has dubbed his "big, beautiful bill," is a nationwide private school voucher proposal called the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA, H.R. 833, S. 292). If passed, ECCA would trigger a massive and unprecedented transfer of public dollars to private, mostly religious schools—$136 billion over the next 10 years.

For all their talk of "parental rights" and "returning education to the states," the bill's supporters evidently see no irony or issue with a plan that would have the federal government impose school vouchers on all 50 states and Washington, D.C., overriding the authority of legislatures and overruling the will of voters.

In a recent Newsweek piece, Rep. Elise Stefanik claimed "entrenched special interests" are blocking the advancement of school privatization policies. But the reality is the American people have rejected vouchers every time and in every state they've been on the ballot. Just last November, voters in Kentucky, Nebraska, and Colorado all rejected voucher schemes.

Given vouchers' abysmal track record with the public, it's understandable their proponents would like to avoid having a full and fair hearing on ECCA. By stuffing it deep inside a giant budget package, politicians are counting on us not noticing that just beneath their winsome title and talking points is yet another giveaway to the wealthy and another gutting of our public institutions.

They hope we'll be fooled by tired tropes and long-busted myths. Distasteful as it is, this tactic, too, is understandable: When decades of peer-reviewed, independent research have shown vouchers don't work, what's a school privatizer to do but spread propaganda and empty exhortations like, "We know educational choice works," and, "Let's seize this opportunity to give every child—not just the lucky few—a real shot at success."

Voucher proponents' talking points are specious at best. At worst, they're downright defrauding....
:puke-left: :obscene-birdiered: Let's hope that in a year and a half Stefanik is relegated to the irrelevant fringe of a minority party.
