Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

... Random thought: I'm not so sure it's really progress that it's no longer acceptable in a lyrics reprint to spell out a word that was used in a song in 1974. I'm kinda surprised the video renditions of the song aren't blipped. Nobody seems to realize it's not the word that's the problem.
It's not all of them, first lyrics I clicked on:
https://genius.com/Randy-newman-rednecks-lyrics
I think Newman was enough on the fringe that his audience understood him. It was Short People that made it into mainstream radio and people took it as an attack on short people.

Here's another on slavery

Sail Away
Song by Randy Newman

In America you get food to eat
Won't have to run through the jungle
And scuff up your feet
You just sing about Jesus and drink wine all day
It's great to be an American
Ain't no lion or tiger, ain't no mamba snake
Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake
Ev'rybody is as happy as a man can be
Climb aboard, little wog, sail away with me
Sail away, sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away, sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
In America every man is free
To take care of his home and his family
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
You're all gonna be an American
Sail away, sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away, sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

It would be easy for some to attack this song for these 2 lines, but only if you hadn't listened to him sing the whole song, or didn't want to try to understand
Climb aboard, little wog
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree

Most people don't realize that he’s not from the south.

Wikipedia
Born in Los Angeles to an extended family of Hollywood film composers, Newman began his songwriting career at the age of 17, penning hits for acts such as the Fleetwoods, Cilla Black, Gene Pitney, and the Alan Price Set. In 1968, he made his formal debut as a solo artist with the album Randy Newman, produced by Lenny Waronker and Van Dyke Parks. Four of Newman's non-soundtrack albums have charted in the US top 40: Sail Away (1972), Good Old Boys (1974), Little Criminals (1977), and Harps and Angels (2008).

Since the 1980s, Newman has worked mostly as a film composer. He has scored nine Disney-Pixar animated films, including all four Toy Story films (1995–2019), A Bug's Life (1998), both Monsters, Inc. films (2001, 2013), and the first and third Cars films (2006, 2017), as well as Disney's James and the Giant Peach (1996) and The Princess and the Frog (2009). His other film scores include Cold Turkey (1971), Ragtime (1981), The Natural (1984), Awakenings (1990), Pleasantville (1998), Meet the Parents (2000), Seabiscuit (2003), and Marriage Story (2019).

Newman has received twenty-two Academy Award nominations in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories and has won twice in the latter category, contributing to the Newmans being the most nominated Academy Award extended family, with a collective 92 nominations in various music categories. He has also won three Emmys, seven Grammy Awards and the Governor's Award from the Recording Academy.[7] In 2007, he was recognized by the Walt Disney Company as a Disney Legend.[8] He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.[9]

South LA, maybe.

But according to the article, he spent a good bit of childhood time in New Orleans. Maybe that's where he got it.

True. Still it's a way over the top threat for children in school. In a better world the scumbag would be hounded out of office by enraged disruptive parents.

https://california100.org/ethnic-studie ... rspectives.

In October 2021, the Legislature passed and Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 101 – a historic bill which makes California the first state to require Ethnic Studies as a high school graduation requirement. The law requires that students in the class of 2030 take one semester of ethnic studies, and schools must offer these courses starting in the 2025-2026 school year. Ethnic studies is the interdisciplinary study of race, ethnicity, and other identities, focusing on people’s lived experiences and perspectives. According to the model curriculum overview, the focus of this law is to provide students the opportunity to learn about the histories, cultures, struggles, and contributions to American society of historically marginalized peoples, which have often been untold in US history courses.

Indiana lawmaker targets furries in schools. Schools say there's no problem

 Ever notice how obsessed modern Repuqs are with kids and kink? Hmmm.
John Oliver said it best, every kid these days has a phone if there were kids using litter boxes and furries running around the school these politicians wouldn't be the ones breaking it to people, it'd be all over social media.
Do you realize the kids in our schools are laughing at the adults here in Indiana? The kids talk about it. My daughter came home and said yes there is kitty litter in the bathroom, it's what janitors use when someone throws up to help clean it up. The kids get it not sure why the adults can't.
Target the uneducated and just simply tell them what they wish to hear, no evidence required. Anyone else notice it’s always the same few falling for these conspiracy theories.
Create a problem, then fix it. It happens when they have zero policies or ways to solve REAL problems.
I've got it on good authority that this is a "real" thing. My next door neighbor's second cousin's, sister in law, who served for three days as a substitute teacher in 2002 told me all about it.

Why history is never right:
Slide show here (same page, horizontal, not new pages) about "What Normal Life Was Like in the 60's"
Most of the items are somewhat founded in something close to fact, but infused with a lot of fuzzy interpretation, undoubtedly written by somebody born in 90-something.

For example:
Drinking and driving
In fact, in most countries around the world, drinking and driving at the time was generally acceptable. People would have to be pretty unlucky (or extremely hammered) to get in trouble with the law for drinking and driving.

Cycling safety
People rode bicycles without helmets recreationally and in many cycling competitions. (horrors!)

The dangers of sun exposure were unknown
In general, sunscreen was not used. People didn’t know about the dangers of exposing their skin to UV rays for extended periods.

Unless my memory is fuzzy I'm not sure what your complaints are.

For example:
Drinking and driving
In fact, in most countries around the world, drinking and driving at the time was generally acceptable. People would have to be pretty unlucky (or extremely hammered) to get in trouble with the law for drinking and driving.

Open container was not illegal in MT in the 1970s and I was allowed to skate on drunk driving once as long as a sober passenger took over.

Cycling safety
People rode bicycles without helmets recreationally and in many cycling competitions. (horrors!)

I never had a helmet as a child and didn't get one on my own until the 1980s.

The dangers of sun exposure were unknown
In general, sunscreen was not used. People didn’t know about the dangers of exposing their skin to UV rays for extended periods.

People, not me, used tanning lotion, and without any parental objection I got as brown as I could in the summers. Ozone depletion wasn't observed until the late 1970s.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/health/wellne ... ss-AAZwKWB
Though not a complete view of the 1960s, not that it claims to be, none of the slides strike me as glaringly wrong.

You're right, nothing was glaringly wrong in the statements. I certainly once considered baby oil to be a sunny beach day necessity and I own, but rarely use bike helmets even today. I've also patronized drive-through beer and daiquiri stands. But something about the listicle struck me as maybe lacking context. Or maybe my perception of the author's air of superiority might have been faulty. Anyway...

For example, "Men wore long hair throughout the 60s.

But then, haven't we always had shit for history? Columbus was a real hero. The Indians were savages who wouldn't conform, we were forced to kill them in order to defend ourselves. Slavery was (your choice) necessary to build northeastern cities including Washington DC, or Slavery wasn’t used in northeastern cities and especially not to build our government buildings. The South was evil, the North was righteous. We could have won in Vietnam but for ... (the politicians, the hippies, the Generals, all the drugs and negros, and more). We won the World Wars and saved Europe, they owe us their freedoms. All hippies were draft dodgers and promoted free sex. It's okay to teach your kid that giant bunnies, jolly fat men who like to touch kids, creatures who can slip into your house at night to exchange money for your teeth, are all true.

It's no wonder that so many believe conspiracy theories.

The part that they don’t get, is all the oh my god how could they have used lead in plumbing, or not used sunscreen is the foundation for what we know today. We are not superior to the 14th century Europeans who didn't know the fleas on rats spread the Plague, as those 500 years from now should not consider themselves better. They will be the same, but with more history to learn from.

My favorite of the click through bs articles, is Ericka explaining how one really eats boomer food. She actually says that boiled peanuts are so gross that she will not try one.

That one stood out to me more than the others:
Men had long hair

Long hair was trendy for men throughout the 1960s.
. . . and it was viciously criticized.

Recent research suggests rats may not have played the critical role in keeping plague going in Europe.

Yeah, that was my point - that history is crap because of some combination of distortion, lack of context, unintentional errors, poor research, or intentional lies.
